Have we learned our lesson yet? To read the posts of some fans, the answer is a loud and long NO! We want coaches and players canned yesterday, and we watch in horror as the result is even worse than before. Is there really light at the end of the tunnel?
You bet there is! Some teams are better individually than as a sum of their parts. The eagles of 2011 and 2012 and the cowboys come to mind. There are some teams that are better overall than the sum of their parts. The 2011 NY giants come to mind.
What is that difference? Continuity! In the last 3 years, the eagles have had 4 defensive coordinators, 2 offensive line coaches, 3 defensive back coaches, 3 defensive line coaches, etc.
The key ingredient to the eagles success in the past and in the future is hiring the coaching staff who are consistant in their schemes. With Andy Reid, Jim Johnson, the eagles had more than 10 years of consistant philosophy and scheme. In recent years, we've been changing coaches and methods mid season. Complicating the issue, we've loaded the team with new free agents and rookies. The result? The team is a group of individuals. Even in losing, the perception of the team being better than their record and better than the other teams has been prevalent the past two seasons. It's time to start over. Not because Big Red is a zero... but because we need to reset the team to square one, get all coaches and players on the same page, and stay on that page consistantly for the season.
It's likely we won't be a playoff team immediately. That's okay, as long as we make progress as a team each year towards improvement. Right now... we are stuck in the spin cycle.
