How Stevie Johnson, Bills Contract Talks Could Affect DeSean Jackson
Last week, we showed why the framework for finding out DeSean Jackson's true market worth could be set by Stevie Johnson's next contract. Today, reports are that Johnson's deal could be close to getting done.
The Buffalo Bills and representatives for Stevie Johnson have exchanged proposals and are expected to meet at next week’s NFL Combine, a league source told The Buffalo News.
The Bills submitted a proposal over a week ago and Johnson’s agent, C.J. LaBoy, countered the team’s offer on Monday, according to the source. There have been no further talks although the two sides are scheduled to meet next week in Indianapolis.
The Buffalo News doesn't really say whether the sides are close or not, but merely the fact that they are talking, exchanging offers and plan to meet further shows that there's progress. If Johnson got a deal done before free agency, that would certainly give the Eagles and Drew Rosenhaus a pretty reasonable base to start from on a fair market deal for DeSean Jackson.

I still want to keep Jackson. He can be so freakin’ unstoppable when he’s on his game. I just hope they can find a reasonable deal or settle on a quality replacement.

This sums up 1Yard, and the current contract conundrum, as well as any 11 words in the English language can.
What if they franchise Stevie and we franchise Desean then we trade Djax for Stevie..
No reason why, just curious to see if that’s possible.
Well, it’s doable under NFL rules. I can’t see why it would ever happen, but it’s possible under the rules.

$5 mil a year
I am tellin everyone that is where it is going to be. Sign up Desean and lets get this started
No way
$5M a year is a slap in 1Yard’s face.
2 years ago he was the 1st NFL player ever to be selected to the Pro Bowl @ 2 positions.
$7-$8M per year is a mutually beneficial neighborhood for both parties to meet at.
Jackson
I am starting to think that we let him go. I definitely think they shouldn’t use the franchise tag. I have the feeling that the Eagles will get stuck with him this year paying 10M. That doesn’t leave a ton of room under the cap for other players.
With the crop of quality wide receivers on the free agent market, I believe the Birds would be better off going after one of those guys. DJ showed us this year how terrified he is of going over the middle anymore. I think those concussions have gotten in his head (no pun intended). His biggest value is as a deep threat. Let him go sign somewhere else and move on.
how can you guys be eagle fans
everyday i read these ridiculous comments about how jackson should only make this or make that, whats it to you if he gets ten million or 2.they should pay him top dollar.hes one of the pieces thats makes it interesting to watch.fitz g is not as fast as jackson ,he dosent get the seperation of jackson and phillys offense is not based on djack getting the ball all the time ,it is based on djack pulling two defenders out of the picture and far down the field so shady gets those extra yards.look i dont know who you people are but im a eagles fan and i want to win,so all this colston, johnson and who ever else talk is a bunch of crap.pay my boy so he wil play….GO EAGLES
Your last sentence sums it up for me, “pay my boy so he will play.” That is the problem. Jackson wants to get paid and once he is earning that big fat check, i get the feeling he will check out like he tends to do and just do enough to not get injured so he can keep getting those checks. And as you pointed out, running down the sideline to catch the deep ball or as a decoy is what that means. I personally don’t think that is worth 10M a year in a league with a salary cap and a team that has more needs than just one wide receiver.
Forgot to mention
I am an Eagles fan and I love watching Jackson. He is an exciting player. I loved it when he splashed into the endzone. I want the Eagles to keep him but I don’t think that the birds camp and the jackson camp will ever get close in contract negotiations. I am not at the table and am basically talking out my a$$ but from what I read, he wants way more than they want to pay. So, what I am saying is that if the Eagles can’t make headway in a contract before they have to franchise him, I’d say they should let him go rather than getting stuck paying him 10M without much room left to fill other needs.
Being a serious fan also means you know what is going on with the team aside from just the players on the roster. There’s no way you’re going to discredit my fandom because I care about how much cap money I feel is being wasted.
I look at the entire team and what they can and will do. The cap is a huge part of that. If DeSean gets overpaid and doesn’t do much to deserve it aside from take attention away from other players then I don’t want that. That cap money can go towards a top LB or extending LeSean McCoy and Maclin.
Fans also don’t have to end every post with GO EAGLES E A G L E S111
Look, it’s fine to say “pay him” and be done with it. But some of us do like to look at the reality of what might happen. And the reality of the situation is not just “pay him.” It’s “pay him what?”
That’s just the way this works. DeSean Jackson isn’t worth what he says he is no more than he’s worth what the Eagles say. He is worth something though and we’re just trying to figure out what that is.
In my opinion, the something he’s worth is probably going to be pretty close to the something Stevie Johnson is worth.

Stevie Johnson
Jason,
Do we have an idea of what Stevie Johnson is worth? It doesn’t say above and I was curious what you thought/heard.
Pay the man
reasonably
AR should have to wear a Flava Flav necklace until he learns how to manage a clock.
I am the proud target of temper tantrums.
Please Bills, for the love of god, do not overpay him. I want this situation resolved as quickly, fairly, and cost effectively as possible.

Agree. How can you be an Eagles fan and not want DJack in Philly? WE win the division because of DJack. So he had one off year. Pay him a reasonable salary and let’s win this Super Bowl.

“Pay him a reasonable salary”
That’s the whole idea…

of course we all WANT DJack in philly
if he’d volunteer his services, we wouldn’t refuse.
we WANT him here…it’s just a question of at what cost.
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
7-8 would be reasonable.......
he is worth that.Maybe push 9 in incentives {lots of td’s }
10 is totally absurd.
I like him , but not at that cost.
It's never easy being an Eagle fan........but I'll be damned if I ever stop !
We don't need the best players at every position,
we need players that play their best , at every position.
If he can give us
1300+yards
at least 10 TDs.. (looking more in the 12+ range)
2 PR TDs (no fumbles)
Then 10 mill would be justified, and I wouldn’t even mind giving it to him..
Plus he is probably the best decoy in the NFL.. How many times have u seen a TD to Maclin or Avant, because djax runs a crossing route and takes like 3 or 4 defenders with him
Chances are he can’t put up those numbers though… so produce anything less, and you get paid less.
Just wait until December..
Let's just hope Stevie doesn't get over 8+
7.5 to 8 would be reasonable enough but sign him to medium contract, if he plays great during that time then increase it the next time around if he’s willing to go out there and perform and give us what we expect from him
