NFL Wildcard Weekend Open Thread
Wildcard Weekend continues in the NFL today with two more games. We start off with the Giants hosting the Falcons. We'll all be hoping to see Philly guy Matt Ryan, who grew up an Eagles fan, take down a team that he is certainly used to not liking.
This afternoon the Steelers travel to Denver to take on Tim Tebow and Broncos. "Tebowmania" has quickly faded away as the QBs luck has run out and play has not improved. But, as we know, real legends are made in the postseason. And if Tebow can take down the Steelers, who have the NFL's #1 defense, he could really start to build something.

I would like to add I hope Jacobs breaks his hip. Dude sucks and is a 260 pussy. Seriously hr runs so high and needs 5 yds to get up to speed.
by VRFC8 on Jan 8, 2012 12:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
As long as Jacobs has that one carry where he gains 15 yards and breaks 4 tackles, the media and announcers will consider to hail him and disregard the other 18 carries where he averages 1.9 YPC.
He is the most overrated back since Marion Barber (who I also still hate)

wow - how blind some people can be
When both Giants and Eagles were playing good and winning 10 games 2010 season no one said a peep that around here that you was lucky to win that second game and therefore get into the playoffs
This year both of our teams sucked but the Giants got in and we’re so awful no one understands how we got in
Talk about homer thinking around here
When its to your advantage you guys deserve it
if its to another teams advantage – they’re lucky, undeserving, blah, blah
but we’re homers – alright

Rooting for Giants
I just don’t like Atlanta, especially the dirty hits they’ve put on our team. Giants winning the wild card and losing in the next round is fine by me.
this
Atlanta is such an unlikeable team. They complain about Brees running the score up when he broke the passing record, saying the loss to GB last year was a fluke and have one of the dirtiest players in Robinson. Also, Matty Ice? Most undeserved nickname for a QB ever. He has never performed in playoffs or against great teams and Atlanta acts like hes right up there with Brady Brees and Rodgers
ummm
go Falcons? I hate the fucking Falcons
Prediction: the 3-4 will be out of style in two years.
So no, I will not shut up about stupidity.
by bdawk4ever on Dec 11, 2011 1:39 PM EST
I know
This is a rough game. Because I really do hate the Falcons. But if the Falcons win, we don’t really have to deal with their fans. If the Giants win, we’ll never hear the end of it.
So for my own sanity, I’m gritting my teeth and pulling for the Falcons today.

Someone refresh my memory; if the Jets beat the Giants in week 16, the Giants would have had to beat the Cowboys for us to be in the playoffs, right?

Would’ve been very plausible – the Jets really really fell apart come their game against us. Now it’s like the entire locker room there is disintegrating.
As bad and inconsistent as Eagles played this year, I still think we were the best in the divison overall. I mean, look at the point spreads – Giants are going into the playoffs with negative points!

I hate to say it
But what the Broncos are doing to Tebow is wrong. First off, the boy helped get you where you are along with the defense. Even if he plays bad, let him cap of what he started. Second, why the fuck does Brady Quinn get an oppourtunity to do anything? The man ain’t thrown an NFL regular season pass since 2009 and suddenly gets to take over if Tebow is bad? I’m indifferent on Tebow. Not my division, not my problem really. But he did what he did and helped get them where they are. Let him finish it out, win or lose.

A. Matty Ice
B. Eli
C. Brandon Jacobs
D. Dunta Robinson

Is there any way both teams could lose??
Drives me nuts to see two teams the Eagles blew 4th quarter leads to after Vick got hurt, both make the playoffs by one game over the Eagles.
Drives me crazy as well. Especially the damn Atlanta game – not only did the Falcons get a BS interception called in their favor, but then the dropped pass at the end by Maclin. Argh! Not to mention of course the dirty hits we have to put up with.
yeah and the TD drop by Jackson… followed by a red zone turnover on a tipped pass. Jackson ran down Edwards to save the TD but the D still caved.
Also, the play before Vick got hurt, Celek dropped an easy TD pass.
So many ridiculous things happened in all of those losses.
maddening
Yet we blame the defense for the season….just saying.
by VRFC8 on Jan 8, 2012 1:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
nah, I think most fans put almost equal blame on both sides. I’ll never forget Maclin blowing 3 game-winning drives by himself.
I say 2.5
That one where Vick threw it high and Maclin had to leave his feet for the catch was on both of them. Vick for the high throw, Maclin for not keeping his feet.

It may not be their traditional place to act this way, but I do like that our players seem to a) get along very well as a team, b) have a high regard for where they should be able to play, and c) feel like there is something to prove for next year. Fingers crossed for 2012. It’s a tough schedule, so it’s really got to be winning the division.
I don’t disagree with anything you just said, but to say what he did basically tries to blame the fact that they’re not in the playoffs on someone else. I hope that they don’t all have that attitude.

I don’t know if they’re really taking steps forward though in the bigger picture. They might be winning more games, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s better for the team as a whole… since it only gets them a mid-to-late draft selection, and it’s not like any superstar FA is coming here.
Like I said, they’re fun to watch, but I don’t think it helps their chances of contending.

Howie and Andy need to do this:
1) draft Floyd at No. 15
2) trade a second rounder, Asante Samuel, and a third to CIN for their 1st rounder (17)
3) draft Luke at No. 17
4) draft best BPA (prob DT) in the 2nd round
MEH to that
We have Antonio Dixon, Cullen Jenkins, Landri and Patterson. That’s a deep, talented DT pool right there
This is a piviotal year for Brandon Graham because we do eventually need to get younger at DE.
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
MEH to what
drafting a DT in the 2nd? I say BPA, which may happen to be DT…..Patterson could very well be a non-factor….then what?
Then we only have Jenkins, Dixon, Landri, Owens, Laws…

The Giants made the playoffs because of:
-A missed tackle on Cruz
-A red zone interception served up by Steve Smith
-An injury to Vick on a late hit
-An offsides on Jason Babin
Hard to root for them, lol.

I don’t want any one here to cheer for the Giants – no knock on you guys for rooting against them
I just find it interesting that all I read is what a fluke it is for the Giants to be here – and the logic behind it is because the division is weak – that makes no sense
a “mediocre” team wins in a weak division doesn’t make it luck.
To answer your question – maybe I come on here to remind myself why I’m “suppose” to hate you guys – I don’t know.

Falcons are a good regular season team and that's as far as that goes...
Their running game was dominated by the Gnats and they have a weak run defense too.. smh
Who here is thinking....
this should/could have easily been us putting the stop down on the Falcons at home?
funny thing is...
despite all the shitty games….we just needed one….just one freaking game that we lost to go our way…that’s it
Even then though
I certainly think the result would’ve been an Eagles victory. And a lot more enjoyable a game as well. Giants were asleep at the wheel the entire first half.
That's about 90% of the Giants game this year
They would be a really different team if they scored first but it’s rare for that to happen

I honestly think
the Giants will beat the Packers next week. They are playing well, and they have the confidence of the 35-38 game earlier this year

Have you watched the packers D this year?
They suck. Plus, with the Giants D-Line playing this well, Rodge will have a little more trouble than last game. Eli will tear apart the Packers defense into little pieces as well

GOD DAMN!!!
That was the dirtiest hit I have seen in awhile. Harrison is out to fucking maim opposing players. No way Decker is playing in the rest of this game.
um yea
But he went right for a players knees when he clearly had a shot for his chest. Just stop if you are defending him. U have played rugby for 10 yrs and the tackling in the NFL is a joke. It is actually a penalty and sin bin if you hit a guy above the neck. Also a penalty if you don’t wrap up on a tackle. So for NFL players to day they don’t know what the league wants as far as tackling is a joke

They are just devout Catholics who can’t bear watching Baby Jesus get harmed in any way.
really, you see refs control the momentum of a game.
for example that Ben threw down the field was caught but some how it was ruled incomplete
You’re just bad at football – it was clearly incomplete.

How many times did Vick get hit like that and not a fucking flag.
Tebow took a little hit after he got rid of the ball and penalty flag flys
yea because I hate when refs give a team an advantage
they fucked us Eagles too many times, even Andy said it in one of his post game interviews .
It gets the flag when the receiver doesn't have control of the ball, or in no way can get the ball.
When the receiver has control of the ball and is moving around, helmet to helmet isn’t a flag. Unless I’m completely wrong.
by LegendKnight22 on Jan 8, 2012 6:18 PM EST up reply actions
rewind if you have to
it was 3rd down he caught the ball and was running up field with the ball so yes he had possesion and he got stopped with a helmet to helmet hit by the broncos player
….then by the rule he wasn’t defenseless. But don’t let the rules stand in the way if ur rant.
by VRFC8 on Jan 8, 2012 6:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
" But don’t let the rules stand in the way if ur rant."
well find me where in the NFL helmet to helmet is permitted?
go ahead I’ll wait……
That’s what i thought
It may not be technically permitted
But it wasn’t a penalty. I don’t know what you’re going on about. Are you saying hitting a player, defenseless or not, helmet to helmet is dangerous? Of course. Or are you saying that it isn’t legal at all? If that’s the case, you’re wrong- when the receiver has FULL possession, helmet to helmet is more or less legal. Here are the rules:
“A tackler using his helmet to butt, spear, or ram an opponent.” In no way did I see the tacklet use his helmet to do any of those three things. He lowered his head, Wallace lowered it as well.
“Any player who uses the top of his helmet unnecessarily.” Again, the tackler in no way used the top of his helmet unnecessarily. It was a tackle the ended up with the use of the helmet because both players lowered their heads.

This is a Eagles site , we say whatever we feel about other teams our QB is Vick.

But I feel like the hate is because of the attention he gets/got during that little win streak of theirs (which is fine by me).

The classic way to end the game. And… dare I say, some passes that weren’t too bad? I wonder if the Elway/Tebow project will turn him into an actual QB in the off season.
I don’t think that the Broncos will fare nearly as well against the Pats, but I think this single win was vindication enough for their season in a way.

At least a good game
Rest were duds this weekend except tonight.
Damn shame the Eagles didn’t play the Falcons because I am sure that they would be headed to Lambeau next weekend.
I'm not.
I don’t think for a second that the Eagles are not capable of playing a weak enough game to give a team like the Falcons a fighting chance to win.
That Denver game wasby far the best game of the weekend.
It was gratifying to see Pittsburgh go down in flames. #24’s effort on the last play was a thing of beauty.
It was even better to see Tebow play well and lead the Broncos to a win in a playoff game, just so the truckloads of people who pretend to know enough about football ( which they absolutely do not ) to pass judgment on a young QB and his future are proven wrong.
I wonder how many of those football geniuses will admit they were wrong.
Last 3 weeks
Mean nothing? Steelers were missing a few key pieces, 2 more DL got hurt today in the 1st half & had to play their 3 DL every down in the 2nd half, and played too aggressively in the secondary.
Tebow made some nice throws though especially the Royal TD pass but he still looks from below average to horrendous throwing the ball.
If Tebow plays really well next week & the Broncos win in Foxboro, then I will give him a lot of credit but for the most part the Broncos’ offense has looked pedestrian to pathetic while he has been at the helm as the starting QB.
No,
I would say the last 3 weeks mean something.
Those are valid excuses you note for the Steelers, though.
What surprised me the most this entire weekend
Was how bad and ineffective the Steelers’ LB looked today. They played the run game adequately enough but Mundy/Polamulu were playing up in the box an awful lot today to contain McGahee/Tebow.
Woodley looked slow and hobbled all day due to his injury. Harrison was a non-factor all day & was out of place several times on the corner with contain. Looked like a slow, old man today. Farrior’s done.
LOL..thanks for the laughs...
Seeing all of the hatred spewed towards the Giants put a smile on my face. Wishing injury to Jacobs, hating on a QB your GM would swap for Vick AND throw in a whole drafts worth of picks for, and hating on a WR corps whose #3 WR (Manningham) would be your #1 WR literally had me cracking up.
If I can get Jason on my radio show again I hope some of you guys call up to have spirited debates about football. My co-host Tim Donaghy (YES, the ref who got busted) is a HUGE Philly fan so you’ll have some support. No matter what anyone says, your fanbase is always passionate about the team.
