Eagles 2011 Statistical Leaders

With the Eagles 2011 season in the books, I figured it would be interesting to look at the teams top performers for the year.

Offense

DeSean Jackson led the team in receiving with 961 yards
Jeremy Maclin led the team with 63 catches
Maclin & Brent Celek tied for the team lead with 5 TD catches
The longest play of the season was Brent Celek's 73 catch against the Jets
LeSean McCoy obviously led everything rushing related.

Special Teams

The longest punt return for the Eagles this year was DeSean Jackson's 51 yarder against the Giants
The longest kick return of the year was just 33 yards by Dion Lewis
Interestingly, the longest punt return against the Eagles this season was only 25 yards

Defense

Jason Babin obviously led the team in sacks with 18, he also had a team high 3 forced fumbles
Jamar Chaney led the team in tackles with 92, Kurt Coleman came in 2nd with 78
Coleman also led the team in interceptions with 4. Asante Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha & Jamar Chaney each had three.

you wonder if we would be in the dance

If DeSean actually played at his highest level. He just straight disappeared in some games. Others he would drop TD passes or big catches. You can argue he hit his average stats, but i still think he under performed horribly.

I was really hoping at some point, Maclin would break out too. He was billed as a really explosive play making WR. I see a solid, above avg WR, but I don’t see top 10 or even top 15 written all over him

I know that he came off of the big scare in the offseason with his illness, but I have to agree with this statement. He is currently an above average WR, and I still hold out hope that he can improve into the top 10, but he seemed to make more catastrophic mistakes in 2011 than explosive plays.

You could say that about every player

Yes DeSean had a sub par year by his standards, but he wasn’t the only guy. I can’t single him out as the reason.

And Maclin had a really good year. Had he not gotten hurt, he’d easily have been in the 70-80 catch, 1000 yard area.

Exactly

70-80 catches for 1000 yards is above average for a player who gets favorable match ups…

When we drafted him he was supposed to be a top 10 pick who has game changing ability. Have you seen anything more than just being an above average player? I haven’t seen the game changing ability.

Well in all fairness, the only receiver Maclin has played better than in that draft is Nicks and Nicks was designed to be the number 1 unlike Maclin who could be argued that he was suppose to just be a 2nd receiver to Jackson. He’s been better than Harvin, Crabtree, and definitely better than DHB. You could make the argument though that all the receiver’s from that round have under performed so far.

Not better then Percy Harvin your over looking him for sure but Maclin was a great pick in that draft.

Wow, only 63 catches? And only 5 was the highest recieving TD stat?

In their defense

we didn’t have the greatest QB play all season either. VY couldn’t hit the ocean if throwing from a boat and Vick was injured for a few games and was a little off on some throws as well.

But the WR’s didn’t do the most with a lot of their opportunities either……too many drops!

by slandog on Jan 3, 2012 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

He missed 3 games, remember? With 63 catches in 13 games, he averaged about 5 catches per game. So if he had played in every game, the number would be around 75. Probably would have flirted with 1000 yards, as well.

Also, with more touches going to the RB and TE this year, it makes sense that the WR numbers are down a bit.

I had to read this three times to believe it.

And he led the team with 92 tackles.

only 69 solo tackles

by SKerwood on Jan 3, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

Chaney had a good year in the run game just struggled in pass coverage

by SKerwood on Jan 3, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

Getting a lot of tackles doesn’t necessarily mean you had a good year against the run.

Chaney

he didnt have a lot of tackles ended with only 81 solo tackles and 34 stops a guy like Bowman had 115 tackles and 70 stops

Stops – Solo tackles which constitutes as a offensive failure

by SKerwood on Jan 3, 2012 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

So if Chaney tackles a back after a 10 yard gain the offense failed?

no if Chaney tackled his 10 yards in the backfield the O would of failed

he did have a good year in the run game he did get dogged in the outside run games at times but inside run he handled it well and except him to be back next year in run situations

by SKerwood on Jan 3, 2012 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

he really didnt....

by Joe_D on Jan 3, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

I second that.

Chaney has way too often hit the wrong gap, couldn’t get off blockers for most of the time and has had trouble reading plays.

At best case he’s the primary backup at LB next year.

by GermanEagle on Jan 3, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

When you see a LB fill a hole instantly it’s designed the clog it when you watch a LB you can clearly tell what he did if he followed RB or filled a hole wether he did that good or bad is another thing

If Chaney and Coleman had a combined total of 170 tackles,

that means they had a total of at least 340 missed tackles.

by ASObyNature on Jan 3, 2012 10:48 AM EST reply actions

Nuthin from nuthin

but the Birds finished in the top 10 team defense in Total Defense (8th), passing defense (10th), INTs (1st), Opponent 3rd down conversion (10th), scoring D (10th).

All this after what can only be described as a horrific start and with the offense giving out turnovers like candy for much of the year.

Eagles Missed Tackle Leaders

Rolle – 13
Asomugah – 12
Chaney – 11
Coleman – 11
Samuel- 8

Parker, Hunt, Patterson, Graham, Dixon and Marsh finished with 0 MT

by SKerwood on Jan 3, 2012 10:59 AM EST reply actions

I didn’t miss any tackles either.

"I once had a friend named Charlie, and Charlie was always late to school
He had a black eye one day, but he wouldn’t say just what happened to him
Charlie got mad in class one day, and stood up with a .22 pistol

Jarrad Page can’t be far behind those guys.

Surprising that Rolle is so high on the list. Keep in mind, a “counting stat” like missed tackles is based on number of opportunities, so a guy who played every down is more likely to lead the team. A percentage of missed tackles would be better than a simple count*. Of course, Rolle wasn’t out there in the beginning of the season, and didn’t play on the nickel all year. I’m fairly certain that Chaney saw the most time on the field, which was probably a mistake. I’d rather have Rolle out there due to his ability to make plays and the potential for him to learn better tackling skills, but this may be a significant weakness for him.

Coleman is a bit surprising as he was supposed to be a sure tackler. Then again, so is Asomugha.

Marsh didn’t have any missed tackles, but how many tackles did he have? He was rarely on the field. Ditto for Hunt, Dixon, and Graham. Parker and Patterson have always been solid against the run.

  • A possible quick formula: TackleSuccessRate = Tackles / (Tackles + MissedTackles)
I’m sure Football Outsiders or another group has a better stat for this.

Also, do you have a source for the missed tackle leaders?

Should we tag and Trade Desean

for someone like D’Qwell Jackson, draft pick, use him to move up the draft, or sign him?
Should we take the BPA in draft @ the 15th pick or get a LB?

by ASObyNature on Jan 3, 2012 11:20 AM EST reply actions

Vontaze Burfict
Zach Brown
Alfonzo Dennard we should take at 15

by SKerwood on Jan 3, 2012 11:25 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Why Burfict at 15?

He’ll more than likely be around in the 2nd round thanks to his play and attitude this year.
