2012 NFL Draft: Mel Kiper's Top 5 WRs

Earlier we combed through Mel Kiper's big board for the top 5 inside linebackers, so now we're going to take a look at another potential need in the draft, wide receiver. If in fact DeSean Jackson comes back, the Eagles won't be in the market to take a WR early, but if not they certainly could be.

Justin Blackmon - OSU - *6-1, 215

Michael Floyd - Notre Dame - 6-3, 224

Kendall Wright - Baylor - 5-10, 190

Mohamed Sanu - Rutgers - *6-2, 215

Alshon Jeffery - South Carolina - *6-4, 229

Kiper says this is a deep class at WR.

The decision by Sanu to make the jump deepens this group, and makes it possible that all five guys will be gone before the end of Round 1. Blackmon is the safe leader of the pack right now, and should maintain that position if he runs well during the evaluation process. There isn't much not to like about his tape. A nice range here, with smaller targets like Wright, mid-sized guys, and a massive target in Jeffery.

This is also a very deep free agent class for WRs, so it's a good year to be in the market for a wideout. Probably not a great year to be one looking to get paid...

Yeah, that sounds like it could be the case, unless he takes a much lower contract. If we need to pay a wideout big money, I’d rather it be VJax ::dreams::

Me, too

I want everyone who half-assed their way through this shitty season to be fired, sooner rather than later.

Asante, DeSean… you’re on deck.

Asante

Either half-assed or regressed. 3 INTs last season, and he was consistently out of position. It was his failure to hang with Larry Fitz that caused Jarrett to have to run with him down the field. Result? John Skelton completes a 4th quarter TD, Cards win.

If he half-assed, he should be fired immediately. If he regressed? Well, DRC and Nnamdi are better and younger.

by UnclaimedFright on Feb 8, 2012 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention,

Asante’s inability to play anywhere but on one side of the field effectively hamstrings our (shitty) Defensive Coordinator. He doesn’t need more things working against him, he already has to cope with a massive lack of talent as a D-Coordinator.

by UnclaimedFright on Feb 8, 2012 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

Asante had a good year. He caused the second worst (behind Revis) QB rating when they targeted him.

His play isn’t what concerns me personally. It’s that he’s the reason we play zone coverage. I’m hopeful that if we lose the zone corner, Juan will actually play his remaining press coverage corners in… I don’t know… press coverage? And of course, there’s also the 9M in savings.

I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.

by Avant-Garde on Feb 8, 2012 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

The lower INTs may be due to not having Mikell (or another good safety) over the top. With Mikell, Asante could take risks and if he missed Mikell would make the tackle. Without a solid safety Asante had to be more conservative.

Yeah I think the Eagles should start getting an influx of young talent at DB.

Hanson’s getting old, and we can’t count on both Brandon Hughes and Marsh both turning into top CB’s.

Im a big fan of Joe Adams, wouldn’t mind if the eagles spent a 2nd or 3rd on him. Like him as a WR and also that he has PR/KR ability.

Honestly if we got him I'd be happy.

I think even if we keep Desean we should grab him due to the fact he looks like a guy who can be atleast a role player/slot guy but also has that potential to be a top target.. Not to mention his return ability.

That being said I don’t see him as more than a 3rd rounder.

Funny how all of these heights and weights line up with the CBSSports ones, when the LBs were all off.

I’m a big fan of Sanu. He looks pretty much identical to Hakeem Nicks – strong receiver with great hands and good route running who can attack the middle of the field. He may not fit the mold of Eagles receivers in recent years, but I think it’d be worth changing up our system to include a possession receiver. They’re so tough to cover, and they’re a great safety valve in key situations. I think Sanu could really help iron out the inconsistency in our offense. If Desean leaves and we get a pick in the 25-35 range, I’d love for the Eagles to draft him.

He also had some inconsistent QB play

You can’t just judge a guy on his numbers, that would lead you to a lot of wrong information.

by slandog on Feb 8, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Gotta say, this is a big part of Jeffrey’s stats. Garcia was probably the worst QB in the SEC, and he was going up against SEC defenses, so he wasn’t exactly in a position to rack up stats. The defenses Blackmon, Floyd, Wright, and Sanu were facing were significantly worse than what Jeffrey was facing, and Blackmon, Floyd, and Wright had much better QBs. CBS sports gave him a mid-2nd round grade, and I wouldn’t mind taking him if he falls that far.

I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.

by Avant-Garde on Feb 8, 2012 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

Garcia was a drunkard that got kicked out of the program. This dude suffered through him

and some other no name that surprise! I forget. He is every bit as physical as he showed during the bowl game. He had to singlehandedly make up that entire offense once Lattimore went down. He was almost always double covered. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the 2nd WR off the board. I’d rank him directly behind Michael Floyd and Justin Blackmon, and wouldn’t shock me if he went in the first 15 picks.

Check out his 2010 game tape when he didn’t have a mess of a quarterback situation. Talent wise, him and Blackmon are neck and neck.

by Route36 on Feb 9, 2012 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

I love Jeffrey

He was the top of the class before last season. But he had awful qb play and goes against tougher competition.

I like Floyd above all the receiver in this class though. Blackmon reminds me of Jason Avant. He’d be a great slot receiver. Kendall Wright is overhyped to me and is a poor mans D-Jax. Sanu seems good but also risky. The route-running and technique is definitely something you can work on but not every receiver can sell a corner. Makes me wonder if he could make an immediate impact.

Favorite Prospects: Martin, Burfict, Rainey, Curry

Blackmon reminds me of Jason Avant. He’d be a great slot receiver.

Not sure what game you watched but for most of the year (sans the bowl game because of injury) he was largely a outside WR. He can do pretty much everything and I think in 5 years he will be similar to Fitz Andre and some of the other top WRs.

by Mr.electric10 on Feb 8, 2012 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think he’s the same type of receiver as Fitz and Andre. Fitz is two inches taller, and has ridiculous hands. Andre is also two inches taller, and runs a 4.41 40. Blackmon is much more of an all-around guy, kind of like Sanu but with more talent. Like Sanu, I think Hakeem Nicks would be a better comparable.

Andre Johnson is a physical freak of nature – he’s 6’3 and runs a 4.41 40. Blackmon has average height and average speed (by NFL standards at least). He may have the hands and athleticism of AJ, but without the combination height and speed he’ll never be the same type of player.

Blackmon is a pipe-dream, so I want Sanu. I would be ECSTATIC if we got Sanu with our Kolb pick. I was a huge fan of him whenever I watched Rutger games. The dude is the perfect skillset that we need from a WR: Big, tough, strong, versatile, takes contact like Optimus Prime, great attitude, big hands, etc. The only weakness he has is technique, getting separation, and route running, but those are things that any WRs can work on. I really want that gritty, tough, YAC WR.

I just really want a Wide Receiver who will go up and fight for the ball.

We already have problems with our receivers getting separation, but he can fight for the ball and make plays without having to be wide open I’m all for it.

by Snax on Feb 8, 2012 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree about his route running. He has average height and average speed (4.57), so running clean routes is how he got open. Here’s Rob Rang’s assessment from CBSSports:

Route running: Quick burst off the line of scrimmage perhaps masking a lack of elite straight-line speed. Has enough speed to challenge vertically. Throttles down quickly, sinks his hips and has good burst left and right to generate separation on underneath routes. Used from a variety of positions, lining up inside in the slot, outside and put in motion. Courageous over the middle, often pulling away on drag routes and quick posts.

Dwight Jones-UNC

This guy could be real good. I like him and I believe he will be a 3rd or 4th round – @ 6’4" 225lbs – 2011 season – 85 catches for 1200 yds and 12 td’s , not sure about his 40 time or anything but he has broken some big plays in his career. This is my replacement for Desean.

Yea

I mean hands down we wouldnt have to break the bank with him and I think he would fill in great beside Maclin, Now we just need our FO to get it done as I think we need to get our D stright in our top 2 or 3 picks

by DcEagles29 on Feb 8, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

i agree

totally with everything you just said. I want the defense taken care of early also in the top 2 or 3 picks. And yea he’d be good lined up next to Maclin and Desean (assuming we keep him). And if he does have 4.5 speed like Avant-Garde indicated below than he would make our offense all the more dangerous, especially with how we like to stretch the field. He could go up and get balls and make catches across the middle (two things Desean tends to not do)

by shadyeagle25 on Feb 8, 2012 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

He runs a 4.53 40. Most of the top guys are in the mid 4.5s, so that’s very respectable for a guy his size. I think his stock is gonna rise as we get closer to the draft and get visions of Brandon Marshall when looking on his measurables. If we can’t get Sanu or Floyd, he’d be a good pick.

Will be one of the three best WRs to come out of this draft when it’s all said and done… if (and this is a huge “if”) he can stay healthy. Honestly I want Wright.

The kid fights for the ball and has some good speed to him. He’d be a valuable asset to any team.

Blackmon still heads my list of WR’s but he may be hard to get in position for but if the Eagles could do it and grab a WR I’d be happy.

Floyd seems like a good WR but I see him as more of a possession guy.

And the thing with Jeffrey is that people see his size and instantly think “Calvin Johnson”.. I’m not saying he’s bad, but he’s definitely the guy I see as “bust” material.

I think there is a set of 4 guys who you could argue as the #1 WR. Blackmon has certainly produced the most but I think he might be more Michael Crabtree than Dez Bryant (he’s a Boldin type receiver), he’s probably more physical than Crabs though; Blackmon is a bulldog on the field. Michael Floyd has injury and character issues but he is HUGE, fast and physical with great body control, concentration and hands (he’s a Larry Fitzgerald type receiver). Kendall Wright is a guy who can roast a defense at any time, he’s super fast and he is extremely tough and emotional (Steve Smith type receiver). And then there is Sanu who is super physical, tough, versatile and has really good hands (Jordy Nelson type).
