The Linc - It's NFL Combine Eve

NFL.com news: Eagles prioritize need to evaluate health of prospects at combine
The Philadelphia Eagles will take note of the 40-yard dash times of the players on their draft board during the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. They'll file away the number of bench press repetitions as well as the results of all the other drills from those same players, as well. But when the team's front office descends upon Indianapolis for this week's combine, it will do its best not to let any testing cloud its ratings based off player's college game film.

Vision training seen as critical at NFL Combine
The draft prospects displaying their talents at the NFL scouting combine this week have worked on their sprint times and strength, their agility, and even their answers to interview questions.

Burke: Combine more flash than substance
The NFL Combine is more flash than substance, says Ron Burke, who will still watch even though non-contact drills paint an incomplete picture.

Vision Training to improve athletes response times?

Reading the article it is all a lot of rubbish

Next come Saccades, what Da Silva describes as visual push-ups

Nothing of the sort! Saccadic movement is the automatic tracking when something moves accross the field of view, for example buildings when you are looking out of a train window. Although there is some conscious control within this process it is mostly involuntary, so worthless to try and improve.

The challenge is trying to relocate where they left off as their eyes move, and processing what they see. It’s similar to the challenge of a running back finding a hole and reacting, or spotting an oncoming pass rusher, Da Silva said.

It would be more prudent to test a players field of vision for any particular defects and responses to stimuli that fixation. If they cannot see something in their peripheral vision they will not fixate on it full stop!

Outside, the players don glasses with LCD lenses that flash, occasionally obscuring their vision. They have to perform agility drills and make decisions – such as where to throw – while seeing less than usual. When they take the glasses off, it’s like a sprinter taking off a parachute and running at full speed, unencumbered and, they hope, with one more edge heading into the NFL.

This would be counter productive, if anything this will result in the athlete less efficiently processing what is happening in that field of view when it is no longer blocked, hence slowing reactions.

Andy has to get into DeSean’s head to see if he is holding back. If he has been afraid that he would be knocked out of the game before his big pay day, Andy can cure that with some guaranteed money. Maybe. There is no question that DeSean didn’t play this season with the same wild abandon that he previously did. He was always doubling back, looking for a safe lane with his returns. Much more than previous years. And even though his killer return against the Giants started with him dropping the ball and then dropping back, he used to bolt straight forward a lot more. Pure balls.

Maybe it was the concussion? He’s a very bright guy. Maybe he just doesn’t want to grow old crippled like Muhhomed Ali. I suppose there has to be a good dose of denial in any guy who decides to play pro-ball nowadays when you see the medical reports on the guys who have retired, the suicides, the brain-damage, etc.

My guess is that he’ll be fine when he gets some guaranteed money – no matter who it comes from. It’s funny what people will do for money. Escpecially someone who obviously loves the game like DeSean. And even if he gets the low end of what his salary range might be, he will be getting what any normal person would call crazy money.

Your board is where the problem lies Roseman…..you need to redeem yourself BADLY this year…. your last 2 years have been below average…..

Can you really judge a draft class as “below average” after just one year?

Liar liar ...

Roseman’s pants are on fire. How can that douche say they’re concerned about player longevity when they fucking drafted a 27 yr old player in the first round last year.

This front office is turning into a train wreck when it comes to drafting lately.

by Saidrick on Feb 21, 2012 12:45 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Longevity from a health perspective. They’ve had a number of early picks lost to injury. I’m not sure he actually means it, sounds like PR BS to me, but that’s what he meant.

by J.P.Melle on Feb 21, 2012 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think howie is full of shit. I think he complicates beyond necessity and the results are not looking good. Out of our first three picks last year, not one single pick played the entire season. Our draft from two years ago , is pretty much the same story.
So no, I don’t think he tries to purposely sabotage the draft , but damage is being done, repeatedly , nonetheless.

Jenkins wants to retire as an Eagle apparently.

Welcome back Cullen great news that Jenkins will remain in midnight green. He certainly helped the team where it matters most " with our Cap" by restructuring his contract. Already taking one for the team and this after a fantastic 1st season.
