Juan man doesn't deserve all the blame
I kno this will probably start a BGN riot but, I agree with bringing Juan back. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to have had Spags and maybe get that Jim Johnson head hunting type defense back. But when Spags wasn't out there anymore we really didn't have a better option than Juan. I feel the best option was to keep the scheme we have add talent at linebacker and get the best db coach possible to maximize the talent we have in the secondary. That being said, the Todd Bowles signing was perfect.
Juan wasn't as horrible as everyone is making him out to be. Actually he did a very decent job for a first year coach.
Here are some eagles defensive rankings:
9th- Opp first Downs per game
9th- Opp Completion %
10th- Opp Completion per game
10th- Opp Pass yards per game
8th- Opp Total Yards per Game
10th- Opp points per game
1st- Sacks per game and total sacks
Not bad for a first year coach to be in the top ten in all those major stats. Especially with all he had against him:
First year coach
A lock out
New Coach staff
Offense near the top in turnovers (what was it 36).
A offense that leaves a ton of points on the field by settling for fieldgoals instead of scoring tds in the redzone.
The worst group of linebackers in the National Football league.
Safety play was terrible most of the season. Hell, Jarrad Page was probably the worst takler I've ever seen and he was a starter at the beginning of the season. Thats saying alot about the rest of them.
And Juan just thought way too much of Nnamdi. Trying to turn him into a Woodson Hybrid Type player in one season. Towards the end of the season he figured out how to use him.
I honestly think this will be a turnaround year for this defense. No one has called out New England or Green Bay's defensive coordinators. Those teams played terrible defense all yearand were stay considered favorites to win it all. The major difference is that their offenses didn't leave points in the redzone as often as we did or turnover the ball twice a game. Our -14 turnover differential was the key factor to this disappointing season. I have faith that Andy knows what he is doing and will get this thing worked out.

You just summed up all my thoughts about this defense concisely, well done. I’m not sure I’d keep the safety thing there, though, as that could be blamed on Castillo too, although I think youth was the bigger issue.

I agree 100%
too easy to lay the blame on the new guy…
but the facts just do not support it.
Those fourth quarter losses? They are as much a fault of an offense going ice cold as they are a defense getting soft.
The losses where we had the lead? remove the turnovers and we win virtually all of them.
I’m okay with bringing Castillo back. I love the wide 9. I love the DL washburn has created.
I think the pain of 2011 puts a fire in these guys this year…
Andy under fire is Andy coaching at his best….
Don’t believe me? Coughlin is nearly the same. The playoff runs from coughlin occur in the years where fans are calling for his head on a platter.

The defense we saw at the end of the year — especially the weird looks, was really intriguing. Hopefully we have something here. Regardless, you gotta love the sacks at least.

Not even close. 49ers led the league with 38, the NFL average was 25.3, and the Eagles had 24 (17th in league).

Think he meant offensive turnovers, and he meant 2nd worst. In which case he is close, but not quite right.

The 2011 Eagles ranked T18th in defensive turnovers, T29th in turnover differential. Yikes.
Only 8 teams turned the ball over 30+ times. The Eagles were second on that list with 38, with only TB’s 40 beating them.

I agree with with this too, but it also has to be mentioned that the Eagles defense didn’t do a good job of getting off the field in the forth quarter. I haven’t done the research but I bet the defense allowed an obscene amount of 3rd down conversions late in games. They need to stop with the stupid mistakes on 3rd downs. With that in mind the offense also had a bunch of penalties in the redzone (holding/offsides) that killed drives. Everyone needs to just clean up their play and this will be a much improved team.

The defense was very affected by the offense
The offense had 38 turnovers…. The second most in the league. That’s over two offensive turnovers a game. No defense is going to match that in forced turnovers.
There were plenty of problems throughout the whole team last year.
Dropped balls, poor tackling, fumbles, bad play calling (offense and defense) bad kick returner, 3rd downs, lockout, contracts, trade rumors, DREAM TEAM!!, ect… This year there should be no destractions. We will either have Desean or not, have Asante or not. Castillo will have plenty of time to get ready for the season.
Everybody knows whats at stake if we dont make a deep playoff run or a superbowl. Everyone in the organization has done good at taking responsibility and not throwing anyone under the bus, but hopefully they start fixing the mistakes instead of just owning up to them.
Whos your Daddy?
Having said that...
Im sure Castillo will be better than last year, I just dont know how good that will be.
Whos your Daddy?
top options for draft pick15
1. Quinton Coples 6’6 285(pure beast)
2. Luke Kuechly (only if we don’t get mlb in free agency)
3. Zack brown (great in coverage, tackling a ?
4. Devon stills ( deep at DT but washburn would turn this guy into a beast
we are in a great position going into the draft this year. We cant go wrong with any of this guys. We are jus a few pieces away from having a hell of a defense. No way Juan can fuck this up
We need MLB, SAM, competition at SS and you can never have too many pass rushers.
agree with all of them
except Stills. I like Brockers better.

we'd probably
have to trade up for Coples. I mean if he falls to us, him or Kuechley (if he makes it to us) would both be nice picks.

You apologists make me sick.
He is juan of the worst coaches in the NFL and doesn’t deserve a job in the CFL, much less the NFL
The bad news? Castillo's back.
The good news? With the 7-9 season coming up and all the Eagles games being played at 1:00 (and in the bag for the opponent by 2:30 at the latest), we'll all have plenty of time to rake the leaves and whack off. Stock up on your Astro Glide, ladies!

You pessimist make me sick
don’t understand how you consider him one of the worst coaches in the nfl after 1 season. He was in the top ten in point allowed and yards. the defense finished strong and showed it can be dominate at times. They completely shut down the NFC champs in a game that sorry ass Vince Young threw not 1 not 2 but 3 Interceptions.

So he had a top 10 defense
Does that make him a top 10 dcoordinator? No. We were all expecting easily a top 5 defense this year, a top 10 defense was a failure. No he wasn’t as big of a failure as some think, but he was a failure none the less. We are superbowl worthy team, an 8-8 season with a defense that immensely failed expectations is not cause for optimism.
Me Gusta Los Eagles
lol
ignorant people that bought in2 all that dream team nonsense thought they would be a top 5 defense. A defense can’t go from how bad they were in 2010 to top 5 in one year Dude. especially with 7 no starter a new scheme and the no offseason. That common sense
2010 Texans: 30th in yards, 29th in points
2011 Texans: 2nd in yards, 4th in points

Texans even switched to the 34
All of the new starters were upgrades over the 2010 team with the one exception being that the SS from Mikell leaving. You act like the the Eagles were the only team to switch schemes during last offseason.
Me Gusta Los Eagles
2010 Texans: Frank Bush, Defensive Coordinator
2011 Texans: Wade Phillips, Defensive Coordinator.

by UnclaimedFright on Feb 3, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions
what made you expect a top-5 defense?
was it the lockout? or the new coordinator? or all the new pieces? or our fabulous linebacking corps?
if you expected a top-5 defense, you just had unrealistic expectations from the get-go and wouldn’t have been satisfied with nearly any result.
Lockout? All 32 teams had lockouts. New Coordinator? The 49ers and Texans both implemented new schemes and were both tops in defense. New Pieces? You mean the All-Pro CB, DT, DE that we added and another probowl corner, not to mention the jump that is expected from all those 2nd year defensive players. Fabulous linebacking? It wasn’t on Juan starting Casey Mathews originally, switching linebackers around every game? I easily would have been satisfied with a legit top 10 defense that was not just bolstered by a shallacking of 4 awful team at the end of the year. We had a joke of a schedule and the defense still looked crappy.
Me Gusta Los Eagles
but why a top-5 defense?
we were #12 overall in 2010, 14th against the pass, 15th against the run, 21st in scoring defense (overall), 25th in touchdown scoring defense, and dead last in tackles.
what of that made you think we’d be a top-5 D this year?
The "comparison" to 49ers and Texans is hardly an apples to apples...
The 49ers took great care to ‘dummy down’ the playbook, not strip the basic techniques employed…
And as far as the wade phillips 3-4 implementation at houston, do you really mean to tell me that wade had just as many moving pieces?
Let’s recap: Eagles – New DL techniques, New “W9” formation, 3 new DL, 2 new CBs, 3 new (face or position) LB’s, 2 PT safeties upgraded to FT…
You want to tell me that the 49ers and the Texans had that many changes in their defenses?
Sorry. You have any other used cars on the lot? I’m not buying that one…
by milroyigglesfan on Feb 1, 2012 8:30 PM EST up reply actions
Texans didn’t make as many changes?
Let’s see… Mario Williams had to change from DE to OLB (who then got injured, without the defense faltering mind you), Brian Cushing change from 4-3 OLB to 3-4 ILB, two new defensive line starters, two new OLB starter (one to replace Williams), a new CB, and a new FS. Oh, and everyone else in the front four from last year that didn’t get moved around had to learn how to play 3-4 style of defensive line/linebacker on the fly.
If the Texans didn’t made more changes than the Eagles, they certainly made just as many.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Last time I checked...
There are three litmus tests for the eagles:
Win the division – failed
Be in the conversation for playoffs – well, we were in the conversation to an extent
Sweep the cowboys – A+ here
I get that the ESPN pundits put the Eagles on a pedestal, and then screamed “worst disappointing team ever” when they looked awfully stupid…
But you take the 11-5 cowboys of 2009 to 6-10 of 2010… compare that to the 2010 eagles going 10-6 to the 2011 eagles going 8-8.
Let’s not be sheep being led by the “pundits”…. some games were butt ugly yes, but the overall “FAIL” was a drop in 2 games. The overall defense for the season was not a nuclear wasteland….
Objectively speaking, the eagles are close to a playoff team right now… and with another off season to practice and learn the new techniques, i still have faith.
Of course, I was one of the guys admitting last offseason that our “spree” did not automatically mean anything…
so let me be the voice of reason again…
We are not on the precipice of a terrible season. We’ve turned the corner. We are going to have a very good team this year.
