The eagles are in trouble folks, deep trouble.
The reality of the eagles is that our "Andy Reid System" is broken. How deep is the break? Well, in the past three seasons, the eagles have:
Changed all position coaches at least once (except Marty M).
Changed Defensive coaches three times
Changed DL to emphasize pass rush, which they no longer do.
Changed OL to emphasize pass blocking, and blocking downfield, which they no longer do.
Acquired the most covetted free agents.
And yet, the eagles are worse now than ever. In fact, when trading Donovan McNabb to the redskins, the eagles were unofficially announcing the move towards a younger and "better" team. Three years later, we are still waiting for that better.
There is a deeper problem in Philly than we are discussing. We have lost the ability to assess
skills in NFL players. We seem to be bringing on guys only to watch them wallow into the gutter of mediocrity and insignificance.
I would rather be upset on draft day, and delighted with our standings, than 100 delighted on draft days, only to be disappointed when the season gets underway.
Mel Kyper gives Kansas City, and Oakland, and Cleveland, high draft marks... and they wallow in the basement each year.
Kyper is starting to rank the eagles drafts better. And not surprisingly, into the basement we go.
Andy as coach is not the problem. Andy/Howie as GM and player assessment are.
