5 Names on Defense
Here are 5 Defensive UFA names that the Eagles should absolutely target this offseason. None of the 5 is a "big name" player, yet all are fairly young (in their prime, or entering their prime) and will be very reasonable to sign, financially.
LB-Jo-Lonn Dunbar (New Orleans)
LB-David Hawthorne (Seattle)
LB-Wesley Woodyard (Denver)
DT-Jason Jones (Tennessee)
S-Steve Gregory (San Diego)
With these free agents, we get a whole new linebacking corp. I like Dunbar manning the MIKE, Hawthorne as the SAM, and Wesley as the WILL. Chaney's health is a question mark. I like Rolle, but I have to wonder if he has the size to hold-up an entire season. Matthews needs more time for development. Clayton is best suited for passing downs, or in nickel formations. Jordan should be kept as a reserve/ST player. Let Jordan and Clayton battle it out in training camp. Fokou is gone.
With these moves, our LB depth would look like this:
WILL-Woodyard, Rolle, Clayton
MIKE-Dunbar, Hawthorne, Chaney, Matthews
SAM-Hawthorne, Chaney, Jordan
DT-Jason Jones makes perfect sense for the Eagles. He is very familiar with Washburn, and the Wide 9. He is still fairly young, and his potential is not yet fully tapped. He could possibly even start over Patterson, depending on Patterson's health after surgery. And, he provides us with great depth:
DT-Jenkins, Patterson, J. Jones, Dixon, Landri
S-Steve Gregory is exactly what the Eagles need. A player with solid experience, and who can play either safety position. Do I want Gregory to be our starter in 2012? No, I want our high draft picks (Allen and Jarrett) to pan out. Do I want the intensity that Gregory will bring with him to training camp, to help push these young players? Absolutely. Do I want him as solid depth to our Safety corp? Yes please. And, he would do just that:
FS-Allen, Gregory
SS-Jarrett, Coleman, Gregory
5 players on defense...5 relatively inexpensive players on defense. This would make a world of a difference for this unit, and it provides the FO to truly draft the best player on the board in this year's draft.

Yes, I figure Samuel to be gone. Not a bad little depth chart to go into the draft with.

I can dig it. Don’t you think Coleman and Jarrett should battle it out at training camp though? I wouldn’t give Jarrett the go ahead depth chart nod yet only because Coleman has been proven to be a decent/suitable player, while Jarrett only has promise. Also what about Hughes at the CB??
Just a random thought but what if they lined up Fokou as a DE? I remember they played with him in that joker position last season or two seasons ago and he generated a relatively decent pass rush, I’m surprised they don’t plant him in the ground for training camp and see what he can do. Maybe it’s a preference that he play LB?
I agree...
Coleman and Jarrett do need to battle it out. As for Hughes, the same applies. Let him battle it out. Competition is only going to help these young players and make them more hungry for a roster spot.
I do not agree about Fokou, though. We have enough pass rushers on defense. We need LB’s who can stop the run and defend the pass. Fokou just does not seem to fit the wide 9 scheme.

Somebody watched Adam Caplan on PE.com

Iggles Nest
"Stats are for fantasy and losers. Winning is an attitude."
Actually...
I was reading an article, he wrote, on the sideline view. But, yes I agree with some of the names he was talking about as possible FA pick-ups. I like Caplan…smart dude and he
dishes it back to Spadaro.

Not bad.
I would break the bank a bit if possible though or use the draft as well. I wouldn’t want to bring in all these LBs. Dunbar isn’t bad but I would prefer Lofton if possible (probably not) or Kuechly. I think Rolle could work out, but bringing in someone for him to battle with and create solid depth isn’t a bad thing.
Gregory definitely would make for nice depth or spot starts, I’m with you there. And why not bring in a lineman who knows what the Wide-9 is about in Jason Jones?
Basically I say yes to Gregory, yes to Jones, and yes to one or two of those LBs but hopefully not all three.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
Could use some info on these guys other than just their names.

This is what you get when you try to give constructive criticism.

I think you miss the point. If you’re going to say we should target these 5 guys who are mostly unknown, you need to make a case for why we should. If you just say we should target these 5 unknown guys, there’s no point in saying anything at all.

Jo-Lonn Dunbar-very productive in limited time as MLB for New Orleans, filling in for Vilma. Sound tackler, very strong, and has solid instincts. May take time to learn the wide 9, but a player with a lot of potential, and at a cheap price.
David Hawthorne-played well at MLB for Seattle last year, but is more of a natural SAM. He is very solid against the run, and he is suprisingly fluid in pass coverage. He can play over most TE’s, and is very strong in run support.
Wesley Woodyard-a very gifted athlete, Woodyard fills in at the WILL very well. He is very strong, and he tackles very well. He would hold his own on the weakside against the, and he has the athleticism to stay on the field in nickel formations. Again, a player that we can have for cheap.
Jason Jones-as stated before, Jones knows Washburn and Washburn’s system, the wide 9, from his time in Tennessee. Jones would provide another pressure DT, to go along with Jenkins. This, meaning, Jones has a knack of.getting to the quaterback. He is decent against the run, and he has a ton of un-tapped potential. If anyone can get him to reach his maximum potential it is Washburn.
Steve Gregory-another very talented athlete, Gregory can fill-in at either Safety position. He is very solid at ST, and he is a high.character player. I am not projecting Gregory as a starter, but he is a great role player and provides a gteat deal of depth at either safety position. He will also push our young players to get better, and he brings with him a good deal of experience. Again, low cost/high reward player.

As a Kentucky fan Woodyard isn't an OLB,
He’s a guy you want as your MIKE, everybody seems to think he’ll plug in at WILL just fine and that may be the case but honestly we’re better off putting him in the MIKE position.
Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...
Wild_Eagle!
Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

I am a Syracuse fan, I love Steve Gregory
that said…he’s still basically Kurt Coleman just with lighter skin.
Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"
i dunno...
The only guy i feel good with in Dawkside’s list is Hawthorne. I’ve seen a couple of Seabird games and his play was exceptional. I watched the other guys games and i see them on some plays here and there but i think that Hawthorne has more to offer. The DE rotation with Babin/Hunt… Babin and Hunt are both pass rush specialist. Giants and the ’Skins would just run right at them. Both will explode up field to turn the edge and the RB slips right underneath them(Seahawk game was a great example…FUCK U SKITTLES!!!). Big money gains. Tapp wasnt flashy but at least he was balanced and played the run well.
my bad, havent been looking at the date of the posts. got excited from watching and reading all this FA stuff so i had to check to see what guys on this site had to say.
Just head over to the new Mock Musing section.
Maybe you could get the ball rolling.
That's like your opinion, man.
