Prisco: DeSean Jackson Is A Top 5 Free Agent

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - DECEMBER 11: DeSean Jackson #10 of the Philadelphia Eagles warms up during a game against the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium on December 11, 2011 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

Pete Prisco of CBS sports ranked the top 50 players due to hit unrestricted free agency this year. Now, Prisco did not include guys that he is nearly 100% sure will get the franchise tag or resign. If he had, Drew Brees would have been the obvious #1 on the list. He also excluded Matt Forte and Calais Campbell from the list.

He ranks DeSean Jackson as his #5 free agent.

The ability should get him a huge contract. But the attitude might cut that down some. Even so, this kid is a game-changer. Those guys don't hit the market all the time. He turns 26 in December.

For one, I don't really think DeSean's "attitude" is much of an issue. For one, it's never been a problem before this year and his issues this year were related 100% to his contract. And this wasn't a Terrell Owens situation where he was upset about a $49 million contract. He was making about $600K. It doesn't excuse things perse, but it does provide a little justification and would lead me to believe that if he was well paid he would be the same good team guy and hard worker he always was.

I agree with Prisco on the age being a factor. DeSean is really only just entering what should be his prime years. And yes, he has game changing ability. But just how "huge" will this contract be? That's really what I'm not sure about.

There are several more complete WRs set to hit the market as well. Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson, Marques Colston, Stevie Johnson, Wes Welker & Reggie Wayne. Age will affect the upside of contract numbers for guys like Welker, Wayne & Bowe... but the fact is that whoever signs those guys will likely be out of the market for a top WR. Plus, there's probably 5 WRs that will come off the board in the top 50 picks in the draft.

So the relative abundance of WRs in the market this year and Jackson's inconsistency will certainly hurt his value. But his age and real gamebreaking ability is obviously going to attract interest.

Given the fact that so many WRs will hit the market, tagging Jackson and trying to work out a deal based on what all those other guys get makes some sense for the Eagles. Particularly, I'd take a look at what Stevie Johnson gets. Production-wise, he's not that different than DeSean. His contract could provide a pretty good baseline for what DeSean is worth.

Certainly more than Larry Fitzgerald does.

I did an internship with Prisco's radio show in college

He’s a nice guy and is well known, but his football sense is lacking. He is too closed-minded. He’s the same guy that at a draft party last year, literally shit his pants with joy over the Jaguars drafting Blaine Gabbert (who obvious to everyone, needed a year or two to sit). He makes conclusions that are extremes with little wiggle room.

Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"

i should have said practically

yeah, but i don't know how you metaphorically shit your pants lol

5year/ 7 mil plus performance based bonuses

by NJEaglesFan on Feb 9, 2012 5:59 PM EST reply actions

Here is how I would do it

Year 1: $10M signing bonus + $2.5M yearly salary – Total $12.5M
Year 2: $2.5M roster bonus* + $2.5M yearly salary – Total $5M
Year 3: $2.5M roster bonus* + $2.5M yearly salary – Total $5M
Year 4: $2.5M roster bonus* + $2.5M yearly salary – Total $5M
Year 5: $5M roster bonus* + $2.5M yearly salary – Total $7.5M

Total Contract 5 yrs for $35M

*roster bonus each year is paid as long as he is on the roster for game 1
Yearly bonus’ for Pro Bowl selection @ WR and/or PR can be included.

He averages $7M a year, can be up to $9M a year if he makes the Pro Bowl at both WR & PR, and gets a nice chunk right now as a way of making up for the last few years being @ $600k.

12.5 million is like all of our cap space.

well

obviously we have to cut some people if we want to pay DeSean. Like a certain CB with a big contract who has played really well but is somehow on the way out nevetheless.

Of course, we’re also entering the last year on LeSean’s rookie contract…

That wouldn’t be a 12.5 mil cap space hit. Bonus is counted over all years of deal so 10m / 5 years = 2 mil cap hit per + annual salary.

well he made 600k this year and he was fighting for a contract, correct?

i would give him another 600k this year and a $100.00 bonus for his tremendous effort this past season……

Biggest issue

is that we also have to sign Shady.

by smeagle on Feb 9, 2012 8:26 PM EST reply actions

More than just business

DeSean’s need for an attitude adjustment was more than just making business decisions. He was definitely very gun shy going over the middle, which was related more to the big hits he has taken rather than any distractions related to contract issues. Now, he may get over those issues for a big paycheck, but I smell (metaphorically) real physical fear in him that will translate into limitations on his effectiveness (read: useless for crossing routes, strictly a 789 receiver). Also, stupid penalties (taunting, celebration) and stupid statements (getting the gay community up in arms) also are translated into “attitude problems” in sports reporter speak. So I think it can be fairly said that he has attitude problems, that will impact his appeal and therfore salary.

we have more like 18 million

In cap room and with jam Jackson, justice, tapp, and asante all likely to be cut we will have plenty of cap room. the question is do u pay djack a bunch of money or get Vincent Jackson for a lil less. i say sign Vincent or draft a big physical receiver and use money on lb’s and a safety. just my two cents

haha you say it like it’s so obvious. did you watch any games this year? HE SUCKS…2 TDs dropped against the pats, running backwards on every punt return, killing momentum with that fumble in the bears game, 2nd most drops in the league, and he sits down whenever a defender comes within 2 steps of him. Desean Jackson lost games for us last season…

Lurie runs a dirty organization

Lets get the facts RIGHT!
Jackson has always been a respectful player. Jackson was never a T.O!
The fact is that this all comes down to his contract. After all he did for the Eagles, Jackson watched a felon QB that no other team would touch get signed for 100Mil , then he watched Nnamdi get 60mil.
Some how when it was Jackson’s contract time Lurie can’t find his wallet. All Philly ever did was use Jackson and you retarded fans think he’s wrong for having a chip on his shoulder? Get real!
Vick and Nnamdi combined don’t equal to Jackson’ worth to the team.
Let’s go, I bet next season Vick is going to get hurt again (suprise! suprise!) and Nnamdi is going to get burned again (suprise! suprise!) Maclin’s going to drop some more important catches(suprise) . Btw stop with all this “Nnamdi can’t play zone B.S”, Nnamdi got burned in man coverage aswell. Some people don’t get it! What Brown did for Miami he’s never going to do for the Eagles, what Nnamdi did for the Raiders he’s never going to do for the Eagles. Funny as hell we signed old ass Nnamdi and Vick for major money but starved a young Jackson. What Lurie and gang did to Jackson was straight dirty! Why? Because if these bastards can’t rob you blind they try to assassinate your character. Eagles organization alone tarnished Jackson’s charachter. All you idiots talking about how bad he played this year STFU! Ask yourself this “did Vick play good this year? Did Maclin play good this year? Did Samuel play good this year? Did Nnamdi play good this year? Did DRC play good this year?” Only McCoy played good this year, the rest of the team sucked from the coaching staff to the O-Line, the db’s the lb’s & cb’s! So why the F**k does everbody act like Jackson alone had a bad year?

Then we got you other fans that say you want to keep Jackson but your concerned about the salary cap? Are you kidding? If we can’t afford him then just say so and let him walk, don’t slander the man because you can’t afford him!

BTW don’t compare him to the other free agent WR’s, Djax is a game changer!
Put Jackson’s poor results on Vick. I bet your top 10 wr’s would suck under Vick.
For example Colston’s stats come from being a reciever for Drew Brees .
Think about it, McNabb, Kolb & Vick. That’s the bullshit he had to work with. Can you imagen if Manning Bros.,Brees or Brady had a chance to work with him?

McCoy’s next ! I can hear it already “pay da man” LOL! Plus McCoy out of all people better be praying that Jackson stays, because when coaches don’t have the db’s backed up it gets a hole lot harder to juke.

Bottom line Lurie burned 160 Mil for a washed up QB & CB and for thier mistake they want jackson to take a pay cut. As much of a Eagles fan that I am, I rather he goes of to a team that pays him what he’s worth than sticking around to get robbed!

by EaglesNeedD on Feb 10, 2012 7:08 AM EST reply actions

take a look at all the deals given to WRs over the last few years and tell me all you need to do is pay a guy and he’ll be great. Santonio Holmes, Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards, TJ Housh, Roy Williams. Basically anyone not named fitz sees production drop when the sign a big deal. and i love how you want to rip down every eagles player not named desean jackson, as if that makes djax look better. Jackson had the 2nd most drops in the league this year, lays down everytime he is about to get hit, and seriously didnt get deep ONE TIME this season. contract and personality issues aside, the kid ISNT THAT GOOD, quit dick riding

by mpd2005 on Feb 10, 2012 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly!!

DeSean got snaked so hard by our FO… He was promised an extension at the begining of his 2nd year, remember? Then the CBA got fucked up, and we gave Kolb one, and Jackson said “It’s alright, when the CBA is settled I’ll get paid, it’s alright, I’ll wait”

Then after waiting and performing, and being the best player on our entire offense for 3 years, when the CBA gets resolved, what do we do? Cheap shot him, call him a cancer, and sign SS12, Brown and Young for around 10M, and keep paying Djax his 600,000… Shit, I think that PR for a TD against NY was probably worth more than his entire salary this year.

I don’t get why people are even judging him on this year? He was ineffective because he wasn’t paid when he was PROMISED he would be… The NFL isn’t only a “what have you done for me lately” league, but it’s also a “what WILL you do for me in the FUTURE” and it’s pretty obvious he’s gunna perform in the future since he’s only 26 and all.

Just wait until December..

by maximdim on Feb 10, 2012 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

Football is also a game of motivation

You’ve gotta workout and train everyday, or else you fall behind quickly.

And clearly Jackson wasn’t motivated to play since he was sleeping in and shit, so no wonder he didn’t look full strength

My point is, a motivated DeSean Jackson is someone you want on your team, and is easily one of the top playmakers in the entire league.

Just wait until December..

Cut the bitch

Sorry DeSean, when you went pussy this past year, you showed who you really are. I tried so hard to love you, but you proved that you are nothing more than an extremely talented showboat with a teensie weensie mental motor.

Sign Vincent Jackson or Marcus Colston, two beasts who can stretch the field and are not afraid to go over the middle.

The coaches are to blame, the players are to blame. Sorry to say, but Andy has lost this team. 53 super talented individuals with no heart.

by oldasquick on Feb 10, 2012 9:46 AM EST reply actions

Colston? Definitely. Vincent Jackson is going to command entirely too much money to bring him on board right now. He averages about $11mil/year and that would prevent us from making pretty much any other notable signings.

by maximdim on Feb 10, 2012 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but things change...

I think the last 12 months of Kolb’s life are pretty indicative of how much the Eagles value him at this point…

Just because you passed on a player in the draft 5 years ago doesn’t mean you wouldn’t consider signing him on as a cheap FA (with upside) to fill a team need.

by teezy33 on Feb 11, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

I love DeSean...

…but I think it’s time to part ways with him. It’s such a hard thing to say about one of your favorite players, but the constant productivity isn’t there. Personally, I want Marques Colston on this team…badly. We need a big guy, period and he’s our solution. He brings extreme versatility to the team by being able to go over the middle (something you RARELY see DJacc do), provide veteran leadership (what better of a mentor for Maclin?), burn people down the sidelines, etc. I also think he could draw the same type of coverage as DeSean, which will still free up Maclin, Avant, Cooper, etc,

We need consistency, we need a big guy, we need someone with veteran leadership and Colston brings all of that to the table. Add to the fact that he’s been making a reasonable $5mil/year and I think we have what we’re looking for…
