Eagles vs Lions Final Score: Eagles lose 26-23 after late collapse

The Eagles defense failed to hold a lead for the second straight week as Philadelphia falls to 3-3

For the second straight week, the defense failed to hold a 4th quarter lead and the Eagles lost 26-23 to the Lions at Lincoln Financial Field.

Unlike last week, this was one wasn't a case of the defense playing well overall but giving up one drive. This was a complete and total defensive collapse as they allowed 17 points in the 4th quarter and barely served as a road bump to the Lions offense.

After holding Matt Stafford to a line of 6-18 for 96 yards in the first half, the defense just fell apart in the 2nd as Stafford completed 16-27 for 220 yards and 2 TDs (1 running and 1 passing). For the 3rd straight game the Eagles defense failed to record a sack, the first time since 1983 they've had such a drought.

The offense certainly can't go blameless despite the fact that they did actually play much better in the 2nd half of this game. They had a very lackluster first half and, of course, turned the ball over 3 times. This is an absolute crisis situation with these turnovers and its hard to see what if anything is being done to stop them. Michael Vick threw 2 picks in this game, both of which were 100% his fault.

And I have to criticize Vick for his overtime performance. There's no doubt that the offensive line is horrendous and was arguably at its worst today, but after doing a really good job getting rid of the ball and running to avoid pressure all day, Vick held onto it on 2 straight plays and paid it for a with a pair sacks. It really looked to me like he was trying to win it on one play... instead, he effectively lost the game on 2 plays.

Still, as bad as the offense was in OT, the defense still got the benefit of a good punt to put the Lions on the 50 yard line. They immediately surrendered a big pass to Tony Scheffler that put the Lions just on the edge of FG range in one play. But then, as they had done all day, the Lions offense gave the D a gift in the form of a holding penalty to knock themselves out of FG range. But that was no bother as Stafford just hit Brandon Pettigrew on another crossing pattern one play later to get it all back and more.

Just a shameful performance all around at home as the Eagles head into their bye at 3-3.
