The Eagles traded back in the 2nd round with the Green Bay Packers, moving from #51 to #59 and picking up a 4th round pick in the process. With the 59th overall pick, the Eagles took DE Vinny Curry from Marshall.
If you were looking for the Eagles to go BPA regardless of position... this may very well be it. The 6-3, 266 pound Curry has been a sack machine over the past two seasons for Marshall, posting 23 sacks over that span. He was also very good against the run in college and set the edge well, but it remains to be seen whether he can do that against NFL size OTs.
We probably did not see DE as a position of need, but it's likely that the Eagles just couldn't pass up the value of getting Curry at this point. He is an absolutely ferocious pass rusher and could really thrive under Jim Washburn.
Also, as a bonus, he grew up an Eagles fan in Neptune, NJ!
Mel Kiper raved about Curry after the pick.
You turn on a Marshall game, I don't care who it's against.. You notice the kid. He's a difference maker. He had 22 more tackles this year than Quinton Coples. He had 37 more tackles than Bruce Irvin. The guy's productive, that's all he does. And he loves the game.
Mike Mayock says this was value the Eagles just couldn't pass on.
"I really believe this is a pick by the Eagles where they say, he's too good, forget what our needs are. He's got a motor. He's going to get hustle sacks and play tough against the run."
