Making me feel oooold

That was my team when I was a kid. It was great. Every single defensive play had the potential to be a career highlight.

We had total confidence on goal line stands and two minute drills that our D would stop the other team.

When Randall went down in ‘91 it became my worst Eagle memory because that was finally going to be the year would won. (At least that’s what I thought)

excuse me? slow your role internet tough guy...

“it’s only gonna get better” is a phrase usually used when things are going good, and to paint a picture that “wow” things are only gonna get better than they are now. A phrase that could have been used after the end of last season, not really appropriate after a disappointing season… You obviously don’t understand what the guy was trying to say, I did. Go throw insults around like a child somewhere else.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

I'm not the one that nitpicked first off...nor did i say it wasn't..

I just understood what the dude was trying to say…wtf are both of you talking about…respond to that dude, not me. “don’t nitpick” would be a better response to what the guy said than “what” “shut up” “you have no idea what you’re talking about”….or asking me if wear a helmet….how bout that?…

The guy isn’t all wrong, and yes you can consider what he’s say nitpicking…I swear most of you people around here argue for the sake of arguing, and try to prove you’re smarter than someone you’re responding to on the internet. That’s why the people that used to be here, who you guys probably don’t know, aren’t here anymore.

he got all negative responses...

I was saying to the guy that I understood what he was getting at. I’ll admit i read it a couple times and than had to go back and see what Vick said…

I didn’t think of that he might just be talking about the last 4 games of the season, that’s a good point. There’s no need to be entirely negative and jump on people. The season just ended and people are pissed at how it went, people deal w/ it how they want. I didn’t feel the need to say anything about his negativity or nitpicking. Go look at djacks post, and you’ll find my responses, they’ll be the ones that are green and rec’d.

The full quote to provide some context

FTFA:

We know what we have here and it’s only going to get better, and we’re going to work as hard as we can, because we owe this city a lot, and we owe this organization a lot as players and I fully take on that responsibility and every guy in this locker room does as well.

Without proper context, the headline can come off as a bit arrogant. Taking it as part of a much larger quote, I think those six words pale in comparison to:

….we’re going to work as hard as we can…
I hope so, but thank you for saying it out loud.
…we owe this city a lot…
Yes, you do. Especially you, Michael Vick.
…we owe this organization a lot…
Yes, you do. Especially you, Michael Vick.
…I fully take on that responsibility and every guy in this locker room does as well.
This statement is what I like to hear from my starting QB. Responsibility and leadership in one shot. I never expected to hear this sort of thing from Vick 3 years ago. And I understand where people were coming from when they complained about McNabb’s lack of leadership. I love what Donny did here, but Vick seems to be a much better locker room leader.

by ProtoTyler on Jan 6, 2012 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

The defense was built for us to have an early lead with our high-powered offense. I imagine when constructing the team last year Andy and co. envisioned our explosive offense striking quickly with a lead forcing the opposing offense to abandon the run early and play right into the hands of the wide-nine and our playmaking corners. This didn’t happen the first 12 games. It did seem to happen the last 4 games.

Diddy’s my favorite Eagles writer of all time, but he and Baldy served up a hot bowl of nonsense here. The Eagles played far better in the final 4 games than they did the rest of the season. I mean… they only outgained their last 4 opponents 125-46, but let’s nitpick Nate Allen.

by JimmyK on Jan 6, 2012 8:55 AM EST up reply actions   2 recs

the point is the fundamentals were lacking again

The tackling is still the problem. Is that a skill set that dramatically improves over a career? Usually a soft tackler is one for life. I think all the success at the end of the year may trick this team into thinking they can build their house on a sandy foundation. No scheme can overcome poor tackling.

by moondogger on Jan 6, 2012 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

Poor tackling is less of a problem when you force an offense to become one-dimensional and only pass against you by building a big lead early in the game.

by BrandonB on Jan 6, 2012 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Tackling was most definitely improved too. They were largely noting that one play by Royster.

by JimmyK on Jan 6, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

Most defuinitely improved tackling, maybe.

Take that play away and the ’Skins backs only got 24 for 102 rushing, 34 for 234 total.

if the Eagles had a few breaks in the first half of the year, they would have looked as good then as they did in the second half: the last 4 games weren’t the fluke, the first 5 were :)

We lost to the Falcons by 4 when Juan didn’t have a clue what he was doing on defense & didn’t have Mike Vick for the whole 4th quarter & we should of still won that game if it wasn’t for a bullshit interception that was rewarded to the Falcons.

I used to have respect for Didinger but this year he’s just came off as a grumpy old man stuck in the 60s. It seems like all he fucking whines about is Andy & Marty not running the ball when we lose, guess what we were 5th in the league in rushing this year even if we weren’t he should know that this is a passing league now. Everybody’s 3 favorites for the Super Bowl it seems like is the Saints, the Patriots, & the Packers, guess which 3 teams led the league in passing this year?

Royster had a 28-yard run up the middle on which four Eagles – safety Jaiquawn Jarrett, linebacker Brian Rolle, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and nickel back Joselio Hanson – all missed tackles. In fact, no one tackled him. Royster stumbled and fell or he may have gone the distance.

Washington’s only touchdown came on a screen pass from Rex Grossman to rookie running back Roy Helu. On the play, Rolle and middle linebacker Casey Matthews tripped over each other, safety Nate Allen ran right into tackle Willie Smith to take himself out of the play, Hanson slipped and fell and Asomugha was unable to shed the block of receiver Donte’ Stallworth.

Really can’t say for sure….as it didnt happen…..

Ive seen this team dominate just as many times as they fucked up this year….could have gone either way really…

Well I’ve seen this team dominate in the last 4 weeks of the season. That is more relevant to gauge what to expect tgoing forward hen what they did early in the season.

by BrandonB on Jan 6, 2012 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

It offers evidence that they haven't.

What evidence do you have that they have closed the gap?
Do you even think there is a gap?

by waterfield on Jan 6, 2012 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

Like Jeff Lurie pointed we just don’t know. We don’t know how good this team is right now. Maybe we could have gone on an epic run like the ‘07 Giants or maybe we would have been smoked in the first round. There’s just no way to know until next year, which sucks.

by BrandonB on Jan 6, 2012 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

They didn’t beat up on Ryan Fitzpatrick, Alex Smith, John Skelton and Tarvaris Jackson earlier in the season. Now, the statement you pointed out…

It does not prove they have closed the gap on the top teams and that’s how the Eagles should be measuring themselves

That may very well be true. It’s tough to judge, really. The Eagles spanked their last four opponents. It would have been nice to have seen at least one or two of those teams playing with a good QB. But the fact remains they still smoked the competition with which they were presented… something they weren’t doing earlier in the season. To say they didn’t improve is nonsense.

I didnt say or agreed with the fact that they didnt improve or not. Its hard not to improve from 5 4th quarter blown leads with as much talented players as they have. To improve from shit isnt something to be too excited about. Its not as if this was a 1-15 team for the past 10 seasons.

Until they beat a few top tier teams , consistently….i could care less if they are “getting closer to being a top tier team”…

It depends on how you define improved.

AR should have to wear a Flava Flav necklace until he learns how to manage a clock.

By now, I would think Didinger might know this:

the Eagles are not telling the public at large what they “measured”.
They are making a sales pitch.

They are not scientists, they are businessmen.

Then again, maybe he does know it, just doesn’t want to mention it.

WTF

Did Andre Waters die for our entertainment?????He died for a paycheck.

Do coalminers die bc they are martyrs to make fossil fuel?
Do the crabers on risk their lives bc they really care if you eat crab?
Do construction workers on high rises really care about the guys who will be working in the building?

It’s job and it pays you money. You know the risk and you don’t care because the means justify the end.

At least one more year of Andy and Juan. If they don't win it all they both better be gone!

I agree

plus, he loved playing the game. When these guys get injured and tough it out to get back on the field, they’re doing it because they’re fierce competitors and they want to earn their money. They also do it to support their teammates, just like soliders will put their lives on the line for their squadmates.

exactly!

who was to blame? 5 1/2 losses on the d. 1 on vick turnovers.

1. atlanta. defense gives up sizable fourth quarter lead after vick is concussed.DEFENSE TO BLAME.
2. giants. defense gives up 2 point lead after vick is again injured. DEFENSE TO BLAME
3. san fran. ronnie brown, alex henry. and defense again gives up multiple late td drives. and then maclin fumbles a last drive away. which reminds me that he did the same thing in atlanta. KICKER AND DEFENSE TO BLAME.
4.buffalo. the one game lost because of too many vick ints. d gave up alot of points. VICK AND DEFENSE TO BLAME.
5. arizona. desean sat out. vick lost this one by not removing himself after his injury. and then lady luck did help the cardinals a little on those tipped balls tds. VICK AND DESEAN TO BLAME.
6. chicago. desean’s punt fumble and the roughing the passer call on babin. DESEAN AND THE REFS TO BLAME.
7. new england. this was on the d. vick didn’t play. DEFENSE TO BLAME.
8. seattle. i didn’t even watch. vick didn’t play. DEFENSE TO BLAME.

i disagree that the end of the season did not show progress

the big weakness was clearly the shabby tackling of the linebackers and secondary. they lost 5 1/2 games this year. but they definitely improved in the last four games against middle of the road teams. the selective focus on the redskin game by baldinger is selective in focusing on just one game, selected plays in that game, and ignoring other evidence. the d gave up very little yardage and low point total across four games. the opponents were neither great or terrible.

by andyfrombrooklyn on Jan 6, 2012 12:36 PM EST reply actions

if i was vick's coach, i would say this....

you need to stay healthy. throw it away when the play is not there. you are getting injured in the pocket when you hold on to the ball too long.
when you want to run, just do it.
remember game situation. do not turn it over unnecessarily like you did with fumble against the redskins before the half up by 10.
do not try to win every game on your own. you can’t. it doesn’t work like that.

Meaningless

Any real analysis of the last 2 games and how the ‘defense improved’ in 2 games that meant nothing – especially the ’Boys game.

I've always liked Didinger...

but he has become one of the drivers of the Anti Reid bus. Although i agree with a lot of what Ray has to say, I no longer see his statements/articles as objective reporting. And nor should I, he gets paid to give his opinion and his opinion is that Reid sucks.

I'm not drunk I'm just drinking.

They should have had a shutout

against the Skins and the Cowgirls. Lets say they got to round 2 and ended up playing the Saints, they wouldnt be able to hang with Brees for a shootout. This was not the Eagles year and the org needs to stop pretending that all is kosher (no hebrew)

by green on Jan 6, 2012 3:13 PM EST reply actions

The Eagles

are going to get EXPOSED next year when they have to play the AFC North and NFC South unless there are drastic improvements on both offense and defense.

Prediction: the 3-4 will be out of style in two years.
So no, I will not shut up about stupidity.
