Mel Kiper Mock draft 1.0: Eagles go defensive

Streeter Lecka

Check out our 2013 Eagles mock draft central for more opinions on who could be the #4 pick in April.

ESPN's Mel Kiper has released his first mock draft of the year and it's refreshingly different from a lot of what else we're seeing out there.

Kiper mentioned a few things he's hearing/thinks that I found interesting. For one, the league is very lukewarm on the QB class which is no surprise. However, he expects one or two passers to rise during the draft process. This class is very defense heavy at the top and so far, no skill player has separated himself from the pack.

Here's his top 10.

1. Kansas City Chiefs - Luke Joeckel, OT

2. Jacksonville Jaguars - Damontre Moore, DE

3. Oakland Raiders - Star Lotulelei, DT

4. Philadelphia Eagles - Dee Milliner, CB

Analysis: People need to forget the idea that Philly is deep at corner. You watch the tape and it simply wasn't true in 2012. I expect changes in a secondary where it's possible that on a per-play basis, the best corner for Philly this season was rookie Brandon Boykin. The top cornerback in the draft is always going to be a huge draw, and Milliner could come out of the draft process worthy of going this high. He will improve as a technical corner, but has elite grades in terms of awareness, and particularly as a physical corner who can push wideouts off routes. He can defend the run and tackle at a very high level.

5. Detroit Lions - Jarvis Jones, LB

6. Cleveland Browns - Bjoern Werner, DE

7. Arizona Cardinals - Chance Warmack, G

8. Buffalo Bills - Manti Te'o, LB

9. New York Jets - Barkevious Mingo, DE

10. Tennessee Titans - Dion Jordan, DE

The first skill player off the board is WR Cordarrelle Patterson to the Dolphins at #12. He has no QBs in round one and 19 of the 32 picks are on the defensive side of the ball including 6 DEs and 5 DTs.
