Potential Eagles Defensive Back Draft Prospect for 2013

Phillip Thomas, a fifth year senior and a consensus 1st team All-American safety out of Fresno State, has lead the nation in interception and is tied for first in int for TD's. An all around athlete with a prototypical size of 6'1 215 pounds, he has the skills and body to contribute right away in the NFL.. Fresno State's turnaround has been due to a large part of Thomas play on defense.

Pro: True ball-hawk in the mold of Ed Reed, he is capable of taking any interception to the house. He led Fresno State in tackles and also has 12 tackles for a loss. Can get to the quarterback as he made 4 sacks on the season. He also caused 4 forced fumbles and made one fumble recovery. Has outstanding Instincts to go along with above average athleticism, and plays physical. Can play in the box, cover slot receivers, and tight ends. Plays special team. Best all-around safety in the draft. 1st team All-American, Thorpe Finalist. Film Wiz. Coached by Tim McDonald, Hall of Fame safety of the San Francisco 49ers and Von Miller's college coaches; Tim DeRuyter and Nick Toth. If he checks out medically at the NFL Combine and excel like he has throughout the season at Senior bowl, Thomas has a chance to jump into the first round.

Cons: Suffered a season ending injury days prior to the start of the 2011 season with a broken leg and ankle in 2011. Was granted Medical Redshirted and returned or the 2012 season. Took a couple gambles as he tries to make a play on the ball resulting in getting burn early in the season. Tackling fundamentals breaks down at certain, needs to wrap up better. Can shed blocks but needs to do it consistently.

My thoughts: Phillip Thomas has the skills to become a stud safety in the NFL. Has work ethics to excel at the position and can solidify any secondary from day 1. Overshadowed by other safeties in bigger conference, Thomas is the best defensive player that no one really talks about. Team leader and intense competitor, raw and extremely coach able, Thomas has developed into a star play maker in college with skills that translate into the next level. Not many players has the size, speed, and ball skills that Thomas showed this year. Can play both Safety position but might be best suited for deep center field.

His picks at 4:40 and 5:38

Sack and forced fumble at the beginning of Video, interception at 1:52.

Interception at 2:00

Pick 6 at 3:12
