McCoy set the Eagles franchise records for both rushing TDs (17) and total TDs (20). He rushed for over 1,300 yards, made his first Pro Bowl and was named an All Pro. The best part is, at only 23 years old this is a guy who hasn't even reached his prime. And as scary as it can be to give a RB a long term deal, McCoy won't even be 30 when this one is up.
Shady's deal puts a nice bow on offseason where the Eagles doled out huge money to their own guys. DeSean Jackson, Todd Herremans & Trent Cole all got big money extensions as well. The message sent was clear, this team takes care of their own and if you play well, you'll be richly rewarded for it.
"We are excited to continue this offseason of taking care of our own players," said head coach Andy Reid. "LeSean is one of the most electrifying running backs in the National Football League. He can do it all - run, catch, block and score touchdowns from anywhere on the field. He's worked extremely hard to turn himself into a Pro Bowl running back and he is well deserving of this contract extension. I give a lot of credit to Howie Roseman and Drew Rosenhaus for hammering out this deal."
The move also ties up the final piece of possible controversy or drama surrounding the team. Despite the fact that no one connected to the Eagles or McCoy was suggesting a hold out, the local media certainly had started to fan the flames of speculation... But now, with all the young guys locked up and happy we should be in for a drama free training camp.
And just as further proof that one deal can set a market. Take a look at what Arian Foster signed for on March 5th compared to what Shady signed today.
Foster - 5 yrs, $43 mil, $20.75m guaranteed
McCoy - 5 yrs, $45 mil, $20.765m guaranteed
McCoy will hold a press conference tonight at the Eagles facility, but he took to twitter just a few moments ago to exrpess his gratitude to both God and Jeff Lurie.
