Draft Options

Assuming that we address the LB position in FA and that we plan to move Asante Samuel I would not be upset if we selected Dre Kirkpatrick, CB Alabama. When GB went on their SB run, a lot of it had to do with having a big strong corner (Charles Woodson) playing in the slot and helping with the run. Kirkpatrick has the talent of a first round corner with pretty rare size 6-2, albeit not that big compared to some receivers. From what I've read he seems to be a very strong tackler for a CB prospect. With his size and being in the slot he might even be the type of player that can be the answer to athletic TE's like Jimmy Graham and Fred Davis. Taking some stress off the LBs.

Originally I was one of the doubters of Kuechly, I really wanted us to address MLB in FA because our LBs get eaten up all day and have trouble shedding blocks. Before I was praying for a tulloch/lofton acquisition but when taking into account that we could likely add an early draft pick as a LB and someone like Hawthorne/Henderson/Connor for the same price as one of those two, I'd rather have options. If we decided to go with Kuechly I would not be upset whatsoever now, he has all of the intangibles and is already strong for his age. He can develop into a top tier LB but we can't expect that right away. I do see him getting better every year and still being a starter from day 1. If he adds a little more bulk as he matures (which should happen, dudes a junior) he could be great. Urlacher was a safety in college and bulked up as he got older. Not saying he will be Urlacher but he can get even stronger like he did.

Hopefully all the hype with Poe has died down as well. Watching him at the combine was a spectacle and all I could do was imagine what Washburn could turn that athletic freak into. I would be happy if we selected him because that means Washburn sees something special but I would also be just as happy with Cox, Brockers, or Worthy (whichever one washburn is intrigued by).

Our players at DT is very confusing to me. From what it sounds the coaches want to give Cedric Thorton a chance. I am a huge fan of Landri and don't want to see him go, he can wreak havoc. But the more I think about the situation with Laws and Dixon the more doubts I have. Dixon was great when he was healthy for us, but part of me thinks that we might be better off if someone tries to snag him from us and we receive the tender (not sure what it is). Banking on a player coming off an injury is risky, even though we love to do it. I think that the decision with Laws won't be made until training camp actually. Why not hold onto him and let him go once we are sure we have a replacement. If Thorton pans out to be what the coaches hope then cut Laws. Or at least hold onto Laws until after the draft just in case the DTs we would be interested in are not there or of the right value.

First Rounders I would be happy with: Kuechly, Kirkpatrick (as long as Asante is traded and LB is addressed), Poe, Cox, Brockers, Worthy, (not Still, i have a bias against PSU), Michael Floyd (wouldn't love but could understand), and Hightower (if we trade down or back into the first round).

DT rotations I would be happy with: Jenkins, Patterson, Landri, Dixon (if healthy), Thorton

Jenkins, Patterson, Landri, Washburns favorite DT in draft, Thorton/Dixon

One more note... I'm sure some people will say that Kirkpatrick translates as a better safety. Would that really be a bad thing for us?? I still like our safeties and think that without Asante they will play better but his versatility only makes him more valuable.
