Steve Spagnuolo Talks About His Tenure With Rams & The Future

ST. LOUIS, MO - JANUARY 1: St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo stands on the sidelines in the second half of the game against the San Francisco 49ers on January 1, 2012 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. The 49ers defeated the Rams 34-27. (Photo by Whitney Curtis/Getty Images)

Steve Spagnuolo sat down with Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for a very long interview to discuss his time as head coach of the Rams and to look forward to the future. I'd certainly recommend reading the whole thing, but for our purposes, we'll focus on what he said about the future. He didn't mention specific teams, but he did say that the phone has been ringing.

"In all honesty, I don't know," he said. "I was let go on Monday, and today's Friday and I am very blessed in this way. The phone has been ringing. There has been contact (from several teams), but I have asked that everyone respect the fact that I need some time to figure out what I want to do next, and so far, everyone has."

He also said that he won't be taking a year off and will be working next season.

"There are two extremes for what I'd ultimately like to do, and a lot of possibilities in between," he said. "The extremes are (1) sitting out a year, or (2) getting another head coaching job. One is realistic, the other probably isn't very realistic. No one has asked me to be a head coach yet and I'm not saying that is going to happen. But everything in between - like being a coordinator again, or maybe a position coach - yeah, those are both realistic possibilities. Would I think about a college job? No. I love this league too much."

So, if Andy Reid wants him, it just comes down to recruiting him. He wants to coach and he'll have options.

I think we're all getting our hopes up way too high

There are a lot of teams that want Steve Spagnuolo as part of their staff next year. Discounting the 12 playoff teams, there are 20 teams including the Eagles that probably need to fix some part of their defense next year. Teams like the Jaguars, Chiefs, Dolphins, Chargers, etc. all have defensive coaching vacancies and will want to go after a coach with Super Bowl credentials. Its going to be extremely difficult to get what would seem to be the cream of the crop in terms of defensive coaching talent this year.

Not really...

Just look at the talent on our defense. Who wouldn’t want to work with Babin, Cole, Jenkins, Nnamdi, and DRC. Not to mention the young talent we have like Rolle, Allen, and Graham. The only detractor we have is Washburn and our LBs and Safties.

I'm great like Gatsby.

It comes down to money and the right situation

I doubt that Spagnuolo is bitter about the Minnesota fiasco when he could have gone to coach the defense but the job was given to Mike Tomlin instead. He was able to accept a role as defensive coordinator with the Giants and later HC with the Rams, and I’m sure he’s extremely grateful for being a part of the Eagles as it gave him those opportunities. Spags is a man of faith and forgiveness and I’m sure he holds no grudges towards this franchise.

However, the Eagles need to work fast. He’s getting calls like crazy. Meanwhile, Juan is still our defensive coordinator. I would seriously expect there to be big firings tomorrow on Monday, and would not be surprised if Juan doesn’t have a job tomorrow evening.

The Giants would probably welcome him back with warm arms

If I were him why wouldn’t I go back to where I already won 1 ring?

by BrandonB on Jan 8, 2012 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Because the eagles are much closer to winning the big one then the giants at this point if we can fix our defensive woes.

by Doug_M on Jan 8, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

lol…is that right

by BrandonB on Jan 8, 2012 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

The Eagles definitely have more defensive talent than the Giants

And I’d argue that the offense is pretty similar in talent level when everyone is healthy. We have a better O-line, better RB and arguably better TEs. Giants have a better QB (based on this season) and probably better WRs (again, based on this season).

by deg0ey on Jan 8, 2012 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

You have to look at personel for his scheme

Do the Giants have better defensive talent to have immediate success in his scheme? I would wager not.

by BrandonB on Jan 8, 2012 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

deg0ey essentially said what i ment to say, I also believe that if spags is the saviour that most of us believe him to be, he will be able to take advantage of the talent we have and make the best of it.

by Doug_M on Jan 8, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

dont worry about it, Fewell isn't going anywhere

Even though it would kill me, I wouldn’t mind having Spags back in the division with the Eagles. The more the merrier.

Go Giants!

Are you sure you know what the “big one” is?

by waterfield on Jan 9, 2012 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

Well, the Eagles are sitting at home right now while the Giants are preparing for the divisional round, so I think it’s safe to say they’re closer to winning the big one right now.

I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.

by Avant-Garde on Jan 9, 2012 10:10 AM EST up reply actions

Perry Fewell is still a pretty good coach

They’re not going to fire him unless the Giants defense lays a huge egg against Atlanta tonight. They had a lot of injuries this year (they were 7th in total defense in 2010) and Fewell usually does a pretty good job with that unit.

I think people are not realizing the complexities of bring back Spags.

From Andy’s perspective he may have 1 offseason left before he is canned. Does Andy bring back Spags and possibly scrap the wide 9 and Washburn thus forcing the D to undergo another scheme change his last crack at it or does he just sink with the Juan/Wash ship?

From Spags perspective, does he want to go into a possible lame duck situation where a one year failure means his head coach is fired?

by BrandonB on Jan 8, 2012 11:56 AM EST reply actions

Reid

If he does a good enough job and Andy gets fired after the year then spags would have just as good a shot to get the HC job as anyone else

by eagles0133 on Jan 8, 2012 12:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

As he could as a DC on any team. He doesn’t need to be the DC of the Eagles to be considered for the HC job of the Eagles.

by BrandonB on Jan 8, 2012 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

Out of all the non-playoff teams, Philadelphia seems like the safest situation

I’m not saying that Andy’s job is secured after next season. Anything short of a NFC championship appearance and Andy’s job could be on the line. But I think Spagnuolo knows he can work in a system he’s familiar with and bring great success to the defensive side of the ball, and give the Eagles a solid shot at winning a Super Bowl next year.

by postman856 on Jan 8, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Spags will make his decision based on 1 year.

Your Forgetting America's TEAM!

great coach! Amazing QB! Amazing talent on the Defence, just lacking some leadership. Ol’ Rob got his momma’s talent for eathin and not his daddys leadership abilities…

Sink with the Juan/Wash ship

or just keep being fine on it and hoping the offense learns to not turn the ball over 50 times?

Nope.

by bigmeanie08 on Jan 8, 2012 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

Yes that is best-case scenario (and is probably more likely). I was assuming worst-case scenario. This defense was built to protect an early lead provided by an explosive quick strike offense. The opposing team would be forced to abandon the run quickly, playing right into the hands of the wide-9 and our corners. That won’t happen if the offense turns over the ball aka the first 12 games. It did happen the last 4 games.

by BrandonB on Jan 8, 2012 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

Jack Del Rio

Prediction: the 3-4 will be out of style in two years.
So no, I will not shut up about stupidity.

I like Del Rio

How do you think his defense would work with Washburns wide 9?

I grew up in Pa. but my job has taken me deep into the swamps of louisiana where all you here is "who dat, who dat" and on clear nights when the wind is gently blowing from the northwest you can hear the wimpers and sobs of jerry and his herd of cowgirls.

by eagleflownsouth on Jan 8, 2012 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Del Rio as LB coach

would be awesome. Not so much as DC. I want Spags.

Crush them, my Birds!!! CRUSH THEM!!!!!!!!!

I wish Andy locked him up early like those rumors suggested. Now teams will be lined up around the block for him. I wouldn’t be surprised to soon hear that the Falcons are jumping into the Spags sweepstakes after the shitty performance they turned out today.

Keep Andy!

by mvict on Jan 8, 2012 3:43 PM EST reply actions

Spags obviously doesn’t want to make a decision yet on any team though,as all the recent news/articles have indicated. Who knows when we’ll find out where he goes.

Who cares what he wants? Hasn’t Andy ever heard of hired goons?

We need to look into more options than Spags

Watch this man get a better offer for another team. The good news is that we have so much talent on D# that we only need an average D-cord. Juan was just plain awful, I would love to see how good Casey Matthews really is. Can we draft 1st round LB’s? yes!
But understand until you have a good coach you should not get rid of the talent you already have. Babin is proof, we said he was trash and we sent him off next thing you know we wanted him back. If we keep Washburns technique then I think we are going to need Boston College’s Luke Kuechly, but if we get rid of Washburn than I would love for us to get the next Ray Lewis, Vontaze Burfict.

by EaglesNeedD on Jan 8, 2012 5:00 PM EST reply actions

Unless he gets another HC job, what would be better then a DC/assistant position by the Eagles?
Also no matter what defense we are going to play, Burfict is a no go. He got benched for making to many mistakes, is that really someone you want on your team?

by Anders Jensen on Jan 9, 2012 6:02 AM EST up reply actions

It depends if you think you can coach the mistakes out of him

He’s a great talent, it’s just a matter of transferring that to the field (kinda like DeSean). He’s got 1st round talent but will slide into the 2nd or 3rd because of his attitude (kinda like DeSean) but could end up being a great weapon for somebody that’s willing to put the work in with him.

by deg0ey on Jan 9, 2012 9:00 AM EST up reply actions

So what do you know about Vontaze (sp?) that leads you to compare him to DeSean?
Jackson hasn’t had any problem transferring his talent to the field, has he? He has been a little too exuberant after good plays, but no more often than a slew of other players are every week.

Sounds like the other guy has 1st round muscles and a get the fuck off my property character, although I must say, that musical introduction to his highlights video was super scary. Bet if LeSean McCoy heard it he would quake in his boots and piss in his pants.

by waterfield on Jan 9, 2012 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

*shrug*

Just a thought really…Burfict seems like the kind of guy that loses focus and doesn’t always play as hard as he possibly can – and the same could be said for Jackson.

Maybe I’m being a little harsh on DeSean, but it seems like there’s at least a passing similarity there.

How about

Island hopping in the South Pacific?

by waterfield on Jan 9, 2012 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

There’s a big difference between a college coach who got fired for not controlling his players and a Super Bowl winning DC. Considering he started from his first year, it’s clear he’s never had a talented veteran to talk to him either. His college teammates were in no position to control him, but do you think Jenkins, Cole, Nnamdi, etc. would let him run wild? It’s far too early to write him off as a head-case, and if he’s available in the second round I think he’d be a great pick (especially if Keuchly’s gone in the first).

I'll give you a cookie if you know what my pic is from.
