This is my first fan post, so sorry if it's not very good. I noticed most people on here want the Eagles to use a high draft pick on a cornerback this year. Some want to take Dee Millliner with the number 4 overall pick. Others want to trade the pick for the newly available Darrelle Revis. But their are some solid free agents out the Eagles could look at instead and save their draft picks for other needs like Safety.
1.) Sam Shields- Shields is only 25 years old, but he has already developed into one of the best corners in the game. He stepped in nicely for an injured Charles Woodson this season for the Packers, and has shown he can cover anyone on the field. He is a restricted free agent this off season, so it would likely take a massive contract to take him away from Green Bay.
2.) Derek Cox- Cox is one of the more underrated corners in the game. Not to many know him because he plays on a bad team in Jacksonville. He has 12 interceptions in just 4 years. The main knock on him is his inability to stay healthy. He has missed missed 17 games over the past 3 season with various injuries. This might make him come at a discount and I would take a chance on him.
3.) Carey Williams- Many will see him play in the Super Bowl next weekend. He is a very feisty player who is not afraid to be physical. Philadelphia fans will love his style of play. He played well as the Ravens number 1 cornerback after Lardarius Webb went down with a torn ACL earlier in the year. I could see a 3 year deal for him.
4.) Leodis McKelvin- He is slightly undersized, but a solid corner non the less. He has held his own in Buffalo this season despite being part of a terrible defense. He also has a lot of experience as a kick returner, so he holds duel value there.
5.) Tracy Porter- He has had a lot of trouble staying healthy over his career, and that was never more true than this season when he only played in 6 games for the Broncos, mainly due to a seizure like symptoms. He has proven to be a play maker when he is on the field however, as his interception returned for touchdown in the super bowl off Peyton Manning clinched victory for the Saints. On a 1 year deal, he could provide some play making that the Eagles have lacked the last couple of years.
6.) Jerraud Powers- Another player who's value on the open market is down due to injuries since he has never played a full 16 games for the Colts before. He is a solid cover corner on the outside, who doesn't get to many interceptions, but is fundamentally sound. He was really coming on this year before he got hurt, and could continue his progress on the Eagles as a number 2 corner.
7.) Antoine Cason- A former first round pick by the Chargers, Cason has been inconsistent over the course of his career. He was beat deep on multiple occasions this year. He still has some potential with a change of scenery. He has good size, and could possibly thrive on a 1 year deal with the Eagles.
8.) Kyle Arrington- He took a big step back this season with 0 interceptions just 1 year after he had 7. He was moved around a lot like most Patriot's dbs, and ended up playing mostly in the slot as the season wore on. The Eagles should try to pry him away from New England to see if he can regain some of his 2011 form.
9.) Alan Ball- A former Safety, he has the ability to play all over the field. He has excellent size for the position, and showed himself as a decent cover corner this year for Houston when Jonathan Joseph missed a few games due to inury. He would be relatively cheap and can play inside and out for Chip Kelly's new defense.
10.) Eric Wright- He technically isn't a free agent, but the Buccaneers are reportedly set to release him this off season. He comes with some off the field baggage, most recently being suspended this season for taking Aderall. He is, however, a solid cover corner who managged to get a pick 6 off Eli Manning this year and will be out to prove himself this year, most likely on a 1 year deal.
One other name I would like to see as possibly a 4th corner is Bryan Mccann from the Dolphins. He could back up every corner position and is a very good returner which the Eagles could use since Boykin failed there this year.
So there are some realistic options that I think the Eagles should consider.
