Technically "Potent Potables" means strong drinks, but those of you familiar with old SNL "Celebrity Jeopardy" skits will understand it is merely another name for "Random Thoughts." I've seen plenty of these weekly reviews on BGN in the past, but I figured I'd try my hand at it....as I did for this year's draft. In no particular order...Here goes...
Ngata's shadow engulfed Dallas Reynolds lining up for his 1st snaps after replacing Kelce. I'd like to thank Dean Peas for not realizing the near 100% probability that Vick would be rolling out of the pocket on the following play. And while I'm at it, Thank You Dean Peas for the lack of blitzes from the Secondary.
Chas Henry followed up a great game with an absolute clunker. At this rate he better be the best damn holder in the league.
Let's hope the injury and concussion concerns that caused Brandon Boykin to slip to the 4th round don't ever come to fruition. So far, Boykin looks like a more than adequate replacement for Hanson in the slot and also takes over for Asante as the "Eagles CB with a last name to which idiot fans like to add an 'S' to the end."
Copy/Paste weekly thought...Michael Vick is both maddeningly frustrating and amazingly talented. I think I'm just going to start calling him "Russia"...see Winston Churchill.
Continuing with Vick, he throws one the prettiest deep balls in the history of the league.
After the past two weeks, I think it is pretty safe to assume that Kevlar vest works. That said, In a percentage breakdown assessing blame for hits taken by Vick, I'd say 10% O-line and 90% Vick.
The Eagles' D-line really needs and may soon deserve a nickname, but at this point it would only be forced.
This just in, Lesean McCoy is really frickin' good. I wonder how much better he would be if Jackson and Maclin were more consistently willing blockers.
The Eagles need a touchdown with a 1st & goal from the 3 yard line in what is 4 down territory with an All-Pro back and an interception prone QB that makes poor decisions but is a world class athlete. Calling a pass play on 2nd & goal with 1 yard to go in that situation should almost be a fireable offense.
There was a lot of contact in the Secondary allowed this week across the league. I'd expect an over-correction this week and hopefully that over-correction entails welcoming back the real Refs.
Remember when the Eagles were a great screen team? Is the lack of a screen game due to a change of philosophy, an incapability on the part of the Mudd line, or an incapability on the part of the QB...I'd tend to lean towards the latter.
Nobody seems to complain about Andy Reid pressers after they win, even though he generally says the exact same thing.
I've been singing Al Green to a rotating slideshow on my screensaver of Demeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks. I think I'm not alone in that Bromance.
I'd like to see the Eagles give Tapp some more snaps to showcase him for a potential trade. There are a lot of 43 teams in need of a pass rusher, and with a weekly inactive 2nd round DE and injury enhanced O-line need, I'd hope the Eagles are exploring their options. If they keep 6 DEs all year, I wouldn't be opposed to shopping Babin for draft picks in the offseason.
It is probably too early to draw conclusions, but so far the Eagles D looks championship caliber. Hopefully that crosses Vick's mind the next time he throws back across his body...I won't be holding my breath.
I've been a constant defender of Nnamdi, but I have a feeling that will be a tough position after a week 4 game with the Giants when he is matched up against Nicks and Cruz. Let's hope the D-line continues to be his best friend.
The Eagles once again have won the salary cap super bowl. I'm sure that DRC's agent took notice.
With the continuation of average Special Teams play, is Bobby April on the Hot Seat? He should be.
On to the Cardinals...I expect a high volume of blitzes and press coverage coming this week from the Cards and I hope the Eagles, specifically Vick/Reynolds, are ready for it.
With a dome stadium, a fanbase excited about a huge win against the Pats, and a patchwork Eagles O-line....I'll set the over/under on Eagles' false start penalties at 4.
Traveling to the west coast after a physical game against Baltimore is clearly a trap game...made more so by the fact that the Eagles are 2-0, but also less so since the Cards are also 2-0. It is going to take a lot of mental toughness, something this team has clearly lacked in the past, to go into the desert and get a W.
- Usually, the most common MMQ water cooler one liners are cliche over exaggerations void of facts, aka sports talk radio. However, that is not the case with this one..."They don't win those games last year."
Nate Allen and Brandon Graham are reminding me of why I liked Nate Allen and Brandon Graham, reinforcing the fact that it takes a while to fully recover from serious leg injuries.
Fletcher Cox is only 21. I repeat, Fletcher Cox is only 21. Wow!
- Revelation, Juan Castillo is a much better D-coordinator with much better players. He clearly deserves a ton of credit for teaching Kendricks how to tackle and Ryans how to be a leader.
