Brian Dawkins Will Be A Free Agent, Could Retire

Photo

Brian Dawkins will be an unrestricted free agent in less than two weeks, but he may just be hanging up his cleats for good. Speaking to reporters at the combine yesterday, Broncos GM John Elway says he hasn't from Dawkins since the season ended and is unsure of his plans.

"I have not had a chance to talk with Brian to see what his plans are, whether he'd like to come back or not," Elway said. "Not speaking for him, I know he's probably going through a tough time -- having been a football player -- how hard it is making that decision when you're getting close to the end of your career whether you want to continue to play or not."

Dawkins missed the end the Broncos season with a neck injury. In fact, neck injuries have cost him 10 games over the past two seasons. He's previously said that if he does decide to come back, it will only be for one more year and he'd just stay in Denver.

That said, all of us here in Philly would be happy to welcome him back whether he decides to hang em up or not. Brian Dawkins should retire as an Eagle, where he belongs.

He better be in Canton someday.

They don’t make safeties like that anymore.

They really don’t. In his prime, he was a safety with a high IQ that could lay out the wood, blitz, cover above average, great hands, force a fumble, diagnose a play, very versatile, a sure tackler (call me crazy but I would rank him as a top 5 tackling safety of all time), an amazing and vocal leader, and the list goes on. However the fact that cris carter isn’t in makes me think it’s possible he won’t be there. Although the whole cris carter thing is all politics.

Yeah

He’s def no lock to get in. Will probably be on the fringe. But he was still making an impact with the Broncos at 37 so that should help him. (He played in the Pro Bowl this year)

His playing days are LONG over

He would be great in the locker room though and would definitely not allow some of that poor ass tackling to go on too long..but he can’t play. Even in 09 he got really abused in coverage by Westbrook and Celek and at the time Westbrook was a bit past his prime as well

Man I just want this guy to retire as an Iggle...he's the soul of this team

It would be utterly amazing if he would join the coaching staff but hey, a guy can dream right?

why? he hit him in the stormach area, that should be showen how you legally hit a receiver over the middle (Looking at you Dunta)

by Anders Jensen on Feb 25, 2012 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Isn’t that considered a defenseless receiver now?

by TimmyGee on Feb 25, 2012 1:07 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Doesn't matter

A lot of people misunderstand the rules. This play is 100% legal (and awesome). You can’t hit a defenseless receiver in the head/neck area. You run right through his stomach, it’s absolutely fine. That’s the problem with what players are doing – they are ignoring safety (for themselves and the receivers) and just launching themselves. This isn’t actually Dawkins best hit, by far, but he does it legally and safely. Dawkins just flat out knows how to hit people and make it count.

Love that play, in the biggest game in recent Eagles history.

Can’t believe that was 7 years ago.

One of the greatest Eagles of all-time, he needs to retire an Eagle. And if I need to, I’ll walk to Canton when he’s inducted.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget the day we let him go. Everyone just seemed to have more emotion when he was around.

I was so sad when he left, and I really wish he would have stayed. But I understand why he left.

I hope he retires as an Eagle, and enters the HOF as an Eagle too.

Eagles will be 11-5 or 12-4 in 2012

he could play WILL for a year.

[in my imagination] — though JJ did work him out at LB towards the end of his career here

Eagles’ FO make the right call on not resigning him to the 2-year deal at the dollars he got from the Broncos. You won’t hear many people admit that but it is the truth.

I always thought Dawkins was a very good player but the one knock on him is that he disappeared in some of the Eagles’ biggest games in the playoffs. Kind of the same that Reggie had on him during his time here as an Eagle and a fair criticism. It was only in GB that White got rid of that criticism about not showing up in the playoffs.

Always will wonder what Hopkins would have been like during his tenure here if he hadn’t blown out his knee in ‘86. Still was a good player after that for several years with the Eagles but didn’t quite have the same raw speed burst or agility.

Regarding not resigning him, I understand that he was past his prime, but do you remember the who we had back in safety next to mikel the following year? Dawkins was at least adequate with the broncos his first year…better than his replacement.

But he struggled this year in general so basically the Broncos got 1 really good year of Dawkins.

Dawkins wasn’t worth the contract he got from them including $7.2M guaranteed and his salary this year and last. That’s not good value at all. People dump on this FO all the time about not resigning guys over 30 but they are right almost every single time on letting those guys go.

Look at Mikell last year. He was horrible in St. Louis. My bet is that he is out of the league after this next year. Maybe he hangs on for another year beyond next year as a backup because S right now is so thin across the league.

When Nnadmi was signed, I was enamored with the signing because the Eagles were paying top-dollar for a guy probably had already played his best football. Said I would rather seen them spend the large dollars on Johnathan Joseph and got shit on here for that comment. Joseph is a guy who is probably either just entering his prime or right at.

My bet is that we are going to find out that it wasn’t the scheme this year but simply that Nnadmi has slipped a bit & is longer the blanket CB he is getting paid to be by the Eagles. It doesn’t mean he can’t be a good CB but he is being paid to be an elite CB.

The ultimate football player........

Brian Dawkins is the ultimate football player. During the many many years that I’ve followed professional football, Dawk is one of those rare players who always gives his all no matter what. The HOF is full of football players whose careers included certain records for whatever position they played and they all had a love and dedication for the game. Reggie White, who was also an Eagle is one name that comes to mind. And so many others that can be named too. But Dawk is that special player who stands heads and tails above others who played his position. Dawk was determined to go all out for every down while he was on the field. There was no backing off or slacking off at any time….every down was important. There’s only one other player that I can think of who played with the intensity of Brain Dawkins. Ronnie Lott. I lived in the SF bay area for over 30 years, and even though I grew up in Philly, the 49ers were my second team. If I had to pick an all time NFL defensive squad, my two safeties would be Ronny Lott and Brian Dawkins. In my opinion, these two were the hardest hitting safeties to ever play the game. Both wanted to crush the opposition on every play. Both made a receiver or runningback think twice about catching a ball or running the ball within their area. And both made those bone crushing hits legally. Dawk is the man of his era and Ronny Lott was the man of his era. And both were dedicated to the game.
Come home Dawk……come home. Retire as an Eagle….we all know you’ll always be an Eagle forever. Come home Dawk…..come home. Let us say one last farewell to you….let us show our appreciation to you. Come home Dawk…..come home.
Goooooooooooooo Eagles……………………….

Of course he should retire an Eagle – he never should have been allowed to leave. Let’s retire him on the day when Reid, Roseman and Vick all are gone.
