Here's my take on a few aspects of the Eagles for next year. Obviously, a lot of offseason is still to come. I want to get it down so I can point to it later and see how accurate it was. Offense. I think it will be competent but nothing spectacular. Vick will be erratic, I foresee turnovers and some bad decisions along with some good play. I don't expect him to show the consistency needed to go all the way. Still, there will be enough good play to keep up a decent passing offense, combined with some well-designed plays from MM. The receivers will be strong (including perhaps my favourite, Jason first down Avant, I hope he'll still be around). McCoy? I don't know. He should be good. Whether he will be better than good, I'm not sure. I incline to think not, but I might be completely off. I think the line will be good enough though not great. Defense. The line will be strong, we'll keep up the sack numbers and will play better against the run, partly through adjustments in the scheme. Cole is excellent, Jenkins and Babin look good, I like Patterson. There is some depth too, though I've never thought much of Graham. Linebacker will be better than last year but still a weakness. I don't think Ryans will be really good, just alright (which will be an improvement of course on last year), I like Rolle but can see him getting overpowered, I'm not sure we have much else. Personnel in the secondary is quite unclear at the moment, corner should be alright apart perhaps from slot corner. I think safety will be a weakness unless something happens there the rest of this offseason, I would point to this as the main weak point of the team at the moment. Free and strong could both be a lot better and unless something is added here, I am concerned. I don't think Allen is much good, Coleman can be good at times but I don't trust him to defend big plays or cover the intermediate middle. The schemes will be better, JC was showing some good stuff at the end of the season, but it will still be a long way short of JJ. No-one made me gladder to be an Eagle fan than JJ did. Overall, I don't think that Vick has it to lead us where we want to go. He will give us some grand moments, and I do enjoy watching him, but consistency and judgement will keep the team from going all the way. The defense won't be strong enough to let us get by with a merely good offense. However, the play-calling and some very good players should keep us in it. [On playcalling - my view of AR has been that he wants an offense that requires an excellent quarterback, but he has only ever had good quarterbacks. Still, I think the passing emphasis has been good for us. There's a strong argument that teams should pass more than they do, there is analysis at advancednflstats, and I wonder if the AR preference for the pass is one of the reasons we've had a lot of good seasons since he's been around] All this in no way qualifies as analysis, I'm posting it so I can mock myself later if I'm completely wrong, or point back to show that I called it right if it turns out this way.
