The season is about half way through and I wanted to take a look bake on how this year’s defensive rookies are doing so far. I listed players A.) whom we(BGN) liked before the draft, B.) whom pundits had high on their boards, C.) were drafted in the first three rounds. If there is someone I am missing let me know. I will edit the post. I like holding myself accountable and even more so, those of you who act like they can do no wrong ha!
Let me start with LB. This was where the majority of us saw the Eagles being the weakest and wanted with all we had for them to draft first. I was one of those people. But I maintained we would never draft a LB in round 1 under Reidiculous. My LB list went as follows:
1. Hightower – I thought he was undervalued due to his injury in college before his last year in college. He came on really strong as the year went on, including the bowl game where he was dominant.
2. Keuchly- All the guys did was find the ball and tackle everyone he set his sights on. The perceived knock on him was he couldn’t cover at this level.
3. Kendricks and David I had even.
FYI – I hated Burfict based on people calling him the next Ray Lewis. Probably the only person who hated him more was JasonB.
It seems as if David is having the best season for the OLB's so far. But it is close between him and Burfict. Burfict has less tackles but has been a bigger play maker. Keuchly is the best MLB so far. He has recorded the most tackles and made the most big plays. I can't say I would rather him than Cox and Kendricks. Cox looks to be a stud DT in the making. And Kendricks seems to be a very good player.
Defensive tackle was the next position we all agreed needed to be addressed early. Poe was liked for about 3 days past the combine. Until we all came to our senses and realized (some faster than others) how a man with that much talent and lacked any stats, must not be good. Cox was consensus pick and the Eagles did that for us. Here is how he shaped up to his peers.
FYI - I had Cox, Brockers and Still as my top 3. Through some of your well composed points I also liked Worthy.
Wolfe stat wise is the best so far. One thing I did not look up was hurries. And Another thing not shown was how well these guys clog the line for the run game. Next is Cox and the rest seem pedestrian. It's early to judge but they don't seem to be doing much.
This concludes what we felt was our biggest 2 needs as a group. 3rd was a redzone threat aka the" big number 1 WR". Safety was another place some wanted but disagreed on if there was any player worthy of a early pick . I wanted DE Jones because I felt Cole was fading and Babin was old. And I had little faith in Graham. I didn’t want them to use their first on Jones but I knew his athleticism would create problems for OT’s in the NFL. Overall the DT position was supposed to be the deepest. And from the stat sheet it seems they were over valued. We hit on our first two picks maybe for the first time in Reids regime. Obviously too little to late.
