Reynolds' "botched" snaps

Dallas Reynolds had a bad game on Sunday. Headlining the debacle was his 3 "botched" snaps. However, I don't think you can blame him for two of them.

The first, and most egregious, was the snap that resulted in a turnover. My issue is, I think this one was pretty clearly Mike Vick's fault. Here's the video of the game highlights. The play's at the 12 second mark, so you thankfully don't have to relive the entire shitshow.

There's two things to watch for; 1) Vick's left leg prior to the snap, and 2) the rest of the offense.

The video is grainy, but you can still kinda see what happens. Vick is yelling at someone, I think it was Jackson, when the ball was snapped. Just prior to the snap, Vick lifts his left leg, but only slightly. When a team is in shotgun, a leg lift is usually used by the QB to tell the center to snap the ball. Vick kinda gives a "half" leg lift, which doesn't make much sense. In fact, I think it pretty clearly shows Vick just had a brain fart. When the QB is under center, a leg lift is used to tell a player to go in motion. He couldn't get Jackson lined up properly (as evidenced by Mike yelling at DeSean), so I think Mike's first instinct was to lift his leg in order to send DeSean in motion. It only took Vick a split second to realize that the result of this action would not be to send a player in motion, but to tell the center to snap the ball (since they were lined up in shotgun), hence a little hesitation resulting in a "half" leg lift. Of course, Dallas interpreted this as "snap the ball", which he did, and hit Vick in the face with it.

The second reason I think this one's on Vick is because of what the rest of the offense did; namely, they all moved. This tells me that the rest of the team was expecting a snap. In fact, Vick is really the only one on the offense that didn't seem to be expecting it, which again leads me to believe that it was Vick that screwed up, not Reynolds.

The other bad snap I'm talking about was the one that was negated due to an offside penalty. This one I'm sure wasn't a bad play by Reynolds. I couldn't find a replay of it, but it was pretty simple. Reynolds was looking right at the defender that jumped offside. When he saw the defender jump, he probably figured, "If I snap the ball, the worst that can happen is we get 5 free yards". So he snapped the ball before Vick was ready, and it resulted in a loose ball. Obviously the play didn't count though, and they got 5 free yards just as I'm sure Dallas intended. Even though it looked like a miscue, it was actually just a heads up play by the center.

I'm not trying to say Reynolds was good on Sunday. I haven't watched a full replay of the game nor do I want to. I'm just saying that I think Dallas is taking the blame for 2 snaps that weren't his fault.
