Should We Give Our Defense More Love Than It Deserves?

99 Points..... That's how many points according to the stat-books is how many points we've given up in 5 games this year. That's 12th best in the NFL. But should we give more love to our Defense, than that?

I will compare our defense to the top 5 D's in points given up, but first let's look at ours, game by game:

However we have to remember one thing. Offensive giveaways returned for touchdowns are included for touchdowns. Also the Eagles have 14 giveaways, 7 more than average. Two of them have been returned for touchdowns, so I will exclude that. I will also adjust the our offensive turnovers to seven, so there will be a level playing field. It wouldn't be fair to judge our defense by our offensive mistakes.

Cleveland: 6 true offensive Points allowed. Cleveland's average scoring offense, excluding us: 21 PPG.

Baltimore: 23 true offensive Points Allowed. Baltimore's average scoring offense, excluding us:27 PPG.

Arizona: 13 true offensive Points Allowed. Arizona's average scoring offense excluding us: 17 PPG.

NYG: 17 true offensive points allowed. New York's average scoring offense excluding us: 34 PPG.

Pittsburgh: 13 true offensive Points allowed. Pittsburgh's average scoring offense excluding us: 25 PPG.

Excluding the excessive turnovers and giveaways returned for touchdowns, the Eagles have given up an adjustment of 14.4 offensive points per game, while the average scoring offense of the teams we played is 25.2 points per game. +52, or +10.8 PPG

Lets look at the top defenses in PPG allowed how they shutdown their opponents :

San Francisco: 13.6 PPG Total: + 62/+12.4 fewer points given up than the average scoring offense of opponents

Seattle: 14.0 PPG Total: + 27/+ 5.4 fewer points given up than the average scoring offense of opponents

Chicago: 14.2 PPG Total: +30/ +6 fewer points given up than the average scoring offense of opponents

Houston: 14.6 PPG Total: +31/+6.2 fewer points given up than the average scoring offense of opponents

Arizona: 15.6 PPG Total: + 38/+7.6 fewer points given up than the average scoring offense of opponents

That puts us in good company, as you can see...
