Todd McShay Mocks Devon Still To Eagles

STATE COLLEGE, PA - NOVEMBER 12: Devon Still #71 of the Penn State Nittany Lions celebrates after sacking Taylor Martinez #3 (not pictured) of the Nebraska Cornhuskers during the game on November 12, 2011 at Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

ESPN's Todd McShay released his latest mock draft and he has Penn State DT Devon Still heading to the Eagles.

Opinions on Still vary widely. I have an early-second round grade on him, but many feel he is a mid-first-rounder. There is a lot to like about his upside, given his size and ability to penetrate and disrupt. He is inconsistent on tape, but it's hard to find guys with his combination of skills. Alabama S Mark Barron would be a consideration, but the Eagles got S Jaiquan Jarrett in the second round last year, and this would be a bit early for an outside linebacker like North Carolina's Zach Brown. Philadelphia fans, feel free to disagree.

McShay has Luke Kuechly, who he calls "Sean Lee without the health issues," coming off the board at #12 to the Chiefs.

This is one of those picks that depends a lot on what happens in free agency and before the draft. There's a decent chance that the Eagles let Trevor Laws walk and we can't ignore the big bump that Cullen Jenkins is set to receive. Antonio Dixon is coming off a IR season. Plus, Mike Patterson is going to have surgery to remove that AVM on his brain.

DT might be a position where they are ok, but it might also be pretty unsettled. My first reaction was to not like this pick, but after thinking about it, I'll really have to see how the offseason shakes out first.

This is who...

Matt Alkire (the other member of Lawlor’s ScoutsNotebook site) mocked to us as well.

As for the pick… it could make sense, I guess. I don’t know much about Still, but I’m saying that going DT could make sense if there’s a player who’s worth it there. It depends on what happens in FA though. If they don’t address LB in FA, then this pick will probably piss me off a little more, depending who else is still on the board.

As for the DT picture, I hope they let Laws walk. He’s just hasn’t been a consistent performer here, although he did look good in 2010 from what I can remember. I’d like to see Landri back. I hope the Eagles pay CuJo – I think he’s worth it. He was one of the best run defending DTs (according to either PFF or FO, I can’t remember which) in the league. Dixon, Patterson are question marks.

I think most people mocking us to take a DT, is because Kuechly is gone by pick 15 and there is no other LB worth our pick at 15.

Not to sound like that guy...

Disclaimer: i am not trying to sound cool, nor do i claim to have dead on inside info. My buddy’s friend is in the personnel dept and saw the dude a little over a month ago (before the season ended) and of course, like an asshole, I asked “so we drafting a linebacker in the first or what?!” the man said “yea maybe, or dt, we’re pretty set” so I really wouldn’t be surprised by this pick, and a lb in the 2nd. Of course this was before the senior bowl, and the birds do love the senior bowl.

As a Penn Stater, I'd love this

But I’m not sure if the Eagles should use their 1st rounder on a DT.

That said, he’s a monster of a player.

Dude was a beast last year.

Some guy at PSU Hershey Med Center just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines".

Its tough

Reid has used more 1st round picks on the D-line than he has the O-line. I could see us going for BPA or actually trading down and trying to land Brown from UNC if we can get a good package in return.

I wouldn’t mind (hypothetically) picking up at least another 3rd rounder or second round pick for next year if we can drop a few spots and still land the guy they want.

Again, it all depends on FA, and what the front office decides to do.

It’s so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don’t say it.

I have an early-second round grade on him, but

this is the Eagles we’re talking about here. They might even trade up to take him.

There are plenty of DT's who we could pick up in the later rounds... Not many people run the system we do so the guys

we need to fit in there will be available late.

Can Still play two gap?

Its unsettling to think that Washburn may only be here for one more year. Do we take a guy higher up because he can thrive in the system we have now, only to get rid of a 1st/early 2nd round guy next year?

The model of consistency has become very inconsistent……

I mean we can pass on Still fill another need and find a guy who'd be

good in the 1 gap in the later rounds.

I think they're a great way for us to kill time and I like seeing other peoples views of things

but for the most part it’s useless, more holes open when we don’t resign players and others get filled by the signing of players.

Out of this draft class...

I feel as though he is best fit for Wash’s system. Though 15 would be a reach, I feel like we could get him in the 20-24 range. There are many comparisons of him to Richard Seymour. Washburn can make a star out of this kid. Still’s best performances of the season has to be the Nebraska and Illinois games where he singlehandedly kept them in it and they won the latter of the two.

by eaglemaniac814 on Feb 4, 2012 3:46 PM EST reply actions

I would be okay with this.....

But how long will Washburn be around? Heck, what happens if this organization implodes and we go Juan and 15?

I've stated this before along with a few other posters

I think this pick makes a ton of sense. I see him going anywhere from 10-20 so if makes sense that we would take him. DT is a question mark outside of Cullen Jenkins. Landri if resigned is only a backup and only really valuable in this system. Mike P had brain surgery, which I think he’ll recover soon but you never know. Laws was too little, too late to stay. Still can play Still can play in most systems, just in case Andy is fired. He’s a versatile DT. I am not a huge fan of Penn St. guys in the past 10 years. I think if a guy falls like Reiff (OT, Iowa) or if we don’t sign Mathis…we could go DeCastro here (OG, Stanford). I think this is the 2nd most likely option by behind Kuechly.

Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"

Drafting BPA seems like the best way to build a team.

Don’t kill me for this but thats my way of thinking. In the draft, grab the best you can get and then fill team needs with FA and trades.

To a point,

I mean most teams have their board and they list the best prospects in this draft that fit our team in performance, style and personality so they choose from there…

I mean say we resign Desean and the BPA on the board is a WR not named Blackmon or Wright but the 2nd guy on the board is a LB who could be of more use than the WR then it’d be ok to take the LB in my book.

What About...

The DT we have from Arkansas or Arkansas State or something? & although Dixon is coming off a knee injury, it’s not like his position relies highly on cutting & agility. Trevor Laws was a pass-rushing DT; those (if needed) can be had in one of the later rounds. Jenkins proved his value & Patterson should come back strong.

This is far from a strong class DT wise and seeing as how our bigger needs lie w/ the three playing behind the front 4, unless that first rounder can field multiple DL positions & then some I say we leave him be. We are looking at possibly cutting Tapp whom is a bigger player than ALL of the reserves mentioned. If he goes we need to look at replacing his production against the run, pass and as a DE/rush DT option FIRST.

& I meant Laws’ role was very limited on this team as a 3rd down rush DT.. He wasn’t as important as Jenkins & Patterson of course; even Dixon before his injury.

Dixon tore his triceps, so no he's not coming off a Knee injury...

And no, if a top DL prospect drops expect the Eagles to take them. Babins like 33 and Coles like 32 and all we have behind them is Graham, it may be time to bring in a top prospect.

Picking a DT 15th overall

would be STUPID….no DT is worth the 15th overall pick. There is plenty of value in the 2nd round and plenty of guys will fall to us that are comparable and maybe even better than Still. These are the guys I think we target in the 2nd round: Cox, Worthy, Thompson, Reyes, and Poe.

I ultimately would like to see us do this if we’re gonna keep Desean:

Trade Down in 1st round and trade Asante
1) Hightower
2) Curry
2) Best WR: Randall, Sanu, Wright, Criner
3) BEST DT
3) Audie Cole/Bobby Wagner
3) Boykin
4) Ladarius Green/Joe Adams
4) Joe Adams/Ladarius Green

In any draft or just this one? And there are “guys” that could fall to us in every round that are comparable or maybe better than every player, that doesnt mean that if the person you like is there you don’t take him.

What did we get for trading down in the draft, we trade back only to get a 3rd rounder? Ouch!

ok, the giants suck.

yup me too

I can think of a few DT’s from the last 2 drafts I would ecstatically pick at 15.

by Shawsage on Feb 4, 2012 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

This draft

I’m only referring to this draft and the talent at DT….if you look at this draft there really isn’t a DT worth taking at 15 so why reach at a position we don’t necessary need to address? Makes absolutely no sense what so ever to draft a guy at 15 who will more than likely not be an impact player – especially when you have perfectly fine 2nd round prospect who will act as great role players.

by MJG123 on Feb 4, 2012 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

we trade back only to get a 3rd rounder? Ouch!

We would have to trade back to a spot that picks BEFORE Pittsburgh because there’s a good chance they pick up Hightower. That being said, a 3rd round is reasonable value for trading back say 5 spots from 15 to 20. Ouch? There’s some great talent in the 3rd round or we could package the two 3rds and get back in the 2nd. If you look at this draft..the 2nd and 3rds rounds are going to have great players available.

by MJG123 on Feb 4, 2012 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

But why Trade back 5 spots in the first place

With the new rookie wage scale the price tag isn’t going to be that much different from mid teens to twenty, who knows by April Hightower could have up’d his stock and be right in that range. To adress your other comment acquiring an extra 3rd wouldn’t be worth (to me) trading back specially 5 spots a pick or two maybe but not 5 picks might as well take Hightower at #15, get the player you want.

ok, the giants suck.

I don’t think there is any chance that Joe Adams is still on the board in the 4th round. Dude is gonna sky rocket up draft boards after the combine. I’ll say somebody ends up drafting him late 2nd to mid 3rd.

by Shawsage on Feb 4, 2012 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

this is on the condition of course that he doesn’t blow his 40 and does what most people expect him to do and be in the 4.4 – 4.5 range.

by Shawsage on Feb 4, 2012 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

I could see that happening

But, then again, people had Desean going in the 1st round, but a lot of teams passed on him (despite his talent) because of his size. Desean was considered to be a better prospect than Joe Adams. However, I could see Joe Adams going early 3rd. I guess 4th round for me was more wishful thinking/not out of the realm of possibility.

Or if Desean is gone...maybe this:

Trade Asante and Desean is gone

1) Floyd
2) Poe/Worthy/Thompson/Curry/Cox/Reyes
2) Poe/Worthy/Thompson/Curry/Cox/Reyes
3) Bobby Wagner
3) Boykin/Markelle Martin
4) Joe Adams/ L. Green
4) Joe Adams/ L. Green

Eagles will use one of there first 3 picks

On a DT given Laws departure and health questions around Dixon/Patterson. Have a better idea though what there other needs will be though including if they move Jackson and Samuel.

I’d be extremely angry if they took him AND didn’t address LB in free agency prior to this. If they did address LB then took him I’d be like meh. Ideally I’d like Kuechly in the 1st but if he’s gone then Quinton Coples, dude’s the next Peppers/JPP
