All signs point to Eagles' replacing Castillo
Andy Reid, Jeffrey Lurie and several players still haven't backed Juan Castillo and it looks like he won't be back as defensive coordinator.

I don’t know if he’s coming back or not but I feel he missed being more involved as a signal caller
And that’s why we can’t judge his tenure with the Rams to his tenure as a defensive coordinator.

Well, Castillo did play LB. Not sure that he would be an upgrade over Caldwell though.
Could they possibly be waiting on Washburn. Juan should know how to attack an offensive line.
I feel Castillo should stay, just not as the DC. He hasn’t necessarily done anything to get him fired from the team.

That’s nice that Reid tries to do that for guys, did it for McD as well, but that’s not really his obligation either. Not the mark of an arrogant man in my opinion.

@ LB artical
Good players don’t give you reasons to take them out. They don’t blow coverages they don’t miss easy tackles, they don’t miss reads in short they do their jobs. Over the last 5 years all we’ve seen out of our LB corps is flashes of greatness and a ton of ineptitude.
So now that we’ve found something that doesn’t make me want to replace the LBers with a sofa (someone may accidentally trip over a sofa) isn’t a tell all that we don’t need to address a serious team need with some big time talent.
Mocking the draft did a piece on the draft position of each player broken down by position. What stuck out to me was that you can find players all over but, not the LB position. Every Probowl LBer was taken with a first round pick. That tells me that if they have the tools to be a top tier talent than it shows at the collegiate level. I’m not saying you can’t get good guys later but, I’m tired of waiting to see if one pans out.
"Learning to eat soup with a knife"
Did they report on how many of those picks were busts? I remember a certain high first round OLB out of Wake Forest who could jump out of pools really well…but not much else. Was it better or worse than 35%?

Found something
Ted Kluck (?) wrote and article for ESPN back in 2007 (thank you, Google) on the NFL draft. The short of it: first round LBs have a 16% chance to bust and a 36% chance to make the pro-bowl (whatever that means.) This was back in ’07, so the numbers may have drifted a bit.

There is pretty much zero reason for Reid to hurry
no matter what he decides. If he intends to keep Juan, waiting will only help the passions to die down, and he can announce after careful consideration, blah blah blah, top 10 defense, blah blah blah, you get the idea. If he intends to let him go, there’s little reason to announce that, especially if he intends to hire a coach still active (say the Balitmore LB coach or whomever).
"Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body."

The longer he waits, the more likely a spot that Juan could have filled somewhere else gets taken and the more likely the best candidates to replace him are hired somewhere else.

Disagree
If Reid knows what he is going to do (and I think that he does), I can think of no one who will benefit from waiting to find out, not the owner, not the other coaches, not the players, and not the fans.
If he was going to keep Castillo I think that we would have heard it by now. Like I said above, I think that it is quite possible that the delay is because Reid is trying find a landing spot for him. They have had a good relationship and Reid probably feels responsible for putting Castillo in this position (and I think that he does carry lots of the blame).
Go Eagles!
He could be waiting to have a new DC in hand.

Possibly
But I am not sure that it is Reid’s style to try to fill a position that he hasn’t officially announced as vacant. I think that he respects Castillo too much to do that.
Go Eagles!
I agree with a lot of the comments here, but by not declaring the position open, juan is possibly missing out on opportunities elsewhere. Andy doesnt need to find a place for him, but a recommendation wouldnt hurt.

Is that he may have his eye on 1 or 2 guys from playoff teams and isnt able to talk to them yet.

But what if that does not pan out? Then we’re back to the same thing as last year, meaning “We couldn’t find anyone, so we’ll just keep Juan”.
Regardless of who you are looking at to bring in, to me if you have made the decision to let Castillo go it doesn’t make any sense to delay announcing it.
Go Eagles!
What if it doesnt pan out? Well what if we can Juan, and it still doesnt pan out? No difference. Point is, they can retain Juan as long as they want because he is under contract. If he is their Plan B, C, or even D, there is no reason to make the move until you know about your first options.
Getting rid of Juan only makes sense if they feel they have a more viable option. So until they know they have that opportunity, why release Juan?

I see where you are going with this but...
So until they know they have that opportunity, why release Juan?
I just don’t see it as Reid’s style to bring in guys to interview for a spot that he has not vacated yet. So what to you say to Juan? “We’re bringing guys in to interview for your job. If nothing pans out, you get another shot.”
I just don’t see Reid doing that. Just my opinion.
Go Eagles!
I see what you’re saying, but i think there is a lot that goes on that never really makes it to the surface too. Andy has been in the league a long time and i wouldnt be surprised to know that his cell phone was filled with personal cell numbers of some of the guys he may be considering.
Would he officially interview someone to replace a spot that hasnt been vacated? Likely not. Would he call someone and gage interest? I dont know.
Either way…Juan is still our DC right now, and I havent yet found a better explantion as to why they wouldnt have let him go yet, IF they had already made up their minds.

And to go one step further, Juan may already have been demoted to a different role with the team for all we know.
Either he’s:
A. Staying and its already decided.
B. A backup plan just dangling in the wind.
C. Already demoted and we just dont know it.

That Reid has already had a conversation with Castillo and both are keeping quiet about it. That works in that Reid may not have his plans completely finalized but is showing respect to Castillo.

Juan: That sucks.
Andy: Yea. But we would like to keep you on board. You’re a helluva guy.
Juan: Thanks. What role would you retain me in?
Andy: Not sure yet. We have a few names we intend to interview. We arent going to announce anything yet so just sit tight. I need to put you in a better position to succeed.

Can Juan Castillo really put together a defense that can at least keep us in the game against the great passing teams like Green Bay, New Orleans, and New England? I don’t think he can especially with one year of experience with a team that is “all in”.
I mean he thought he could just come in and switch up the safety positions and the OLB spots like they don’t have specific roles. What kind of adjustments would he make against an elite QB?
Well, we'll see who will win the SB
but the defenses of the Saints, the Packers and the Pats suck against the pass. And they still win. We forget how our offense suck this year. And I can’t see how changing our DC will decrease the turnovers of the offense.

Most good teams have terrible pass defenses
Why? Because the teams they play are playing catch up ball. Catch up ball means passing. The nfl has decided to make it impossible to stop the passing game unless you can sack the qb or intercept the ball. But even then, if you hit a star too hard that’s a flag.

Roethlisberger will play.
MEndenhall is a blow, but I don’t think you’ll see a huge dropoff to Redman.
As far as I know Polamalu is fine. Although they will be without Ryan Clark, who can’t play at altitude. And Ike Taylor is a really good corner.

could taht be an argument as to why OUR defense was bad this year?
we did blow a lot of 4th quarter leads – that tells you we were ahead and the other teams had to play catch up.

I can see value in having him on board as an assistant or something, but his inexperience at play calling is just too much of a gamble. He just hasnt seen enough plays, or reacted/adjusted to them….The Eagles can’t lose another 3-4 games next year dude to his inability to adjusts accordingly during games.

Well, they would have all of offseason with a coach that presumably has experience in whichever scheme he wants to implement. The thing with Castillo is he has no idea how opposing offenses will react to his shceme, and also how he will react to what they throw at him. We have already heard that the Eagles want some type of JJ Defense with the staff they currently have. So bringing in a guy like Spags would make sense to me in that instance, since he already has experience with a particular type of Defense. Playcalling is a huge part of a DC’s job. You can have a great scheme in place, but if you dont make the right calls at the right times, it can blow up in your face quickly…..especially when your players question your calls..

I would agree with you on everything if it wasn’t for those last 4 games. The Eagles defense really did look strong the last month. I mean the games were not even close at all, just domination. Maybe Juan and Washburn were really starting to get the hang of it with the wide-nine?
Here is the way I see it though. NFL coaching positions require a certain amount of experience right? Otherwise, any BGNers could coach an NFL team or run an NFL system. Scary thought right? How is it that a guy, with basically no NFL Defensive play calling experience, gets a job doing exactly that? Even if the D played well in 4 games….does that mean he now has the experience level of a 10 year playcaller? Or at least someone whos been around a defenseive system for 5-10 years?
Its just way too much to gamble with. Its just not enough….theres a reason these guys are getting paid good money for what they do….they have years and years of experience…
How can a guy with 1 year of experience on Defense compete with one who has 20? To me its not enough….Would you not trust a 10 year veteran firefighter to save your life over a rookie? Even if that rookie is say, physically talentd or something…. I dunno…. but these DC jobs are given to people with Defensive shceme experience for a reason….and when someone goes out of the norm to get a chance at something most people wouldnt get the chance to do, he better excel! The margin for error dramatically decreases….and in Juan’s case….it just isnt enough….

The question may not as simple as Juan vs Any other DC (taking Spags for instance). It may be: Juan/Washburn/wide-nine vs new DC/no Washburn/no wide-nine, in which case the answer is not as obvious.

that LB article is eye opening
What a nightmare. And they “Stay or Go” article is just retarded. Chad Hall actually got more votes to stay than leave. gtfo. And Juan’s out or demoted for sure. No way he stays after the way laurie talked about him yesterday. Even if it is up to Andy, he knows bossman is upset and wants to fix his fuck up.
i agree Juan is gone.
If we are to be SB or bust (again) next year, is Juan the guy that can make that happen, or would Spags give us a better chance. I think the obvious choice is Spags. Not to say Juan wont be a servicable or decent DC, but Spags will be GOOD or GREAT.

And there’s a chance that if the Eagles do indeed replace Castillo, it would mean the end of the line for defensive line coach Jim Washburn and his "wide nine" formation.
again i really dont understand why beat writers and “football experts” keep saying things like this. Its really starting to piss me off now, anywhere people talk about a new Defensive Coordinator, people keep saying crap like this. There is no reason a DC could not incorporate the wide 9 technique into their system, because again its just a technique that the DE’s lineup in. it doesnt stop us from using blitzes and what not. these people need to to get some facts before they open their stupid mouths!!!

I think it's valid
Especially if it’s Spags. He employs a blitzing philosophy. It’s the JJ style, you never know the pressure is coming from.
He may not feel like the wide nine, which is geared toward getting pressure with the ends and not blitzing, fits his philosophy. And in the end, if you hire the guy because you think he’s the best defensive mind you can get, why wouldn’t you want to let him shape the defense how he sees fit?

To top it off....
Keep in mind that our schedule has (5) play-off teams, that’s 5 means we ain’t gonna be last. 2011 we were last, when Redskins were doing good and we ended up 2nd at season’s end. Next season I don’t want to be sitting on the buttom at any given time, so we really need to think about those (5) play-off teams and be ready and capable to truncate the odds out.
