I constantly think about our depth chart and always am puzzled when I get to the third tight end/fullback opening. I know Brackett is likely the leader in the clubhouse and the Eagles drafted Stanley Havili last year, but I think still think Chase Ford should be the guy. I will get this out of the way and say I don't think we need a full-time fullback and am very comfortable with Clay Harbor as an H-Back (I'd actually prefer that for him over playing tight end). That opinion is based on Owen Schmitt's lack of playing time last year (I believe it was 16% of the offensive snaps, but I could be wrong) and Andy's blatant disregard for the position before Leonard Weaver got here with Dan Klecko and Thomas Tapeh (yes, I do remember Jon Ritchie but I think that was more of a convenient set of circumstances).
I think Chase Ford should make this team over Brett Brackett because:
1) I only see Ford or Brackett making the team if we don't keep a "natural" fullback.
2) If that happens, Clay Harbor would likely play H-Back.
3) If that happens and the Eagles want to play 22 personnel (two backs, two tight ends) then they have to have another Tight End to take Harbor's place as the second tight end (he'll likely be at H-Back).
4) That extra tight end most likely will have to be able to block in the run game and more importantly, with King Dunlap or Demetress Bell manning left tackle, they certainly need to help block in the pass game.
From we've seen from camp, the only guy I am convinced Brackett is a better blocker than is Les Brown of the Dolphins (Hard Knocks). We have constantly been told Ford is a professional-level blocker. He can also catch (2 catches against PIT) and is huge and built for the position. Brackett is, in my opinion, too much of a tweener to be relied on to block in two tight-end sets. I know we all want out own Jimmy Graham or Gronk or Aaron Hernandez but I think in this offense, with our weapons, we need to have strong blocking. That's why Ford gets my vote, even though I'm sure I'm in the minority.
What do you guys think?
