The Linc - Were The Eagles "Inches Away From Being Great?"
Moving On: 2012 Philadelphia Eagles - SB Nation Philly
There's always next year -- right, Eagles fans? Time to officially leave a dreadful, nightmarish 2011 season behind and look forward to what we can only hope is a better 2012. Here's a cursory, way-too-in-depth look at the upcoming offseason.
Trent Cole: Birds 'inches away from being great'
"We had a bad year. We just couldn't pull it off at the last minute," Cole said. "We were right there, inches away from being great, being a dominant team. I think some teams are going to be worried about playing us" in 2012.
Philadelphia Eagles claim offensive tackle D.J. Jones off waivers from the Ravens - baltimoresun.com
The Philadelphia Eagles have claimed D.J. Jones off waivers from the Ravens, who waived the undrafted rookie offensive tackle from Nebraska before their win over the Houston Texans in the AFC divisional round.
Eagles should look past draft to fill LB need
BC's Luke Kuechly is considered one of the top two inside linebackers available in this year's draft, but he's likely not enough to help the Eagles fill their needs, says Ron Burke.

it is from where mark sanchez’s current level of play to mediocre level of play, because if he could have at least played at a mediocre level we probably make the playoffs. btw eat a dick mark sanchez.
we should never have to rely on the likes of him in the first place

exactly!
1 inch, 3,000,000 miles is all the same. Anything less than a SB and you’re a loser(team not Trent specifically). This stands for 80% of the NFL teams. Teams like Cleveland, Indy, Miami, Oakland, Jacksonville, STL and TB have no business thinking a SB is reality. They have room to over achieve.
At least one more year of Andy and Juan. If they don't win it all they both better be gone!
No way Eagles draft a LB in the first round 2012.
We will see if Spags was in the right place at the right time in the Gmens SB run. Or was that the fluke year and he really is just mediocre.

I remember Jones in Nebraska and last year’s draft. He’s a great guy to have…as a backup. Great size, carries it well (Mudd), great footwork, probably a better run blocker then a pass blocker. The problem is that he’s very raw and doesn’t use his hands well (below average technique). I believe he played RT at Nebraska in 2010 and their rushing attack was amazing. With Mudd teaching him, he could be pretty good, if not a great back-up.

Got bad knees and a high motor? Well cmon on over to PHILLY, we'll do our best to put you in the right position and do a better job!
Cole knows what we all know… In saying that, ‘inches’ would have truly been controlling our own destiny down the stretch. One thing I can look forward to, & I haven’t seen this since Vick intially took over, is a HIGHLY motivated team.
Draft wise, we’re getting Ingram I tell you, & drafting Bowman next. Then we’re acquiring our MLB in FA & a reserve S; hopefully one w/ no injury history (Landry anyone?). Rainey or Demps will also be drafted by us, but def not to fill the role of reserve RB.
Alshon Jeffery would also be a pick that’d make me proud if we lose out on DeSean (or getting Bowe in FA who is sure to be Franchised).

There's always next year
Should that be our team slogan from now on?
In all fairness, the Giants were inches away from missing the playoffs alltogether…

It is a game of inches....
lucky bounces of a fumble, a KR coughing up the ball 2x’s in a game, a LB not turning his head to see the ball, a beautifully thrown pass up the sidelines, 12 men on the field to negate a fumble, a dropped pass, a great catch, a team believing in itself, a team believing in their coaches and scheme, a RB seeing a hole, a RB not seeing a hole and bouncing it outside, a picked up blitz, the right routes run, a batted down pass…………………………….WOW! You come out and do your best, leave it all on the field and you can still lose. If what you did last year Cole, wasn’t enough come back harder or expect a similar result.
At least one more year of Andy and Juan. If they don't win it all they both better be gone!

I seriously doubt Cole could possibly work harder than he already does…
"Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body."

really?
everyone can work harder. I see him and Herremans in Avalon at the Whitebriar almost every weekend in the summer drinking. Not that I condemn that (everyone should have fun) but guys like Herschel Walker never drank ran 10 miles everyday, did 1000 push ups and sit ups everyday, ate ONLY healthy food….etc
My point being working harder, smarter is always possible. Playing harder by being in better shape is possible. Showing up and teammates houses and making them work harder is possible. Being so friggen enthusiastic that you create an atmosphere of peer pressure to all get together and make winning a SB or die your life’s mantra is possible. There is always more.

Ummm
how many championships did Herschel win again? If your point is that Cole should work harder to be a winner, maybe Herschel should have ran 20 miles a day?
"Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body."

that's not my point
you’ve shifted my words to fit your argument. I never said; should work harder or if he worked harder….. But you win bro! I am glad you are so sure about something you know very little about. Trent is the hardest working human that ever lived! Or am I twisting your words now?

Just saw on CBS.com
That Hightower runs the 40 faster than Kuechly only by .02 but he is 23 pounds heavier! I hate not having the time or resources to scout these guys. There are so many contrary reports that I mine as well not care at all about what I read. I am no closer to knowing who is good vs bad as if I never payed attention at all.

Hightower is suited to be a 3-4 LB, Kuechly is a perfact fit for a 4-3 MLB.

I don’t think Ron Burke has much credibility as a talent evaluator (for starters, isn’t Vontaze more athletic than LK?), but this quote
“But he loses a lot of physical battles. If that’s the case against ACC competition, what’s going to happen when he tries to fight through traffic to tackle NFL backs? On just about every play I reviewed, Kuechly was neutralized whenever a blocker got at least one hand on him. That’s not good enough for an NFL middle man, and it’s certainly not worth a high draft pick.”
is what scares me the most about drafting LK. I know this is the minority position on LK, but after witnessing the total inability of this year’s LBs to shed blocks, I would go “safe rather than sorry” this year and try to sign a MIKE who has already shown the ability to make the plays required of a Wide 9 MIKE.
These “inches away from greatness” type delusions are the same type of comments I had gotten sick of in the regular season. You didn’t make the playoffs you didn’t win the super bowl you’re an 8-8 team and you weren’t close. You’re actually sitting with a group of 7 other 8-8 teams who were about as close as you, who aren’t telling the world they were inches from greatness.
This.
A thousand times this. These assholes better shut the fuck up and let their play do the talking next season. For once.
Thank you,
I expect this shit out of Asante or DeSean. You know, the smacked asses who couldn’t set their egos aside to help the team win in 2012.
I don’t expect this kind of self-aggrandizing BS from Trent Cole. Apologize for the horrorshow of a season you just turned in, and STFU until training camp.
by UnclaimedFright on Feb 8, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions
I see what Trent is saying but he probably shouldn’t have said it since it’s going to piss a lot of people off.
This is going to piss people off because this just makes it more disappointing that we didn’t make the playoffs so here it goes. We were the only team to finish in the top 10 in yards both on offense & defense & we were one of two teams(Houston the other) to finish the season in the top 10 in points both on offense & defense. Our biggest problem wasn’t Juan it was turnovers if we fix the turnover problem we’ll be in the playoffs next year
The Legend
He's right
All are lives as football fans we were told that football is a game of inches. While I love Cole and he is one of my favorite players " inches" isn’t good enough. I love the Philadelphia Eagles and if you cut me I will literally bleed green. But when people look back at the Philadelphia Eagles 2011 history won’t say " O they where a great team that where inches away from being great". They will say they where just another one of the 31 teams that couldn’t get it done that year. We all that the city of Philadelphia deserves a Super Bowl more then any other team in the league. We are always “inches” away from doing something. “Inches” away from winning Super Bowl 39, “Inches” away from winning 4 NFC Championships, “Inches” from winning several winnable games this season. How bout we stop settling for inches and go for wins and consistancy. Im optimistic that this team can turn the ship around this season because the city of Philadelphia is as hungry as its ever been for a Championship.. GO EAGLES!!!
Drafting Matt McCoy 2k12 is going to be a huge mistake
just watch, Ive said it before I’ll say it again, if he barely gets off blocks in the ACC WTF IS HE GONNA DO IN THE NFL? Why do we always have to draft the rudy of the draft? Why do we always target projects and tweeners? Year after year we thinkg we’re gonna get it right and we dont, whys it gonna be different now?

Ron burgundy( err..Burke) or trent saying the dumbest phrase since “dream team”
First off, anchor man. I don’t think your FA backers are even going to hit the market. Second, LK and Burfict are LOADS better than what we have. Isn’t that the point of the draft: upgrade the weaknesses.
Now onto trent cole, a great football player he is. A great thinker he is NOT. We were 8 and motherfucking 8! Don’t make sound like we were close because we almost got lucky. Shut your mouth and let your play do the talking and not your mouth.

look at it this way
the giants were inches away from being bad and they won the sb
There is no gurantee Chaney will ever be the same player.
After Chaney’s neck injury I’m not so sure he could be our starting SAM. I think it’s a no brainer to draft Kuechly at #15. If he is not the starting MIKE he can be the starting SAM.
The best possible LB corps we could have would be this IMO.
WILL: BRIAN ROLLE
MIKE: STEPHEN TULLOCH
SAM: LUKE KUECHLY
We need a veteran LB it’s an absolute must in free agency.
I don’t think Kuechly can play SAM

It's pretty easy to fall a few inches short
When you’re the smallest defense in the NFL.
2011 SB is not worth mentioning
Giants the worst SB in the history of the NFL. Is there a way to erase it out of the history books….sad SonavaBitch!

Only inches away, and we’ve got 4 games worth of season ending momentum. Fuck yeah.

I'm not sure what Castillo expects out of his MLB
But I don’t think that we’re going to need an extremely rangy, athletic LB. Kuechly would be a bad fit somewhere like Chicago where they run a Cover 2 and need their MLB to stretch the middle of the field. We just need a guy that can tackle, or at least wrap up a player long enough to get help.
One of the things I noticed late is the inability to bring down receivers even with help. Chaney and Fouku, as much as I like them, have issues reading the gaps. It doesn’t matter how athletic you are, because running backs are a hell of a lot faster and if they bust the right gap, they will be in the end zone before any of our guys even figured out what the heck happened.
Kuechly might have trouble defending Gronk and Graham. Totally fine, those guy are freaks and its hard for anybody in the league to defend them. If we can shut down the pass and run game otherwise and force turnovers, the defensive unit should be solid.
valid points brother man
this is why I think Tulloch is our only sure bet at MLB. He’s not perfect. But he plays well in this system.
I would love more than anything for us to guess(draft) a guy who turns out great for the next 12 years like Ray Ray, Urlacher, Willis…etc But I don’t think we have the time to guess and be wrong. This team is teetering on implosion.
