Brent Celek A Passenger In DUI Crash

Brent Celek was a passenger in a car involved in a DUI crash last night in South Philadelphia. It happened near an off ramp close to the Linc actually. The driver reportedly lost control and hit a concrete barrier, then failed a field sobriety test. The driver was arrested and no one was hurt in the crash.

The important takeaway is that no one was hurt in the crash and while it is good that Celek wasn't driving the car, he really is equally responsible to be sure that no one else is driving a car drunk. I think that's a duty we all have if we get in a car with someone drunk.

Now, of course, we don't know the details really and sometimes it's not obvious... then again sometimes it is. Who knows? So far the Eagles have not commented.

We dont know how wasted Celek was him self. Because if he was so wasted to I was last weekend, no way in hell did he have a chance to prevent the other from driving.

Who cares. Irrelevant. He’s 27. If he was so drunk to the point of almost passing out/blacking out, I would be embarrassed to be out with him. He should know better.

It doesn’t matter if Celek was drunk or sober; you don’t let someone who is drunk drive a car. Even if you aren’t gonna be in the car with him

So are you telling me, that you have never done anything stupid while drunk? If I was sober I would never let anybody drive drunk, but I dont know if I was drunk I could claim the same.

Can’t say for sure…I’ve never drank alcohol in my life (22 yrs old), and I really never plan to.

Not to sound harsh, but if you have never drank alcohol, you should not say what you can and cant do, when you are drunk.

You shouldn’t drive drunk or let someone else drive drunk. As far as I’m concerned, anyone should be able to say that.

I would say the same sober, but im 100% sure if I was really drunk, I cant say if I would or would not allow some to drive drunk.

This have nothing to do what ones believe is right or wrong, but rather what can be expected one of once you have a bit to much to drink.

by Anders Jensen on Jan 26, 2012 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

What? Why are you making excuses for them? Guess what, nobody cares that you made a bad decision because you were drunk, that is just white noise. The fact of the matter is that someone chose to drive drunk and someone allowed them to (or at least didn’t object, which is the same thing). No excuses, it’s wrong. End of story. If they were to have killed someone, do you think the family would care that alcohol impaired their judgement? Hell no they wouldn’t.

I never said it was an excuse, I even said im against drunk driving my self (or did you just ignore that). All I said was that when you are drunk it can be hard to make proper judgment and as far as I know, its only the driver there is wrong here by law.

by Anders Jensen on Jan 26, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

You make the decision to drink. Every decision you make after that is your responsibility, whether you were in control of it or not because you made that initial decision. I like Celek, but this was stupid.

What if the passenger is not aware (I read futher down that Celek claimed he didnt knew)

by Anders Jensen on Jan 26, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

That depends. If Celek knew the driver had been drinking then it doesn’t matter whether he perceived the driver or as drunk or not, you don’t drive with someone who’s been drinking at all. If Celek didn’t know that the guy had been drinking then yes, he’s off the hook. But he might want to reconsider his circle.

Too much city revenue generated from those games. If they lined up sobriety check points around the stadiums after a game, there would be chaos.
I grew up in a small town. There are a lot of bars in one area. they NEVER set up sobriety checkpoints on the 1 or 2 roads connecting there. NEVER. Its politics man.

by Anders Jensen on Jan 26, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, a couple of my friends have told me they did it, and I bitched them out. There’s no reason for it. If you’ve had a drink, don’t drive. If you know you’ll be drinking at a party, don’t drive there! Or make plans to stay over. Its possible to drink responsibly, but you need to plan when you’re sober, because when you’re drunk you don’t always make sound decisions.

Celek is only 27 years old, just a kid. Like most of the Eagles. When I was in my 20’s I went out and drank too. Its not shocking that a 27 year old who is part owner of a bar likes to drink. Very good chance Celek was obliterated and it was the lesser of two evils driving.

I’m 48 now and when I was younger I drove after drinking and rode with other drivers who were drinking. It was stupid and inexcusable and I am not proud of it at all. I haven’t done it for years. My son is in college and I told him not to do any of that, and if he needs to call a cab and send me the bill. Celek was dumb for getting in that car plain and simple. There is no excuse.

He has money. If he wanted to go out and get in the wrapper for his birthday, fine. Call a car service.

by deg0ey on Jan 26, 2012 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

Truth

After three drinks you might be under or over the limit, and it isn’t entirely obvious to yourself or others that you are slightly intoxicated and may have reduced reaction time, decreased sensual awareness, etc. Like the commercials say, buzzed driving is drunk driving, but it can be hard to tell the moment you go from totally sober to slightly tipsy, and millions of people drive to and from bars every night, many of which are sitting on that fence or have fallen off it already. One of four drivers is intoxicated after midnight or something like that.

Not excusing it, but it happens.

Accidents happen, and being drunk isnt always the cause. Who was it (i think a baseball player) a few years ago was driving home from a bar. He did nothing wrong, but was struck by an old woman who ran a red light. He ended up having beer on his breath, blowing a .09 and being charged a DUI. It was within the last year or 2….. But i cant remember who it was.

Yeah I don't know what teams do during the offseason to protect their players..

I just don’t get why they do these things in the first place..Can you imagine having something bad happen to Celek?…We drafted Chad Jones..He went out celebrating and almost lost part of his leg in an accident..Fortunatley, he seems to be recovering well..but we lost an immediate impact player..Now I know the NFL and teams have counseling for these kids but what else can they do?..It’s a shame really…

But really, who knows?..That’s what they are saying..If true..it’s a miracle..I just hate these kids getting themselves in those kinds of situations…It’s just a damn shame what these kids do to themselves..As a parent I try my best to steer them in the right direction..I have two older boys who have finally figured it out and now listen to me again and they thank me..You go through a period where they don’t want to hear a word you say, but with perseverence, it all works out for the best..You just die a little inside as a parent trying..and you just hope they got your message…
