THE 12: #1 DRAFT FOR DEPTH

Why:

WE signed Kyle DeVan off the street and started him the first 4 weeks of last season. Why? Because of a rookie who wasn’t quite maturing quickly enough, and because we had to move Todd Herremans out to RT; due to Winston Justice not being up to playing, and King Dunlap not being ready for prime time. Close your eyes and think about the second string Offensive Line….Now stop screaming.

Free Safety depth has been an absolute mess since even before Dawkins left after 2008.

If Asante Samuel goes, we’ll need a 3rd corner. You saw what happened in 2010. Joselio Hanson my…

Who carries the load if LeSean McCoy goes down?

As far as bodies we’re stocked at DE, DT, WR and LB. Some of the other units on the other hand could use an infusion of hungry, young, talent to plug in when the bumps and bruises start to set in.

I’m all for grabbing playmakers in the first two rounds, but once we get to round three we need to be sure that what happened to the 7-3 Bears in 2011 (Cutler AND Forte going down and the Bears finishing 8-8) doesn’t happen to us in 2012.

What:

Priorities in this draft after Round Two: OT, G/C, RB, blocking TE, CB/FS and a KR, a FB (it would be a nice add another blocker who can consistently hit moving targets on kick returns).

Actually you’re overreacting here buddy… We signed DeVan to help teach Watkins because he wasn’t ready yet, pretty good assessment but Watkins did get the hang of things and took over. We moved Todd over because Ryan Harris and Justice were both hurt and Evan Mathis was fucking shit up, it was probably more that Todd’s played OT before combined with Mathis really playing well that caused the move there.. If we resign King Dunlap them we’re good at OT this year and the young backups we have should be good to go.. That being said I wouldn’t be upset if we added some young depth along the OL.

Free Safety depth has been an absolute mess since even before Dawkins left after 2008.

No way? Really? Captain obvious here… Anyway Nate Allen got the swing of things and between Jarrett and Coleman we got a decent starter and good backup.

If Asante Samuel goes, we’ll need a 3rd corner. You saw what happened in 2010. Joselio Hanson my…

Hanson’s not the best CB, but he’s a decent option in the slot… However we do have guys like Brandon Hughes and Curtis Marsh (who we drafted pretty high last season) looking to get some playing time and I think of those guys we find a quality backup.

Who carries the load if LeSean McCoy goes down?

We’ll likely pick somebody up who can compliment Lewis should McCoy get hurt.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Nate Allen is not an NFL talent.

The bad news? Castillo's back.

The good news? With the 7-9 season coming up and all the Eagles games being played at 1:00 (and in the bag for the opponent by 2:30 at the latest), we'll all have plenty of time to rake the leaves and whack off. Stock up on your Astro Glide, ladies!

EB, I don't like to complete shit on people

but you are wrong. He played like a starter the last 6 games of the season and played well most of his rookie years. Give three years before you make that type of judgement.

Not sure why Dunlap and Hanson are getting pissed on. Dunlap has been excellent in his swing tackle role the last two years. As for Hanson, as long as you keep him in the slot, he’s also a valuable player to this team.

Love Dunlap

He might be a top backup tackle in the league

Dunlap had earned his slot. And he really went through the ringer to get there. He was accused of being an attitude problem and soft early on. He did his job well last year and this year. I want to keep him.

Hanson – I’m less sure of. Too many times burnt, too recent. I think he should be able to cover in the slot or not, or he should be replaced by someone who can.

I don’t know about the attitude problem, but I remember that one scout called him “Queen Dunlap” when they were taking his measurements at the combine, and he was flashing the moobs. Hilarilous!

I remember that. Poor guy. At least they could have given him a set of pasties for those bad girls.

Anyway the bad attitude thing was from his Senior year at Auburn when he had a melt-down after having been so dominant as a Junior/Sophomore. That’s supposedly why he was such a late pick. People were comparing him to the post-injury Shawn Andrews.

I’ve been up and down on the King, but I am happy to see how he has grown. He’s a good sports story.

I closed my eyes and thought about the second string offensive line, I remembered the Redskins game where they dominated their front 7.

Drafting for talent, not depth...

…is what must be done.

Drafting for depth is what gave us high motor busts like Graham and DTN. Drafting for depth is what gave us mediocre nonsense like Quniton Caver, Matt McCoy and Nate Allen. It is time to draft blue chip prospects, not scrap-heap knee injury reclamation projects that routinely bust out in the NFL.

Eagles go 8-8 or 9-7 in 2012/2013 season. 2/17/12

No way Eagles draft a LB in the first round 2012.

We will see if Spags was in the right place at the right time in the Gmens SB run. Or was that the fluke year and he really is just mediocre.

Nate Allen was drafted for depth? In what universe did this happen?

nate allen was drafted as a starter

he was the guy. he’s been injured, give the kid a break. And unlike Graham, he performed well before injury.

Me and EvilBanner agreeing

Man you know it’s no-brainer move.

Drafting for talent, not depth…
…is what must be done.

To put it nicely, Eff depth. We got depth, what we need are two or three studs to play in front of them. This team is young and improving in most areas, but we need impact guys out of this draft, hopefully one or four that can play right away.

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring it Home for Jerome.

Uh-greed

We’ve drafted for depth in the last couple of drafts when we brought in about 11 guys per year. Now start targeting a few impact guys.

by Birdflipper on Feb 22, 2012 2:53 AM EST up reply actions

It's not either / or

You always try to get BPA balanced by need and value. The Eagles won’t trade up #15 to get a LT. They are in a position that if a guy they have ranked as a 1st round talent is sitting there at 46 or 51 to take him. If they can’t extend Mathis they absolutely would. Reid is an active trader because he uses trades to balance need and value. That’s what makes him so unpredictable and so willing to move his 1st round pick up or down as with Kolb. As far as S they clearly believe in Allen and expect Jarrett or Coleman will emerge at the other position. Yet Page exposed an obvious need for depth. But they won’t go for FS/SS until 77 at the earliest and more likely 99 or 114. Another equally likely possibility is they decide a 2nd tied FA is there at a reasonable price. Page was a disaster. They know it. They will upgrade. They won’t do it in the top 50.

I think you’re overreacting a little bit here. That said, I would love to draft David Molk in the 4th as a backup C/G, assuming Jamaal Jackson leaves, which seems pretty likely. Perfect Howard Mudd guy, who gets by on athleticism and smarts rather than size. Very similar to Jason Kelce, but with more upside.

I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.

Personally I think we should

Round 1- DT
Round 2a- LB
Round 2b- WR
Round 3- QB/LB

This is assuming we sign a FA LB and don’t retain Jackson

Help For Idiots Is HERE!

If you go to this place called philadelphiaeagles.com, it will tell you who is on the team. Do you know how to read a roster?

by Birdflipper on Feb 22, 2012 3:08 AM EST up reply actions

When you really read this post

I guess all he’s saying is we need a No. 2 RB, No. 2 QB, OL, a return specialist and possibly a new slot corner, which isn’t anything different from what everyone else is saying, minus the concern about the line.

Lesson: Headlines matter. “Draft for depth” is not a popular thought. “Eagles’ late-round targets” probably would have better represented what was really written.

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring it Home for Jerome.

by D3Keith on Feb 21, 2012 12:13 AM EST reply actions

Is it possible?

You always draft depth… its not like because you draft a certain position, you get any more depth than one person, one roster slot. We have 1 first round pick, 2 second round picks and so on. Each pick will yield exactly one player… no more. We need to find talent, yes. But if we draft a starting LB, that, in turn, creates more depth. It would put a guy like Cheney or Fokou or Matthews on the bench, instead of on the field… ie more depth. We seriously need to upgrade the talent in the middle of our defense. I think we have given our safeties enough rope to hang themselves… time to show up, show out, or ship out… LB’s suck. Enough said. Keenan Robinson, Luke Keuchley, Audie Cole, any would be a vastly needed shot in the arm.
