Is Mike Vick a Super Bowl QB? Is Mike Kafka ready to be the primary backup? Should the team go after a QB in the upcoming draft? Here's the scoop.

Nick Foles or Kirk Cousins could be options for us.

Ryan Tannehill will most likely be gone by our first 2nd rd pick we could draft Nick Foles with one of our 2nd rd picks. Or draft Kirk Cousins in the 3rd.

Foles doesn’t fit the Reid mold at all. Cousins might, I’m honestly not fimiliar enough with the nuances of his game. Osewilier has the mobility and arm strength Reid seems to covet, but he doesn’t have that fast of a release.

I like Osweiler (sp-whatever)

more then either of them. Weeden looked GREAT during Senior Bowl practices so I wouldnt mind taking a flyer on him either. Yeah, he will be 29 but if he can play till he’s 36 (which isnt unreasonable for a QB) then thats 7 years of service for a mid round pick.

But is it more like 5 years of service, because he would’t be a starter as a rookie and possibly his second year as well?

I don’t see them drafting a qb this year. There is a huge gap from luck and rg3, to the rest. I think we will get a decent vetran FA or draft a qb next yr

by Eagles swag on Feb 2, 2012 10:16 AM EST via mobile reply actions

They definitely need someone that is capable of doing just enough to win. They don’t have to be great.

We just can’t count on Vick being healthy the whole year.

Like Tommy said old friend A.J Feeley will be available and we have worked out Trent Edwards a few times already. Most likely we will pick up a QB in FA but I would not be shocked to see us draft a QB.

Fan post idea

I don’t have enough time to research or write it, but someone should do a fan post on Peyton manning’s affect on the eagles qb situation. There are a lot of places that have young qb’s that could make a play for manning if he is available. If said team shopped their young former starter turned backup cheap, would you take it? If the jets got manning, would you give a 3rd for Sanchez? If the titans got manning, should the eagles trade for locker? At what cost? Could be an interesting assessment of a few different scenarios

by IwearNumber20 on Feb 2, 2012 10:33 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Well I would kind of doubt

that any team would give up on young QB they like even if they get Manning. I DEFINITELY do NOT want Sanchez for anything. Obviously, Locker would be real nice, but no way Titans ship him out even if they get Manning. Only one I can see is if the Dolphins get Manning and let Henne walk. I’ve always liked Henne and would love him as a back up here. Plus they could still keep Moore as a back up. Cause whoever gets Manning, should DEFINITELY have a legitimate back up QB

If Kafka isnt ready to be #2 by now

What’s his value? Super clipboard holder? We’ve avoided disaster at QB by having the next guy ready, so if we can trade up to get Tannehill with our 2nd pick it should be a no-brainer.

by Mc5 on Feb 2, 2012 10:58 AM EST reply actions

Kafka was a project when he was drafted

He showed signs of promise. But I think he only started one year at Northwestern. So coming out he was raw. Then this past season with no offseason that didn’t help him at all either.

Give the guy a chance to come around. He doesn’t have much starting experience, but we’ve see what Marty can do with QB’s.

by slandog on Feb 2, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

1. Vick is capable, is the coaching staff though?
2. No, Kafka is lucky to be the #2. He has not looked good.
3. Unless there is a chance to get one of the top 3 QBs then no. Eagles really cant develop QBs to begin with

by Easedel on Feb 2, 2012 11:30 AM EST reply actions

I was writing out a reply to the main story

then I read what you wrote and it’s essentially the same thing. However, I wonder if Vick is capable of going all the way to the superbowl. His injury concerns are real. He cannot stay healthy. Missing 2-3 games a year is not an option unless we go 14-2 and he’s back for the superbowl. Need to start thinking long term but as you #3 point out, we shouldn’t jump in unless we could get RG3

You can't count Young in this

He was with the team one season with no offseason. Besides Young is a terrible QB to begin with. He’s also very fragile in the head……I think the QB position is too much for him.

Vick suddenly improving his pre-snap reads?

Come-on Tommy. He’s been in the NFL for over a decade now. If he isn’t good at that by now, he never will be.

by MG77 on Feb 2, 2012 11:48 AM EST reply actions

Last year the entire pre-snap job changed for Vick. He even complained about training camp being harder than ever now that he has to help with blocking assignments. The extra responsibility may make him slower, or it may help him anticipate, but this is definitely not how he has worked for most of his career.

The knock as a falcon was that he couldnt anticipate receivers, and had to hit still targets because he didnt know the playbook or the routes. Now that he studies the routes and is learning defenses, he may finally be able to get the ball out more quickly. I hope the offseason gives him a chance to learn this better, because last season didnt seem to show quick decisions all the time.

by ATLeagle on Feb 2, 2012 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

Vick

Isn’t going to start 15 or 16 games at this point though. At best, you get 13 or 14 starts out of him at a high-level and he isn’t so beat up by the time the playoffs start that he is ineffective.

People keep hammering the defense/Castillo but Vick’s inability to stay healthy is the problem issue with this team making a legit SB run next year.

by MG77 on Feb 2, 2012 11:51 AM EST reply actions

Yup, Love his dynamic ability but would prefer a stable consistent QB

They will make one last run with Vick and Reid next year. If they don’t make a deep playoff run, both are done here.

by MG77 on Feb 2, 2012 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

I figure pretty much the same. I give Vick 2 years here if no SB appearance then he’s out. Reid is out if we don’t reach the NFC championship game. Next coach will use vick 1 year while grooming his QB. A guy can dream…

by ATLeagle on Feb 2, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Will the o line EVER take any of the blame? Early in the year Vick had free rushers in his face constantly. Kelce gave up tons of pressure up the middle. Yes he held the ball long sometimes, but others he was hit instantly. Can’t stay healthy when you’re constantly getting crushed.

by Clint Eastwood on Feb 2, 2012 3:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Needs to cut down the turnovers

He had 14 INTs and 7 fumbles in just 13 games this year. Now granted not all of those INTs are his fault but even if he threw 9-10 that were that is still well over a turnover a game.

Given that turnover differential is the single most important stat in NFL (in terms of correlation to winning pct), Vick can’t be averaging more than well a turnover a game himself.

Even a team with a great defense would be hard pressed to keep teams off the board with the amount of takeaways the Eagles’ offense had this year.

by MG77 on Feb 2, 2012 11:57 AM EST reply actions

It started earlier than that

If you count the playoff game in 2010, Vick threw 7 interceptions. They all came in the last 6 games. I think that he took the league by surprise when he came back, and it took a while for defensive coordinators to come up with schemes that worked. I still say that he takes too many deep drops.

I think that we need to start thinking about our quarterback of the future sooner rather than later. The problem is that since Reid is on the hot seat he probably is thinking in terms of short term success. I guess if the Eagles lay another egg next season it would be a moot point because Reid and Vick could both be gone.

Go Eagles!

by MRPH on Feb 2, 2012 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Everyone looks at the end of 2010/early 2011. What about later on after the line stabilized? When receivers started catching balls? He improved in the turnover department at the end of this year, and I hope he continues that trend next year..

Curious to see how they sign a veteran FA

Lawlor right that they will likely sign a veteran FA to backup Vick again. Kafka isn’t the answer & you don’t draft a rookie to be your backup on a team that wants to make a deep playoff run.

by MG77 on Feb 2, 2012 11:59 AM EST reply actions

Kafka isn’t the answer

And how do you know this? This will be his 3rd yr in theleague. He could be a very good #2.Too early to write him off. Just like it is too early to write off:
-Graham
-Allen
-Matthews
-Jarrett
-Marsh
-Even Coleman…. but he is a stretch for my list. Has gotten better each yr so we will see.

by VRFC8 on Feb 2, 2012 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Don't really need to read Lawlor to know we aren't set at QB

I’d take Foles or Cousins or Jason Campbell though.

Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"

by NJEagle on Feb 2, 2012 12:08 PM EST reply actions

Like Campbell

He could like the Eagles because he’ll be in a good system, Vick will likely miss a few games, and he can show he’s a capable starter.

was with having a rookie center ( and not a top prospect type center either ) in Kelce.

Actually not really. A couple of fumbles were more the center’s fault and Vick had to dive on them.

Vick can definitely lead teh Ealges to a title. However, he has to change his mentality.

He has the potential to be the difference and single handedly change everything. However, that gets him in trouble.

He needs to stop trying to break the game open and instead go for the easy plays.

Honestly, I think an offseason will help him a lot with Andy Reid and its clear that Vick genuinely cares and will do anything he can to win.

by VBG on Feb 2, 2012 1:59 PM EST reply actions

So do you have a prediction?

Will Vick play like he did up to the Chicago game in 2010, or like he has since then?

I think it will be mostly not good enough, occasionally brilliant.

by waterfield on Feb 2, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on Receivers

I think the receivers were surprisingly mediocre this year.

Maclin had a few huge drops and seemed like he wasn’t himself especially at the start of the the year. Then he had some injuries.

D-Jax was here and there.

Steve Smith screwed the Eagles every time Vick passed to him. I feel like Vick threw 3 interceptions in his direction for the 11 completions…

The team has no red zone target.

You could argue, Avant was the best receiver overall this year.

Towards the end of the season, I loved how Vick for the first time really started using Celek. It really helped the offense out.

by EaglesandRavensFan on Feb 2, 2012 5:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

This is my biggest complaint about our receivers
The team has no red zone target.

We have lots of speed which is great between the 20’s, but not so much in the red zone. If we bring in another receiver I hope that it is not one of those “field stretchers”. We have those. We need a physical receiver that is effective in the red zone.

Go Eagles!

by MRPH on Feb 3, 2012 7:06 AM EST up reply actions

Unless Vick fundamentally changes who he is as a QB...

He’s not going to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl. I’m still waiting for Vick to show me that he’s got what it takes to be a WINNER.

Draft Geno Smith in 2013 to be the future franchise QB. That is all.

Why would we get another project when we already have one we’ve put a year into. And for those of you hating on Kafka, he did a damn good job in the Atlanta day, considering the shortened off season, lack of reps, and lack of experience. He’s no Kevin Kolb, but I thought he did what most project QB/rookie could do in that situation.
