I'm seeing a lot of doom and gloom posts right now. Most are on other Eagles sites but some are here too.
Let's take some perspective here. Chip Kelly inherited a very untalented roster with a handful of very good pieces. By a handful, I mean Shady McCoy and a previously injured Jason Peters. Yet, this team has tons of upside for a rebuilding team. The offense is clicking and Vick is actually playing much better than I would have guessed 5 weeks ago. The defense is trying to figure itself out but we have seen upside there too. Boykin could be a franchise player. Curry, Thorton, and Cox all look to be up-and-coming defensive players. Simply put, that is more than a reasonable person would have expected from this team.
Football fans one quarter into an NFl season are not reasonable though. I'd like to remind my fellow fans that this team has had some very bad NFL drafts inr ecent years. If you want to start a witchhunt, look at who is to blame for that. If any Eagle is on a short leash (other than the constantly underperforming players who will surely be gone by 2015), then look at Howie Roseman. I'm not saying he primarily is to blame for the current struggles but I know he is the most culpable of every person who is currently associated with the franchise.
This..team..lacks..talent. Take off the rabid-fan-colored glasses and relax. Chip Kelly has made some great changes to the team and also a few rookie mistakes but we need to chill with any coach-related panic. Even our redzone struggles can be explained by a lack of talent. Celek, Casey, and Lane Johnson have all directly and exclusively been responsible for taking touchdowns off the board (drops and penalties). If Damaris effing Johnson doesn't muff that punt against the Chiefs, that game would have a completely different tone and flow to it. In other words, a few single player failures have done more to put this team behind than any other singular factor.
But hey, mind farts can be cured. We are a few mind farts away from being a 3-1 team and we have reason to be optimistic. And by optimistic, I mean a reasonable 8-8 season that is better than we would have had with Andy hanging around dialing it in on autopilot for a another year and another draft. The offense is still a top offense and that goes very far in racking up wins in the NFL. The team is better than its record- some wins will follow soon.
Being competitive will take time. I'd hate to see Chip given too little time just because the fanbase can't be reasonable. Think long haul. Please.
End of soapbox.
