Next Year is a No Win

The Eagles finally have a top draft pick and a huge need at QB and of course, there is no QB. The Eagles can stick with Foles, go after guys like Geno Smith, Matt Barclay, or Tyler Wilson. Finally they could trade for guys like Alex Smith, Colt McCoy, or Kirk Cousins.

Under any scenario it appears the Eagles are not where they want to be at QB. Assuming the Eagles stick with Foles the natural course is to play old school football: Run the ball, don't turn the ball over, and play tough defense. The Eagles first and foremost will have to protect Foles. Drafting or signing a top OT would allow Herremans to move back to guard, allowing for a fine front five of Peters, Herremans, Kelce, Mathis, and the new OT.

The real question mark comes in terms of what to do with the draft? It is stacked on the lines, but there does not appear to be a obvious drop off in talent at a point like in a lot of drafts. Clearly the eagles will need help at CB and S and the talent will be too good to pass up on the lines. Likewise, the eagles have a depth problem at LB and DE. One would imagine that the Eagles will attempt to trade down but will anyone bite? Trading the #4 pick for a teams middle first and second round picks is attractive, especially if they throw in a high pick in the following year, but it remains to be seen how many teams will find "their guy" high.

It has been said 1,000 time but if you are bad enough to be drafting early, unless you are taking the franchise QB, you have enough holes that you should probably be trading down. That said, lets not forget that with the rookie cap, taking a top pick no longer has a huge financial burden. Here is the upside though, I don't think anyone has delusions of a Superbowl run next year, but it is the perfect year to develop a young QB and a lot of young talent (especially on the lines, a position where it is classically hard to achieve greatness in your first year). So, while next year is a no win, it is a great year to be bringing a new coach, a young QB, and a lot of young drafted talent.
