Each season a player rises above all expectations and performs like no one else thought they would. In 2010 it was Arian Foster, last year it was Victor Cruz, this year...well that's what I am here to figure out. The following players do not only have what it takes to be a breakout player, they have the intangibles to keep it going in the many years to come.
1. Casey Matthews LB
Casey Matthews is a very interesting player. Last year he came to camp underweight. He also had very poor tackling skills. This made him play very horribly against the run. Some of this can be blamed on the Wide 9 scheme in place in which he was obviosly unfamiliar with but, that can not be to blame fully because he was burnt by Steven Jackson when he had a clear position to tackle. Even through all of this I think this year he is poised. The guy has really good instincts and he has bulked up in weght which I think will boost his ability to tackle, and finally 2 years under his belt in the Wide 9 scheme will most certainly help him as a player.
Breakout Chance: 60%
2. Phillip Hunt DE
Phillip Hunt was a break out player in the CFL when he led the league in 16 sacks when the season before he only registered three. While he has been a good sub in the D-Line rotation he has yet to translate that into the NFL. That is the reason why he bounces from roster to roster between seasons. He does not have the strength to get through tackles and guards, but when he does he is not consistent enough to keep it going into the next play. What he does have on the otherhand is speed and the burst off the line to go right pass the blocker in a split second. In the Wide 9 it will help you greatly. Also, now that Juqua Parker is not in the picture his role in the D-Line wil increase and with a full offseason in the scheme he is poised for a breakout season.
Breakout Chance: 75%
3. Jeremy Maclin WR
Writers across the nation have Maclin as one player poised to breakout out because he is a very very reliable reciever, but his quarterback is too hurt for him to catch more passes. During his three years at wide reciever he has yet to post 1000 yards recieving partly due to the style of play of his quarterback and becuase of his cancer scare. This year he has bulked up and has made significant strides this offseason. This is his year.
Breakout Chance: 95%
