The Eagles had until Monday at 4pm to place the franchise tag on free agent to be WR DeSean Jackson, but they decided not to wait that long. The team announced today that he has officially gotten the tag.
"We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that," said Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. "DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It's our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him."
DeSean said earlier this offseason that he wouldn't be particularly opposed to getting the tag, which will pay him at least $9.4 million guaranteed.
That is unless they reach a new long term deal with Jackson, which at least according to Roseman, they want to do. Putting the tag on Jackson is certainly a step towards getting a new deal done. It's going to give the team more time to see how the WR market develops and get a better idea of what his real value is.
