With Chip Kelly as the new Head Coach the Eagles will want to go to the 3-4. With that in mind this defense is going to need a pretty big overhaul.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (4 years 24m)- Still has some to prove but hopefully the coaching staff can get him motivated and turn him into the great player that he can be.
Akeem Jordan (2 year contract)- Solid backup with good ST play.
Colt Anderson (2 year contract)- Great special teams player.
Jon Dorenbos- Our Long snapper.
Jake Scott (1 year contract)- Played pretty well at times filling in at guard. Solid backup.
Jairus Byrd S Buffalo- Needs to be the top FA priority. Can do it all and provide some leadership for the Eagles young secondary. Eagles need to make him one of the highest paid safeties in the NFL and he will spearhead the change of the secondary.
Andre Smith RT Cincinnati- BJGE ran for 5.5 YPR when running behind Smith. He is a great run blocker who can hold his own in pass protection. This move allows more flexibility along the O-line allowing Herremans to move back to guard.
Antwan Barnes OLB San Diego- Remember him? Had an 11 sack season in 2011 but had a down year this year and was IRed with a hamstring injury. A low risk move for a guy who should at least be a solid backup.
Eagles trade Trent Cole to Atlanta for a 4th round pick- It will take more than one year to get acclimated to the 3-4 and Trent is ageing and coming off of a down year. Atlanta is going to need help at DE if they hope to try and reach the SB next year. Trent Cole is a solid veteran option who the Eagles can still get a decent pick for him.
Eagles trade Carolina (pick #4 for picks #14 and #45) Carolina has two big needs at DT and CB. They can Take Star if he is still there or jump ahead of Detroit to take Dee Milliner. This could be Ron Rivera's last year if his team doesn't play well so he will want another player that can make an impact on the defense like Kuechly did last year.
1 (from Carolina)- Dion Jordan DE/OLB Oregon- One of Chip Kelly’s guys. Will also fit in pretty well as a 3-4 rush LB. Has a lot of potential and Chip Kelly knows this best having seen him play in college
2- Robert Woods WR USC- Will be a game changer from the slot receiver position. Is as NFL ready as any other prospect can be. Had a drop off in production this year due to the emergence of Marquise Lee but can come in and take Jason Avant’s spot.
2 (from Carolina)- Jordan Poyer CB Oregon State- Chip wants an aggressive defense. Poyer had 7 INT’s last year and is a smart player who can play man and zone as well as tackle pretty well (in comparison to last years Eagles secondary). Poyer reminds me of a slightly bigger and tougher Asante Samuel. They both have a lot of quickness but not as much straight line speed. They are both also good ballhawks.
3- Jonathan Cyprien SS Florida International- Coming from a pretty small school and has been projected as a 4-5th round pick. Not after his senior bowl performance. He is a physical football player who led his team in tackles and INTs.
4- William Gholston DE Michigan State- at 6-7 280 pounds he may be a little light for a 3-4 DE. But he is fast for his size and can defend the run well. Needs a little work on pass rushing technique.
4 (from Atlanta)- Matt Scott QB Arizona- Has good speed and can make the deep throw. He also ran the zone-read in college. He lost his job last year to Nick Foles but is the duel-threat type QB I get the feeling Chip Kelly will want. At 6-2 202 pounds he may need to put on some weight to be able to take the hits and has had some accuracy issues. This may depend on Foles’ relationship with Scott but he can be a good project while challenging Foles for the starter.
5- Kwame Geathers NT Georgia- At 6-6 355 pounds, Geathers is a huge guy who could be a risk to give the starting NT position to. Had 40 tackles (5 for loss) last year but played with a lot of great college players this year. He was the 2nd best DT on the team but that says more for the ability of John Jenkins then the inability of Geathers. If he can hold his own the Eagles will have a great 3-4 DL.
6- Denard Robinson QB/WR Michigan- Before you hate on this hear me out: Denard Robinson will come in as more of a WR project than a QB. Very few people in the NFL have his combination of size ( 6-0 197 pounds) and his speed (4.32 40 time). He did not impress at all at the Senior Bowl so he will probably be there at this pick and would be a huge project. With that being said I also envision some form of the Wildcat where Denard comes in at QB and Foles lines up as wideout. Denard could run a couple zone-reads and be an added wrinkle teams need to account for. At worst he’d be a good scout team QB for when the Eagles play the RGIIIs of the world.
7- Mario Benavides C Louisville- Experienced center for added depth if Kelce can’t fully come back.
7- Joseph Fauria TE UCLA- A 6-7 255 pound TE who caught 12 TDs last year. He needs to work on blocking but could be a good red-zone target and is pretty fast and elusive for his size.
