If the Eagles want to draft a QB this offseason, they'll have plenty of competition - JimmyK, Philly.com
After Nick Foles' disappointing performance last week against Dallas, coupled with the reality that Michael Vick likely isn't the long term answer at QB for the Eagles, there's a growing sentiment that the Eagles' 'franchise QB' will be drafted this offseason.
All-22: The Struggles Of Nick Foles - Sheil Kapadia, Birds 24/7
He overthrew receivers and underthrew receivers. Threw behind them in some instances and was too far out in front in others. Foles’ accuracy was quite possibly as bad as you’ll see from an NFL quarterback this year (11-for-29 for 80 yards overall). But beyond the misses were the plays where Foles failed to see the entire field or simply hesitated to pull the trigger. Coming off a strong performance the week before against the Bucs, it’s difficult to come up with an explanation for why the second-year QB was so bad. And clearly, the head coach didn’t have an answer. The truth is, Kelly called a good game. Pass protection held up well for the most part. Receivers got open. An average QB performance likely would have yielded 300+ yards and a score in the 20s. Foles showed his A-game in Tampa and his F-game against the Cowboys. Had he gotten up to just a C, the Eagles would have had a great chance to win the game.
The Evolution of the QB Position - Tommy Lawlor, Iggles Blitz
As we’ve discussed the 2013 season, more than a few of you have talked about wanting the Eagles to lose so that the team can get a high pick and then use it on a QB. I get the mentality. That’s where many star QBs come from. The point of my post was that you didn’t have to spend a Top 10 pick on a QB in order to get a good player. That hasn’t always been the case. There was a period when a lot of QBs taken from 11-32 felt like reaches. There was a decade or so when all but one QB taken in the 2nd round turned into a bust. The good one was Drew Brees. You had to go early 1st round or late round and hope. Things are changing. The position of QB is evolving.
No rule of thumb for Chip Kelly’s decision to kick 60-yard FG at end of first half - Matt Hammond, The700Level
Turns out, there’s not much of a rule of thumb here. Only four times in the last five years (2,560 games) had a coach faced what Kelly did on Sunday: fourth-and-1 between an opponent’s 40 and 45 yard line with under one minute to go in the first half. (And those parameters are a bit generous. For Kelly, only 14 seconds remained. If we didn’t expand our conditions beyond 15 seconds, our sample size would be only two.)
#HotSportsTakes: Chip Kelly Owes the National Football League an Apology - Andrew Sharp, Grantland
A few more months, or a few more years. Isn't that the biggest question left with the Chip Kelly era? The spread offense is a dead offense. The fireworks have come and gone, and all we have left is a guy who's afraid to take responsibility. The Chump goes out and gets embarrassed on national TV last weekend, and afterward, it's everybody's fault. "I don't think we blocked very well," he said. "I don't think we caught the ball very well. I don't think we got off routes very well. It was 11 guys on offense. It was all of us on offense, me calling plays, everybody. It's not just one guy."
Did the pressure get to Foles? - Jeff McLane, Inquirer
Foles struggled from start to concussion. He completed 11 of 29 passes for 80 yards. He often threw behind, over, and under receivers. He didn't turn the ball over, but was gun-shy even though he often had time in the pocket and receivers open, sometimes even waving their hands to get his attention.
Shurmur 'not discouraged' by Foles, offense - John Gonzalez, CSN Philly
The Eagles had a terrible game. Nick Foles might have been the worst of the lot. While Pat Shurmur wasn’t pleased with the overarching offensive performance -- and how could he be after the Eagles scored just three points -- he said he’s "not discouraged."
G.J. Kinne Will Be Ready If Needed - Alex Smith, PE.com
"I watched the game (against the Cowboys) and I saw Foles go down, so I thought that there might be a chance that they bring me in," said Kinne. "Foles is like my best friend so it was one of those things where I didn’t like that he went down, but at the same time, it gave me the opportunity to come back. I’m just very thankful to everyone in the front office for bringing me back."
