The #Eagles will hire Todd Bowles to be DBs coach and Juan Castillo will remain DC, an NFL source said.

So, since the DC and the defensive staff is staying the same, aside from Bowles, is it safe to assume that the defensive philosophy will be staying the same?
If that is the case, then we better incorporate at least 2 impactful LBs to this defense.
I wanted Spags (like everyone else did)
But I’m fine with keeping Juan and bringing in Bowles with a different perspective for the secondary (and defense as a whole). The bottom line is we have the personnel to be a top-end defense. We just need to upgrade the LB’s.
I would rather Bowles was the DC. He may not have exp as a coordinator, but at least he has defensive expierience.

I know you have the sarcasm font on but Juan actually had a fine coaching resume to become a d assistant coach in the NFL when he left the college ranks, instead he became a oline coach, a position he never coached before. Now obviously he isn’t a d assistant but a d coord. But honestly the guy has been in the NFL longer than 70% of other coaches is bet.
I guess my point is I know its fun to blame Juan for everything but the guy earned atleast one more year. And he had his hand in this season but it was a team effort to be 8-8.

He earned another season?
He did not do shit to earn another season. There were chances to improve at DC this off-season, but we didn’t.
Don’t get me wrong, since I am an Eagles fan, and we are stuck with him another year, I hope he tears shit up. I don’t wish ill on the guy, just think he did a shit job with the players he had last season.

did he or did he not have a defense which ranked middle of the pack or better in every category?
As a first yr d coor with 8 new starters on defense, no ota, and shortened training camp The guy did enough to get a second yr. Hell mcd got two years.
Also who were these better options? Don’t say spags. Please the guy has had horrible defenses the past 3 seasons and a giants d for two years who had/ still have hof pass rushers and a qb who can some how magically throw balls up for grabs which only his players come down with.

With the talent he had on D, mediocre is not acceptable.

Im not so sure he earned it either
I just see leaving him in place as the scenario that is most condusive to this defense improving, as long as they drastically improved the LB play.

Can we use anymore as a negative against Juan since he has experience now as a DC?

As someone else said, Juan have more experience as DC then Bowles, so your point is kinda moot.

True
We weren’t playing stand out QBs either though. I want to see if it was a scheme change that lead to our late season success, or inferior play by the opponents. I did like some of the d-line looks late in the season (I think it was Cole and Babin lining up like 3-4 OLBs).

True but
Some of them were playing good when we played them. I think it was both scheme & opponents that had to do with the late season success, if we had been doing some of the stuff we did late in the year earlier maybe we win some of the early games?
The Legend
And that is what I want to find out. If we keep playing the same schemes going into next year, and we see success, I am more than willing to give Juan the credit.

I think NA played more man then you remember, you only saw the times when he played zone.
by Anders Jensen on Jan 30, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions
Negative
I watched every game, and I saw a lot of zone. I did notice that in the games we won, Nnamdi played more man (go figure), but the very next week, I would see him playing a ton of zone, and we would be getting abused by mediocre players.

Abused by medicore players? Only Cruz had his number, but he seems to make every CB in NFL look silly right now.

Alright Juan ...
Time to be a man and demand better linebackers. Show that you are a real coordinator . Don’t let Andy draft lineman on the first day of the draft.

What about a better LB coach?

Depends on who’s on the board. If someone like Coples falls we’d be dumb to not draft him
The Legend
If we could get Coples in the first, and Brown in the second, I think we would be in good shape.

I heard personnel dept is leaning lb…or dt… Or coples. I’m not that thrilled d tackle was thrown in there, makes me think they are going with ta’ amu in the 1st or something, but we do have 3 picks in the first 2 rounds. Also heard the team considers burfict a complete fuck up so at least it seems that we don’t have to worry bout drafting that head case unless it’s with a late pick

I like it but still
I’d rather another DC but whatever. I just hope we manage to play man press and get a good SAM and MIKE to shore up our tackling woes. Let’s see how this pans out.
