I posted a FanShot over at The Phinsider (Dolphins SB Nation blog) to get their reaction to the Todd Bowles hire by the Eagles. Their comments were very positive; go see for yourself.

Why again couldn’t they just make this guy the DC? He’s about 5000x more qualified than Juan ever was.
Some people would use the word “continuity”.

Because Reid will never admit that putting Juan there might could have been a mistake and that Bowles is far more qualified.

Todd Bowles seem like the secondary coach equivalent of Rob Ryan. Mostly mediocre results in his tenure. I don’t really see why he’s necessarily an improvement over Castillo.

Apples and Oranges. Bowles’ results come at the cost of the rest of the defense. Rob Ryan actually ran those defenses and only had one top ten defense in Oakland. I don’t think Bowles is a slam dunk, Jauron didn’t necessarily make our corners into pro-bowlers, but I do like Bowles’ corners in Miami and hope he has the same kind of success here.
Honestly I think it's because they see potential in Juan for whatever reason,
I think the Eagles know what they’re doing they’ve always thought outside the box and it’s typically turned out well.
Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...
Wild_Eagle!
Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

Bowles gets nothing but love in So Fla.
Great hire by us. I was secretly hoping he would be the hire over Spags for D-CO but I’ll take him as a DB coach.

i think he’s the “defensive coordinator in training” so to speak.

Someone please explain to me why I should be super hyped about Todd Bowles.
He’s only coached one team with a top 10 pass D (2010 Dolphins) and hasn’t really coached any particularly great players save for Terence Newman (who’s merely been very good, not great) and maaaaaaybe Sean Smith. Although he’s coached a fair amount of valuable reserve types – Anthony Henry, Roy Williams, Yeremiah Bell, Andre’ Goodman, Vontae Davis, etc, it’s not enough to impress me.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
I’m guessing veteran presence for a defense that could only count on the D-Line during the season

So
he never has had any talent to work with but managed a top ten pass D very recently? Isn’t this an argument for him being a coach worth his salt?

If I am usually a D student but I got an A on a recent test, it doesn’t suddenly make me a good student.
He’s had decent talent but aside from one year hasn’t had great results.

You
are complaining about him based on never having coached good players, but is that his fault? You can’t turn chicken shit into chicken salad; you say you aren’t impressed that he coached “valuable reserve types” (decent back-ups?). Do you mean that he took talent and turned it into mediocrity?
by ChillBillinChina on Jan 31, 2012 12:52 AM EST up reply actions
I’m saying that the players he’s coached haven’t translated their talent into good results and that he just doesn’t have any sort of track record that screams ‘future great defensive coach’. He coached okay players? Fine, but okay players don’t win championships. It’s not like the Dallas secondary suffered when he left or Miami’s secondary got markedly better after he got there. If you want to blame some of his track record on his DCs or the head coaches, then fine. But I just don’t think he’s really done much to warrant this ‘up-and-coming’ praise. I’m not saying he’s bad; I’m saying he’s overrated.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

That's fair
I just think (hope?) that he has some kind of pedigree/experience, and that he can only help this rather inexperienced DC and young safeties. At the very least, shouldn’t make them any worse…
by ChillBillinChina on Jan 31, 2012 1:15 AM EST up reply actions
Also
pass defense involves more than just the play of the secondary. What kind of pass rush did the defenses he worked on generate? Did his safeties have to cheat up to bolster weak run defenses, giving up a step in covering the deep threat?
Maybe Bowles is trash, I don’t know, but it’s not as easy to make the call as just glancing at this or that stat and making a holistic judgment.

Honestly this may be the beginning of the end of Juan for all we know.
Bring in an up and commer who has tons of potential and who seems like they have what it takes to run a defense and have him learn the Eagles organization.. And if partway through the season Juan’s not cutting it we could make that change to Bowles is needed with limited transition.

I understand the thought process with this reasoning but, I can’t for the life of me remember the Eagles changing partners mid way through the dance.

With Asante leaving...
Our Defensive secondary becomes quite simplified actually. I think part of our horrible defense was our best players (DRC and Asomugha) were forced to learn completely new roles without a real offseason. We all saw DRC in the slot and Asomugha at safety. We all saw how that went. Asante leaving makes it easy, especially for Juan. DRC on the one, Asomugha at the two and even puts Hanson in the nickel where he plays best.
Btw Vonte Davis is pretty fucking good, not elite, but pretty fucking good. And Sean Smith has alot of potential, but is not as good as Vonte right now. And if he has any say when drafting CBs, he likes physical pressers
And our D next year is going to be pretty good. Just imagine a basic 4-3 set up and if you look at everyone up on the line, we have pro bowlers across the board. Smart drafting (Please get Luke) and FA fillings can make it amazing. Definitely my last round pick in fantasy :P
Let's just say that Castillo needs to stick with Man-to-Man coverage.
that’s when we did our best.
