Show Me the Money: Paying DeSean Jackson
[Note by JasonB, 02/19/12 4:33 PM EST ] An argument in favor of bringing back DeSean Jackson from Patrick Wall.
As the NFL world descends on Indianapolis for the second time in less than a month, the focus will be on the future. Prospective rookies attending the Combine shuffle in to be poked and prodded, measured and tested, interviewed and studied. But the Combine is also a place for the sport’s power players to begin wheeling and dealing.
Eagles’ GM Howie Roseman will be hearing plenty about his disgruntled star wideout DeSean Jackson. Hopefully these conversations tell him what I suspect he already knows: if winning the Super Bowl next year is really, truly, the goal, the Eagles must keep him.
Granted, this is easier said than done. Jackson, and agent Drew Rosenhaus (the man responsible for this infamous moment in Philly sports history), are asking for the type of money the Jets inexplicably gave Santonio Holmes, or around $10 million per year.
Let’s be clear: neither Jackson nor Holmes are worth that type of money. But they are similar players, and both are crucial to what their respective offenses do. When Jackson is on the field, defenses have to account for his blazing deep speed. And when he has the ball in his hands, he can take it the distance at any time. This has likely been Rosenhaus’ mantra through the negotiation process.
For the Eagles, the situation looks less rosy. After holding out during the first part of training camp, Jackson had his worst year as a pro, netting 58 catches for 916 yards and four touchdowns. While these numbers aren’t terrible, the team expects better. Despite being a threat as a punt return and runner—as a rookie he was the first player to be named the starter at two positions in the Pro Bowl—he was a virtual non-factor as a punt returner last season.

DeSean Jackson had a down year as a punt returner.
Worse than his production was his attitude. Jackson seemed to be pouting for the majority of the season, and was deactivated against the Cardinals for missing a team meeting. He was also benched against the Patriots for playing soft, dropping easy touchdowns that would’ve meant he’d take big hits.
Several news outlets have reported recently that Jackson is likely to be given the franchise tag as early as next week. This would lock him up for another year and pay him the average of the top five receivers in the game, which equals around $10 million. Jackson has said he is fine with this—proof, in this writer’s opinion, that it’s all about the Benjamins, baby.
Franchising DeSean also gives the team a few options: they can keep him for a year and potentially franchise him one more time after next season, negotiate a long-term deal, or trade him.
At this point, many fans seem ready to part with DeSean, but I’m not so sure. Money seems to be his biggest motivator. While it’s fair to wonder if he’ll pull an Albert Haynesworth and quit on the team once he gets paid, he’s worth too much to the team to let go.
Yes, there are some sexy free agent names out there, including Dwayne Bowe, Marcus Colston and Vincent Jackson, but neither have the skill set of a player like Jackson. Defenses fear Jackson, and shutting him down only means more opportunities for guys like Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Brent Celek and the always dangerous LeSean “Shady” McCoy.
With head coach Andy Reid on the hot seat, continuity is key for the 2012 Eagles. It’s why the team brought back defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, and it’s why QB Michael Vick will still be leading the team. Jackson is one of Vick’s favorite weapons, and the two have an adorable “big bro/little bro” dynamic that I think is a positive for Jackson’s maturity (yeah, you read that right).
So what’s he worth? Definitely not the $10 million per year he wants. But DeSean may have a hard time turning down $6 or $7 million a year with incentives and a healthy signing bonus. Overpaying for superstars isn’t necessarily a bad thing. A happy DeSean Jackson is a bonus for the team, and a productive DeSean Jackson is a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Jackson is a deadly deep threat. But is only effective in two ways…short cross and the deep ball. Maclin can stretch the field and run all of the routes. Getting a big guy and having Maclin we could do great things.
Eagles go 8-8 or 9-7 in 2012/2013 season. 2/17/12
No way Eagles draft a LB in the first round 2012.
We will see if Spags was in the right place at the right time in the Gmens SB run. Or was that the fluke year and he really is just mediocre.

I agree with this actually.
However there’s no doubt that if we kept Jackson we’d retain the offenses explosiveness but that’s only if Desean doesn’t pussy out of catches that require him to get hit.

I think Desean has kind of held Jeremy back in the sense
that Maclin has had to be a possession receiver and not the number one. I think Maclin is a much better player. He has great speed, great hands (ATL game withstanding), and is a pretty smart and tough guy. I’m happy to have DJax but I’m proud to have Jeremy if that makes sense.
Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"
Seriously, I like Maclin...
…but to blame Desean for holding him back when Maclin still has yet to get 1,000 yards receiving while Desean gets the oppositions best corner (most times) and the attention of the secondary is ridiculous.
Maclin is a very good receiver and I, too, am glad we have him. However, to this point in his career, he has only been slightly better than Reggie Brown…statistically, that is. Hell, even Kevin Curtis had 1,000 yards receiving! And you can’t say it is because of targets as he will ALWAYS be the leader in targets for this team.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
and people rip on Jackson for his drops which certainly hurt the team but not nearly to the extent of Maclin’s 3 blown game-winning drives.
Everyone keeps going back to that
But look at their overall careers. Maclin has been much better at every thing WR wise. He overall has much better hands, runs better routes, better blocking for the RB’s, isn’t a immature pussy, etc.
Calling him out for the 3 drops is getting old and that argument has run it’s course. Yes it killed us in those games but look back at the games, I’m sure there are a lot of plays left on the field. Those drops are remembered because of the time they took place.
Overall I’d take one Maclin over two Jackson’s on this team. He’s a much more complete player.
I'm not saying he's the sole reason but Maclin runs intermediate routes
because he’s the possession guy so he doesn’t get as much YAC
Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"
Chicken/Egg
But as the “possesion guy” with one-on-one coverage against the team’s Number 2 corner, he should be dominating games, no? He should be putting up Anquan Boldin numbers! Yet, he still has not even got a 1K yard receiving season.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
we would have this year
had he not been injured for a bunch of games.
Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."

the funny thing is, people rip Jackson for being “injury prone” when he’s only missed like 3 or 4 games in FOUR seasons (ignoring the game he was benched), whereas Maclin consistently misses a few games each season.
That’s because Jackson’s missed those games despite avoiding virtually all contact, while Maclin’s been playing the much tougher possession role and taking serious hits. Put Jackson in Maclin’s role and he’s probably ended his career by now.
I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.

Were all of Maclin’s injuries due to big hits that Jackson avoids? Otherwise the argument is made up. I recall two of Maclin’s nagging injuries were a hamstring and a weird foot problem called planticilular felinigititis (sp?). Not the kinds of injuries that typically come from big hits.
Fans love to say Jackson is the inferior WR, he’s is a one trick pony who avoids all contact and gives minimal effort… yet he still racks up more yards than Maclin every season.
Remember this? Maclin takes a helmet to helmet hit from Dunta Robinson, stays in the game. Desean Jackson takes a helmet to helmet hit from Dunta Robinson, gets a concussion, and hasn’t been the same since. My point is that Maclin can take those kind of hits, but Desean can’t.
I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.
So you’re arguing the two hits were exactly the same because they were delivered by the same player, and therefore Maclin must be tougher because he was hurt less? Drastic oversimplification… You pick two plays to compare the two players and overlook the entire 3-4 years they’ve played in the NFL. Desean suffering a concussion on an illegal hit does not make him injury prone. And Maclin surviving one bad hit and then missing games from tendon problems doesn’t make him tougher than the average NFL player.
Players far tougher than Maclin and Jackson suffer concussions every week in the NFL.
Stewart Bradley runs into his own teammate, gets a concussion. Jason Avant delivers a block, gets a concussion. Kevin Kolb’s helmet hits the turf hard on a sack, gets a concussion. Michael Vick gets thrown into the leg of his lineman, gets a concussion. Brian Westbrook gets sneezed on, gets a concussion. Asante Samuel and Rieley Cooper suffer a concussion on an unspecified play… etc…
The difference???
Maclin takes a helmet to helmet hit from Dunta Robinson, stays in the game. Desean Jackson takes a helmet to helmet hit from Dunta Robinson, gets a concussion, and hasn’t been the same since.
Maclin’s contract – 5 years – 15 Mil; 5 Mil Signing bonus.
Desean’s contract – 4 years – 3 Mil; 1.3 Mil Signing Bonus.
One player already has a contract that says if he stops playing at the end of it, he and his family never have a financial worry in the world. The other, despite outperforming the first player, has a contract that makes it seem like he has barely produced. Hell, Riley Cooper’s contract is 4 years and 2 Mil! You telling me Desean is only worth 1 Mil more than Riley and 12 Mil less than Maclin???
Put ALL things into consideration.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
I'd say DeSean is probably worth about the same as Maclin
But there’s no way in hell he settles for the $3-4mil/year contract we’ve got Jeremy signed to.
What happens if we give DJax a 5 year, $50mil contract and Maclin outplays him the next two seasons? Are we then expected to pay the same money to him when his contract runs out at the end of 2013?
I don’t think anybody’s saying that DeSean is not worth more than he has been getting so far, but overpaying for him could have further reaching consequences than just the money that we have to spend on him.
Maclin's due for a pay raise soon.

Why ignore the game he was benched
He was benched because he was acting like an ass. That all goes into the equation. He’s a poor team guy. Sure up until this year he was great, I agree 100%. But the one year he faces adversity this is how he acts, like a 4th grader. Come on man, that’s when he should be a man and act/play like one.
I'm not ignoring it...
…Im only pointing it out which is actually the opposite of ignoring it.
The one year he faces adversity happens to potentially affect the REST OF HIS CAREER/LIFE! If he takes another concussion without a long term deal, what happens? If he tears an ACL without a long term deal, what happens?? You want him to play with reckless abandon…PAY HIM. THEN, if he doesn’t, you have a valid argument.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
The post I was responding to was this:
[Maclin] would have [reached 1000 yards] this year had he not been injured for a bunch of games.
So the response was about injuries only. I was complaining about the double standard among the fans that give Maclin bonus yards for the games he missed but label Desean injury prone (and thus a less valuable player) for the games he missed.
He should be putting up Anquan Boldin numbers!
He did…
2011 Boldin: 57 catches, 887 yards, 3 TDs (missed 2 games)
2011 Maclin: 63 catches, 859 yards, 5 TDs (missed 3 games)
And you’re really only technically right about “not a single 1k yards season.” He missed it in ‘10 by all of 36 yards and he would have had it in ’11 if he didn’t miss three games.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
"WHY IS THIS PINK-HAIRED BITCH A CAR?!"
The Boldin comparison...
…was to when Boldin was in Arizona and Fitzgerald was taking the attention of the defense…
Also, “technically right” is still right, right? lol
In all seriousness though, you can’t give him a pass for injuries by pointing out that he missed three games, but hold injury against Desean. (Not saying you as in IMP, moreso as a fanbase)
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
I do understand the Boldin comparison, but it’s not fair to try and do a 1 to 1 matchup between Boldin in AZ and Maclin here, because Jackson does not command the same attention that Larry Fitzgerald does. There could be a big difference if we had Fitz lined up opposite Maclin instead of Jackson.
That being said, I do agree with you that Maclin isn’t absolutely better than Jackson. And while he might see more deep targets and more targets in general, I don’t know that he would suddenly appear to be a ‘legitimate number 1’ if Jackson were to leave. It could happen, but what he’s shown so far has not proved that it will definitely happen.
by footballisgod on Feb 19, 2012 7:22 PM EST up reply actions
this
you’re comparing the Desean to a top 3 WR. Maclin doesn’t get half the benefits he would on the other side of Fitz.
Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"
Im not comparing...
…Desean to a top 3 WR…I comparing the EFFECT he has on the defense to that of a top 3 WR. Tell me what attention he doesn’t get that Fitz does/did.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
What attention does Fitz generate that Desean doesn't?
He commands the defense’s number 1 corner a majority of the time.
He forces the safeties to play deeper than normal.
That means Maclin gets the team’s number 2 corner and no safety help in the middle of the field on short and intermediate routes.
What more could Jackson do that Fitz did for Boldin?
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
A defense designs it’s coverage to take the ball away from Fitzgerald. They design their coverage to take the deep ball away from Jackson. Safeties play deep against Jackson. They can’t just play deep against Fitz. They roll to his side, underneath zones are going to have a emphasis towards Fitzgerald’s side. Jackson absolutely changes the defense, but he doesn’t change it as much as a player like Fitzgerald would.
by footballisgod on Feb 20, 2012 1:46 PM EST up reply actions
Sorry...
But your argument actually supports my stance better than yours. If all that teams try to do is take the deep ball away from Desean and they do this by taking the safety 7-12 yards deeper in the secondary, you actually make the intermediate routs across the middle easier for the wideout on the other side. Since you stated that sometimes safeties are in underneath zones against Fitz because they have to take away the whole field, that means they are clogging up the underneath routes for other receivers, including the tight end.
With Desean, you know that the safety over the top will start 15-20 yards off the LOS and backpedal at the snap. Knowing that allows you to DESIGN plays for the space vacated underneath. Not knowing that with Fitzgerald means less design presnap.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
I didn’t mean the safeties would have underneath zones directed that direction, I meant the underneath zones in general would be rolling that way – the LBs and NBs, as well as safetys. And opening up the middle of the field can actually be a lot more helpful for the backs and tight ends, and it’s part of the reason why Celek was able to go on a tear in the 2nd part of the season, and why it’s also important to get him involved. For Jackson, mainly the only advantage is that the safety will line up deeper and Jackson is getting the top cornerback, if the defense plays that way. Fitzgerald is getting the majority of the back 7 designed to stop him. Not in nearly the same way that Jackson is. And, you’re also not nearly as worried about Jackson running a crossing route as you would be Fitzgerald. So Fitzy running across the middle of the field is going to create a lot more worry than Jackson doing it would – mainly because you rarely see Jackson doing it.
I would actually argue that having Maclin and Jackson together is what makes the offense truly effective. They are both deep threats – obviously Maclin isn’t the deep threat Jackson is, but he’s still fast and can burn corners who don’t prepare – and they both combined really open up the middle of the field. Celek and Avant both exploit that well, and it led to some of the bigger plays that stick in my mind from this past season.

We certainly agree here:

Somehow, me arguing that it is stupid to just Let Desean Walk, as voted for by 8% of the voters, has turned into me not liking Maclin. I love Maclin in our offense. Personally, I think the effect that Desean has on our offense is more across the board, but Maclin is a really good receiver in his own right, and would probably surpass 1100 yards receiving pretty easily if he were the primary target.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???

No doubt that Jeremy is our #1, outside of Avant he's the only guy that can run every route we throw out there.
Not only that but I feel that last season teams keyed onto him and he still had a good year.

I don’t think he’ll be another Albert Haynesworth because he loves the limelight too much. While there is certainly a risk, I don’t think you can realistically say your goal is to win with Super Bowl and then let the most feared deep threat in the game just walk for nothing.

He’s not the most feared deep threat anymore. Mike Wallace is, and if he keeps playing like he has been he won’t eve be top 5. He’s easy to jam at the line and has bad hands, he’s not as hard to defend as people think he is.

Poll needs the option of franchise him and see how he does when he’s not pissed about being underpaid.
If we franchise him, I want to see him elevate his game before we lock him up long term.
AR should have to wear a Flava Flav necklace until he learns how to manage a clock.
I am the proud target of temper tantrums.
But, if we franchise him...
…he’s no longer underpaid. If we tag him and don’t extend him, he will make about 9.4 million which, in just one year, is more than triple what he made in his previous 4.

He has no incentive to elevate his game because even if he doesn’t get a long term deal, he is getting paid like a Top 5 receiver regardless.

Exactly, the franchise tag only pays once, if he wants that money long term, he needs to get comfortably over 1,000 and put up double digit TDs.

So it sounds like the Franchise Tag...
…is a potential Win-win for Desean, then. Get paid in the interim. Perform like he feels he can…get paid in the future too.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???

The upside: he busts ass all year and takes his game to the next level. We sign him to a long term deal.
The downside: he half-asses it this year and doesn’t make the leap to the next level. He never sees anything close to that kind of money again, and we won’t be taking a unnecessary cap hit for the next 3-5 years.
AR should have to wear a Flava Flav necklace until he learns how to manage a clock.
I am the proud target of temper tantrums.
I get your point...
…but if you consider this a year in which he half assed it, then even with the dropoff in production from years’ past, he is still worth it because of what he does to defenses.
Look, I’m a Desean fan. However, I am not saying he deserves 10 mil a year. There is, however, middle ground…but I think due to the mishandling of this situation, the Eagles are going to have to give a little bit more than they would normally to make up for it.

Also...
…they can’t “just as easily” sign someone else in free agency. There are going to be multiple teams willing to pay the quotes of this crop of free agent wideouts (if they make it to FA)…however, they might not be places that are attractive to them for many reasons. Colston will probably prefer turf…Jackson might prefer to stay in warm weather, etc. etc. However, if you trade with a team, none of that matters…

If a team is willing to allocate a $10 million a year to a WR (DeSean’s apparent asking price), I think they could get pretty much any WR in FA since that’s an above market rate for all those WRs.

So....
…you think that if Chad Pennington came back (again, lol) to the Dolphins, and the Dolphins were willing to pay Desean 10 million, he would go play for them? Knowing that the QB has a jello arm? I say, no way he would…which means, there are other factors to consider when evaluating one location vs. another than just money. Trust me, Desean saw how ineffective his game is when the QB can’t get the ball downfield when VY was at QB. He’ll never voluntarily go back to that again.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
I was talking about all the other free agent WRs, but it doesn't really matter
I see you’re point, that money isn’t everything, but I think if a player has 2 offers; 1 from a good team and a market rate contract, and 1 from a bad team with an above market contract, he will take the money. Obviously that is reliant on how much over market rate the contract is vs. how miserable he will be in the adverse situation.
Since I don’t think any other WR on the market will sniff $10 million a year, if they were to get an offer that high, they would jump at it, even if it came from the Browns.

You might not be considering the entire picture...
There is a drawback to the “franchise/trade” option – if he’s tagged, once he chooses to sign the tender the Eagles are on the hook for that $$$. That hurts and probably kills the possibility of signing VJ, Bowe or Colston. I love DJ, but all 3 of those guys would likely be far better red-zone options than Jackson is.
I love Desean, but the “stretches the field” argument doesn’t mean crap in the red zone. I want a championship, and to win one I think we need more than an occasional home-run hitter. If the Eagles tag DJ, then IMHO they really need to also go after a FA LB to keep someone like Floyd a potential option in the first round.
Anyway, back to the point- the downside to “franchise/trade” is loss of flexibility due to cap concerns until he is actually traded. Going that route also has a price….
Okay...so he doesn't help as much in the red zone.
Point conceded. However, you have to get DOWN TO THE REDZONE, which is something he helps with every snap. Once down there, the other players, most notably everyone’s apparently oh-so-dependable Maclin should be able to get the ball in the endzone, right? Or at least Celek can win some one-on-one battles? What about McCoy…a dual threat to get in the end zone? Well, guess what, these players also struggle to get the ball in the end zone. I didn’t hear any clamoring when Celek was looking for his money.

I think...
We tag desean. He plays lights out to start the season and we sign him to a long term deal. Right now he is all about the money, but in performing to get that money I think he’ll remember what it was like when he was on top of the WR world and being the threat we all knew he was. Leading him to put more effort into his craft(route running etc). I don’t think we are all of a sudden going to see a DeSean that will run into contact etc but he will be more willing to fight for a few extra yards etc.
1200+ yard, 8+ TD season for DeSean
Oh to have the power over my wife like my brother does his.
His sons names: Iverson and Avant
Yes, we are a philly everything family.
It all comes down to money
If he still wants a Santonio Holmes contract then show him the door. If he gets his head out of his ass and accepts a market rate contract, then keep him.
I think the real problem is that Drew thinks he can land another Santonio Holmes contract even though its pretty clear neither DeSean nor Santonio are worth that much.

A third option
(not fourth, because letting him walk isn’t really an option)
Stevie Johnson has a similar skill set to DeSean Jackson, although obviously not as fast and not a punt returner. But he still has the ability to stretch the defense that would be vital to our offense. I would franchise and trade DeSean only if I could sign Stevie Johnson away from the Bills. It’s been said that his contract with the Bills will help set the value on DeSean’s contract. But he has to sign with the Bills first. I say forget that, set DeSean’s value by signing Johnson here, and let another team pay Jackson what he wants. Obviously, this is a really unlikely scenario, and if it did actually happen would be a serious coup by the front office. But, that would be my preferred situation.
this
is fucking stupid. he fucking quit on us this year and played like a scared little bitch. i dont want him on my favorite team. please for the love of god trade this cancerous tumor!

There are not pennies they are playing for, people. They have a chance to attain wealth that only 5-10% of the people IN THE ENTIRE WORLD will ever have a chance at. Tell me you would risk injury with that over your head.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
Fuck that. Where did this bullshit come from that it’s acceptable for players in contract years to puss out on their teams? Did Evan Mathis or Derek Landri decide to half ass it, know that if they went all out and got injured, they’d be out of the game with no money? No, they worked their asses off and have earned much bigger contracts. Most players see contract years as a way to showcase their abilities and make some series money. It’s only mentally weak players who decide to pack it in like Desean did. Guys who don’t care about competing and winning. Guys who are ok with failure as long as they get a paycheck. And guys like that are not what you need if you want to win a super bowl.

amen! qwest, dont give me that bullshit about he is trying to protect his family. this guy just made $808k. if that isnt enough for your family to feel comfortable, you are doing something wrong.
even before the start of this season he was a feast or famine receiver. not a #1 by any means. you never know if hes going to show up! its not acceptable to quit on a team because your not getting paid as much as you think you should be. stop making excuses for him!!!
Luke Kuechly is a NYG fan and lives with his mother phyllis. Vontaze Burfict enjoys eating glue, rock salt and lead paint chips. WE.ARE.FUCKED.
It's not a question whether how much he made is a lot...
Clearly, $808,000 for half a year of “work” is a ton of money. That’s not a question. What it is about is that in terms of the market value for his profession and the performance put forth IN that profession, he is “worth” much more than that. Stop trying to turn my statements into me saying 808K is not a lot of money. But in a capitalistic society, you are worth whatever someone will pay you.
And the real hypocritical part of this is that if it were any of us in his shoes, making between 1/6th and 1/10th of what we were worth and still risking our careers on it, we would be handling it the same way.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
That's not exactly fair
You can’t make that assumption about every body. I know for a fact that if I were in the NFL and playing for the veteran minimum I would give it my all on every play, no matter what. I would just be there for the game of football, not for the money. I do have faith that I have other talents, so I wouldn’t be lost without football, but even minimum for rookies is enough to get a person by for awhile if you’re not stupid with your money. A lot of people would have done what DeSean did, but not everyone (and I’m not saying that protecting himself is a bad thing).
by footballisgod on Feb 20, 2012 6:45 PM EST up reply actions
Okay...
…now we are splitting hairs. So, I’ll amend my statement to “many people would handle it the same way.”
However, in that, you have to admit that you are basing your assertion that you “know for a fact” that you would give it your all on every play no matter what, on pure conjecture, speculation, and hypotheticals. The only way “to know for a fact” is if it IS a fact. Since it isn’t, the best you can say is ‘I would like to think that if I were in his shoes, I would have given it all on every play, no matter what.’
There are some things that apply to how he handled the situation that can be attributed to basic human nature. 1. It is in our BHN to protect ourselves, as best as possible, from danger. 2. It is in our BHN to do everything possible to provide for ourselves and those that we love. Those things have shaped how he handled the situation and are the reason why I think many people would handle this situation very similar, if not exactly the same.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
This is the NFL
If DeSean wanted to avoid injury he wouldn’t have signed on the dotted line. The nature of the game is taking big hits, and I’m sorry but if you don’t have the capacity to do that then you’re out of town. The reason these guys get paid so much money is because of the finesse involved in football along with the risk of severe injury. Guess what, DeSean isn’t forced to play in the NFL, he could have graduated from Cal with whatever degree he got and went to get a safe, normal job. The nature of the NFL is in taking hits. End of story.
Just another fan, mad because they make millions.
That’s what you guys come off as.
Guess what…What Desean is doing is no different from Doctors and Lawyers and other professions that make more than Joe Public think they should based off of the work they do. This is America…where I am worth whatever someone will pay me. If my skillset dictates that is 5.00/hr then that’s nobody’s fault but mine. Likewise, if my skillset dictates I’m worth 6Mil/year, that is also nobody’s fault but mine.
You guys sound like you are mad that they are rich. Sorry…just calling it the way it looks.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
Personally, I couldn't give a shit what Desean makes
The reason I say he’s not worth 10M is because in a salary cap world, that’s 10M that can’t be used on a starting caliber LB or some other player that would help the Eagles. Nice job on the baseless assertion though.
Fact is, when the going got tough, Desean quit. That’s not the type of player that wins championships.

You really are mad, huh? Let’s see…you are mad about a player’s contract that has absolutely ZERO to do with you, personally…but I am the one with a dick in my mouth? Well, if I have Desean’s in mine, you have Jeffrey Lurie’s in yours.
It’s not a bitch way to play it…hell, it’s not even playing it. THIS IS HOW AMERICA WORKS. Problem is, you can’t separate logic and emotion so you sit there getting your little panties all in a bunch.
Look, I don’t support underachieving at all. I’ve said in here multiple times that I did not like how he performed last year. The difference between you and I is that I realize that the organization had something to do with that performance last year. Would it have been great if he came into camp on time, didn’t make any noise about his contract, and went 110% on every snap of every game? ABSOLUTELY. He handled that terribly and will find out that it might have been better to do it another way. However, he did his best to juggle the best interests of his team by being here and his own personal best interests by not being hurt. He wouldn’t have had to worry about the last one if he had been compensated at a level commensurate to hes past performance.
Stop crucifying millionaires to benefit billionaires.
P.S. I’m a little disturbed that you knew the verb form of fellatio.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
Once again...we agree he is not worth 10 million.
Search through my posts…not just in here but my entire history, and find one where I even implied that the Eagles should give him 10 Mil. Herein lies the difference in your perspective and mine:
1. I realize that this is a negotiation. It’s said that if both sides don’t leave the bargaining table a little bit mad, someone got screwed. Rosenhaus HAS to set the bar at 10 Mil. And the Eagles HAVE to not pay that much. However, if Rosenhaus came in at 6 Mil initially, you’d be surprised to see that the Eagles probably wouldn’t pay THAT amount either. So it’s the typical rule of a good negotiator, something that everyone will admit Drew is regardless of your feelings about him. If you want 8 Mil, you better start at 10. If you start at 8, you’ll end at 6.
2. Unlike you, I (correctly) assign part of the blame to the organization. Sure, they couldn’t handle it last year (and I think they wanted to) because of the loophole in the cap. But as soon as that cleared, they should have locked him up long term. The Eagles’ FO LET it get here and that was a colossal mistake, especially given how much was riding on this season. The Steve Smith and Ronnie Brown signings were good moves…but not if you were going to handle one of your star players this way.
Try to look at it from Desean’s perspective, for once. Here he is, changing the complexion of games, making pro bowls, and catching touchdowns. He looks around the lockerroom and he sees everyone else at that level has gotten paid…Vick, Maclin, Celek, Peters, Samuel, Patterson, Cole, and Herremans. He figures, of course they will take care of me like they should. He continues to look around and see that in addition to the Pro Bowl caliber players, the following names have also gotten their paydays…Graham, Justice, Avant, and Parker. Sure, it will happen for me. Now, include the spending spree that brought in Nnamdi, Babin, Jenkins, Young, and Smith…I KNOW they will take care of me! He thinks to himself…“Jon Dorenbos, the fucking long snapper, is making more than me!” That’s a slap in the face.
Should he get 10 million? Absolutely not. But his agent is absolutely correct in requesting that amount to get him to the level in which he should get paid. Somewhere between 6-8 mil per year.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???

At least TO and Moss consistently played well
DeSean was shortarming passes and trying to avoid contact which led to losses and turnovers. DeSean has had bad performance to go with the bad attitude. Definitely not worth $10M/yr.
Desean is pretty low on the list of reasons on why we lost a bunch of games.
I agree that we shouldnt pay him 10m. Im just tired of people claiming that Desean is such a huge problem in the locker room.

Bullshit
This guy wants Larry Fitzgerald money. Even Al Davis wouldn’t give him that much (well, maybe).
Exactly
Last year is different. The Eagles actually COULDN’T pay him what he was worth. But as soon as that loophole cleared, they should have locked him up long term. Especially when they planned on signing a bunch of Pro Bowlers for a Superbowl run. Instead, they became the lifelong smoker that has lung cancer and is now mad at the world. Guess what…nobody forced you to light up, buddy.

He played like a little girl last year and I believe those concussions really ruined him. Also, what happens in a few years when he loses his speed? He’s a one trick pony and we could get a much better receiver with the money he’s asking for.

Look people...
In the last 25 years of Philadelphia Eagles football…there have been two receivers to go for 1,000 yards receiving in back to back years. Irving Fryar and DESEAN JACKSON. And he would have STILL done it this year, had he not been benched for a game and a half, or if jello arm Vince Young hadn’t been our QB for an extended period of time.
Seriously…get off his back just a touch. Does he deserve some criticism?? Absolutely. Does he deserve to be treated like he is worse than T.O? Absolutely not. Keep things in perspective.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
Not worth it to me.
Last year I felt like Vick almost had too many weapons. There’s no reason to put that much money into 1 reciever when we already have Maclin, Avant, Steve Smith, Celek, Shady, Harbor, Cooper, Hall, etc.
Give that money to a mean MLB.
Did you just count Steve Smith???
First, he played like ASS.
Second, he was on a one year deal and GUARANTEED not to come back with the effort he gave. How can you argue Desean is not worth the money and in the same breath, say Steve Smith is? Do you realize that in this one year Steve Smith made more than Desean has in his entire career???
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
Steve Smith – attempted to return from injury too early to help the team, and paid a price for it.
Desean Jackson – shied away from contact to avoid injury at a cost to the team.
I’d take another year of Steve Smith at ~2M, an extra year removed from his injury, before I take a year of Desean Jackson at 10M.
I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.
Was he trying to help the team...
…when he dropped like a sack of potatoes without contact one yard short of the first down in a winnable game???
Wow.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???
Is it because I'm black???
If DeSean was willing to take a reasonable contract, he would in fact be making more money than Steve Smith. Its becuase of DeSean and Rosenhaus’ ridiculous demands that he isn’t.
Again..
..they are only ridculous if you fail to realize the climate set around the league. Its called a contract NEGOTIATION for a reason. The agent, that bitch Rosenhaus, set his client’s price where the market (+ inflation) dictate based off of last year’s salaries. The team, wanting to pay as little as possible, sets the contract somewhere well under that number. Both sides are hoping to meet as far on their side from the middle as possible.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???

Damn...
…I was so amped by the mentioning of Steve Smith that I didn’t realize you named Harbor, Cooper, and Hall. (500 yards between them)

Obviously Steve Smith was signed as an insurance policy for DeSean maybe holding out and Maclin being sick, in a year they had money to spend on such contingencies. He wasn’t even used all year so last year doesn’t take away from what a reciever he is to me.
Next year against the cap we’re already tight with would you want 3 million or 8-10 million on a WR along with all the other weapons we have. Vick isn’t the kind of QB to even zero in on a #1 reciever. They drafted Roddy White for Vick and he never broke 1000 untill Matt Ryan came in. DeSean will be doubled and tripled making room for Vick but it’s too expensive for a decoy.
Vick in Atlanta...
..is a terrible comparison. You can’t simply compare Vick then to Vick now. Sure, Vick of ‘11 regressed from Vick of ’10, but it was still better than his best year in Atlanta in almost every way. And to say that Vick isn’t the kind of QB to even zero in on a #1 receiver is a little off base. All QBs need to develop a rapport with their receivers. And you never want someone to zero in on one guy. Our offense is one that is not built around the prototypical number 1 receiver, that’s true. But DeSean at 8-10 million could open up other things by simply being on the field that a 3 million guy (and I’m curious who you think could come in an play for 3 million aside from a rookie) couldn’t possibly do.
Also, Steve Smith may have been signed for insurance and barely saw the field. That doesn’t excuse the fact that he wasn’t effective when he was on the field. He could still be a great receiver, he could have been hampered by a knee injury. But from what we saw on game days, he was not good last year. And should not be considered a weapon for the Eagles.

But simpletons like you can’t realize that…too busy looking at his numbers.
BTW; if 62 receptions for 1156 yards and 9TDs aren’t number 1 receiver numbers, what is?? The three people targeted in this post had less yardage than that:

What the fuck? He’s the best receiver on the team. Yeah, I said it. Maclin is a solid #2. The guy can play, runs good routes and can occasionally get deep. But the NFL is full of Jeremy Maclins—guys with speed (4.45-4.55 40 times), good hands and (mostly) disciplined play. But Maclin truly does benefit from the extra attention defenses have to pay to DeSean. People are blinded by love for Maclin and believe that he’d flourish with Calvin Johnson numbers without DeSean. But that just isn’t so.

but I have never heard anyone even suggest that he is anything close to Calvin, and if people truly do think that they’re delusional. Maclin is the more complete, and better receiver. You will see next year after a full, and healthy offseason in which he isn’t afraid he’s on deaths doorstep.

Add another option – Franchise him and keep him. I don’t think Desean is worth the money he seeks due to his inability to compete for the ball in the air, his drops, his size, and his concussion history. Combine that with the fact that Lesean and Maclin both are on the verge of new deals which limit the amount that is available. All that being said, his value as a deep threat that takes the top off the defense makes everyone better…just not to the tune of 12 million per year. I’d franchise him, draft and develop his replacement, and then franchise him and trade him next offseason.
Jeremy Lin already gets more foul calls than the Sixers
I don’t understand how anyone can defend his on the field “business decisions”.
You join the NFL, you get handed a contract. X amount of years, x amount of dollars. It wasn’t like he was making minimun wage, he was making far more than anyone here. And worked far less.
Did he deserve more? Maybe. But thats why you work hard and hit free agency with good stats, not a down year because of your “business decisions”.
Not interested. Pay the man, he’ll under achieve and get hurt. Out of the league in 3 seasons.

Randy Moss and TO in their primes.
I'm great like Gatsby.

Kinda funny
But neither of those guys has a title. I think the argument is false anyway, because you need a team to win a title, and one guy isn’t going to make or break a team. Adding one piece might be the thing that sets you over the edge, but there are still 52 other players winning the title along with that one guy. And the me-me-me guys might not be the best teammates, but if you have a solid locker room, they aren’t going to stop you from winning the title. Owens didn’t stop the Eagles from winning in 2004 and Moss didn’t stop the Patriots from winning in 2007.

Let's put aside the money for now....
Let see how other factors fills in, and start with the locker room. U’ve heard other teams gets really heated and they jammed things down into each others throat. If he does go with another team with such locker room antics, he is really going to miss the thing he loves most, football. The Eagles locker room doesn’t do that, the coaches play an excellent role for the players to follow.
And if there ever were any consolation that Jackson can find solace in, it would have to be coach AR. Any other coach may not be there for him at all, some coaches have a certain player as an individuality as AR/Jackson, BBelichick/Brady, etc. Consolation isn’t something u can find easily in a team as a whole, but the team loves him like he belongs there. Peyton Manning saw everyone he was comftable with for a long time, get fired and there’s no consolation in that, it’s the NFL, just the way it works. Were Jackson, Peyton, his world as he knows it, could slip away, from the very soul of how important a coaching staffs should be.
Being one of them as a team, not as a “all me” kind of person, when u know what it’s truly like to get hit by a half-ton truck, and the money factor happens only on the field. He didn’t lose his most vital attribute, speed, that helps him gain the role as a threat decoy. Wondering if he lost his second most deliverance, the ability to catch the ball, is it the mentality as the ball narrows in for the close. As a returner, the ball seem to easily slipped from his grasp, eye-hand coordination could be in question. We all know concussions does some trip with the thought evaluations as well as the motor that controls bodily functions and flahes of eyes jiggering. Can’t be too careful when it’s a part of the game. Sometimes reconditioning helps in the process, but not to the point where a player is concerned, but progressively to the healing of certain attributes.
True, money is the major part of being in the NFL. I don’t believe for a second, Jackson asking for the amount he wanted was decided on his own. Without the clause of all this negotiation last season, he may or could have played better with a clearer conscious. Rosenhaus could have kept his mouth closed and let Jackson’s contact run out, before pushing the money bag. The way I see it, Jackson wouldn’t mind just being paid, period. Rosenhaus is a manipulating dog, where he can sniff out the personality of Jackson. Who wouldn’t, when money is the thing u’re going to try and get the most out of it. How much is Rosenhaus worth, anyway?
As talented as Jackson is, who in their right mind would let Jackson walk, when there could be something to be had via trade. Let face it, with a clear conscious with no one putting on pressure, he may be able to have the game of his life. He didn’t look good last year, week in and week out he was being pressured, my guess is Rosenhaus. Look what Shady did to him twice, he fired him. The media is another, and off-field pressure, I take it that Jackson doesn’t take to publicity very well, NFL there’s no privacy. Those mistakes on the field, could have been at it’s very minimum, minus personal pressure.
Put a franchise tag on him, not because he’s worth it, but because he really belongs in the Eagles uniform. Maybe, just maybe we will see him playing the game he loves at a notch or two better than last season, that would be fine with me. And of course, if we can allow it, considering the cap space.
Not really a big fan of trading him, without giving him a chance to play under better circumstances.
Tag him and put him out on a trade deal, as long as it doesn’t hurt the Eagles stocks with FA and Draft picks. We will do great with or without Desean, I would rather give him a chance. There is a slew of talented WR and TE in the market and draft. I would be fine with this too, when there’s chances to mix up talents and develop new schemes to work and rework the schematic with some upgraded potentials. It’s all about cap space and looking forward to a winning season against .500 and last season’s playoff teams.

I don’t see how anyone who watched games last year can just hope and pray he’ll be better next year to the tune of 9+ mil. Why did all the other potential free agents have to give it their all while Desean gets excused for playing in a skirt. Vick needs reliable, consistent hands. He isn’t the most accurate passer in the league, so he needs guys who will make plays. I don’t care how it happens, I just want a reliable #1.

DJax
Anyone who says let him walk is CRAZY. If anything sign him long term & bring in another WR for our 3 WR sets. DJAX has a unique skill-set & he is 1 of the reasons why our offense is so explosive that’s why I believe adding another Big Name to our WR Corps would be perfect.
More and More teams are now scheming us and other teams by playing different variations of a Nickel package. The NFL has gone completely pass happy keeping DJAX & Maclin is essential & adding another WR would help us out a lot. That is no knock against Avant but the opportunity is there to upgrade at skill position so I think we should do so.
The bigger issue here is that Maclin’s contract is up next year. So whatever they pay DeSean they are going to have to give to Maclin in the same range. So we can’t afford to overpay DJax as Maclin’s defending argument will be well I have been more consistent than DeSean
I know i said this before but the problem is DeSean’s agent. If he fires Drew he will have better negotiating Leverage with the FO. Shady fired Drew & got a new deal like 2 weeks later. So DJax is not truly the problem I believe its Drew.

It's never easy being an Eagle fan........but I'll be damned if I ever stop !
We don't need the best players at every position,
we need players that play their best , at every position.

Yeah, he definitely didn’t… he fired Drew and then re-hired him two weeks later.

I love Djax
but this year his immaturity has really got me (and I’m sure every other Eagle fan) concerned. I don’t like the fact that he seemed to have “given up” towards the end. And I realize that he’s doing this because he’s not making enough money, it’s just Djax focuses on money and himself first. This is a terrible trait for a team sport and especially for a team that’s on the cusp of reaching the superbowl.
I think if we can, we should get Mike Wallace and let DJax go. Wallace has great speed and he isn’t a bad possession receiver either

When will you people realize that Desean is an overhyped slot WR?
I would love to blow up Texas Stadium... With team still in it
36 plus years of rooting for the Eagles I think are comming to fruition this year.
I am not a FAN.... I am a FANATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is not a #1 and never will be....
Dont pay the guy with speed….do not pay the speed guy……speed is uncoachable yet there are more than one 4.24 in every draft….is desean different than Wallace, Ford, Murphy, Brown, V. Jackson? Hell no he is in a better system that plays to his strength….Wallace would be a beast in the eagles ffens as his route tree is much broader than Deseans…..Murphy would make us forget about Jackson the first time a ball doesn’t drop off his hands in the endzone or he makes the big catch taking a big hit instead of pulling up….FUCK DESEAN…. let him walk and take the third round pick…and get that 6’ WR from University of Whereinthehell that ran 4.12 at the schools pro day and put him in the slot and watch how the offense doesn’t miss a beat….
