The Linc - Reactions To Bowles Hire, Castillo Non-Fire
Ex-Cowboy: Bowles Will Help Birds | Eagletarian | 01/30/2012
Anthony Henry, now retired in the Dallas area, said Bowles has a talent for "tapping in on what each player is good at, and bringing that together" into a coherent coverage plan for the secondary. "Guys feel comfortable with their roles and the scheme," Henry said -- not something that was always true for the Eagles last season.

I love Bowles background. He and Reid know each other from the Packers in the mid-90s. Todd was on the Player Personnel staff. Then he went and coached in college. I think that is good experience. It teaches you how to teach. Then he spent time with head coaches Bill Parcells and Butch Davis. He worked with some good DCs: Mike Nolan, Foge Fazio, Mike Zimmer, and Dom Capers. Those guys are terrific coaches with a variety of schemes, ideas, and backgrounds.
Eagles make the right call on Castillo - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN
The only potential issue with keeping Castillo is if the players don't buy in. The defensive backs in particular chafed last year at the amount of zone coverage they were asked to play. But perhaps the addition of Bowles, a longtime defensive backs coach who most recently was the interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins, will help sell the move to Nnamdi Asomugha & Co. if that in fact needs to be done.
Frank: Keeping Castillo won't get it done
The Eagles have decided to keep Juan Castillo as their defensive coordinator and although Reuben Frank says that the defense will be better, the move doesn't help with the ultimate goal: winning a Super Bowl.

Honestly, I am not that upset with the Eagles bringing back Juan, maybe it’s because the longer it took to get word the more I thought that it was inevitable that it would happen. But if it is true that Andy never considered it then I do have an issue. That said, the Bowles hire is a fantastic move.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
The more I hear about Bowles, the more enamored I am with him.
I just don’t see the why Juan is the DC. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d bet my last dollar that Bowles would be a better DC than Juan (regardless if it’s by a lot or a little)…so if the Eagles are always making non-emotional business decisions, why have someone more qualified for the position? This isn’t a knock on Juan (I like him as a person, just not a DC), it just doesn’t follow suit with the whole “all in” ideology that the FO has been carrying.

Why is Bowles more qualified
He’s been on the defensive side of the ball longer, sure, but that doesn’t mean he’d be any better.
Trust in Juan
Dude got thrown to the wolves last year. He’s a tough minded bastard and he’s doing brain push-ups as we speak. D will be epic next year.
The coaches are to blame, the players are to blame. Sorry to say, but Andy has lost this team. 53 super talented individuals with no heart.

On hiring Bowles, and not firing Castillo
Let me start off by saying that I am neither a Castillo supporter or detractor. I am pretty much indifferent there.
I think that Castillo has been made to be the symbol of everything that went wrong this year, the scapegoat as it were. What were the Eagles problems last year?
Turnovers on offense
Poor tackling
Limited talent / experience at the linebacker position
Misuse of players on defense
Of those, only one can be directly attributed to Castillo. If you want to blame anyone blame Reid and the FO. They knew that the lockout was coming, yet they hired a DC with no prior NFL defensive coaching experience, and left the middle of the defense exposed. Reid always says that he needs to put players in position to succeed. How did that go this year with Castillo?
Sorry, but we weren’t going to get an experienced DC this year. Taking the job involves risk. Reid is on the hot seat. Washburn and the wide 9 are not going anywhere, so there would be limitations in implementing your own defensive scheme. One could ask why not hire Bowles as DC. Good question. Maybe some of that is Reid not wanting to admit that he screwed up.
But I’ll argue that the Bowles hiring is the next best thing to hiring a new DC. He’s an experienced coach. I think that Castillo is the type of guy that will put his ego aside and let his assistants help him. I see Bowles fitting perfectly in that regard.
So, as nervous as keeping Castillo as DC makes me, I think that we could be OK there. Quite honestly, I am more worried about who Reid and the FO bring in through free agency and the draft than I am about Castillo.
Go Eagles!

You can’t blame poor tackling on coaches? I always thought you could. Especially since he was all about fundamentals. If he’s trying to coach fundamentals so much and the players still can’t tackle, doesn’t that means he sucks at coaching?
Prediction: the 3-4 will be out of style in two years.
So no, I will not shut up about stupidity.

Hey, just a thought
Just throwing this out there. Anyone think this hire is a way to set fire under Juan, and if he performs poorly bowels will be promoted to dc and Juan demoted to db coach or fired?

Should have done that immediately when they hired Bowles..
Then when Bowles gets lured away for a head coaching job, Jaun would be ready.
what should have happened.
Todd Bowels will hired has DC. Bowels will bring his own scheme and have full control of the defense along with bringing in his own coaching staff.’

His defense would take us to the SuperBowles!
And no-Juan would remember our old coordinator’s name.

Leave it to the
Eagles to make huge deals out of signing position coaches. Never heard a team making this much spin on pos.coaches before ( Washburn, Mudd & now Bowles ).
Guessing they are silently pushing blame on Lee for the secondary problems & not the inexperienced defensive cord
