The Eagles, just like every other NFL team, are going to be speaking with hundreds of prospects between now and the draft in April. However, so far here at the Senior Bowl practices, I’ve seen the Eagles speak with eight prospects after practices. Six of them were pass rushers, and they all spoke with Player Personnel Executive, Phil Savage.

If they were to select Coples or Ingram I don’t think that would have anything to do with what they think of Graham. Tapp is probably gone, Landri & Laws might be gone & those two guys can play all over the line so we’ll have to get some replacements. If we were to select Coples I wouldn’t be surprised if most of his snaps were at DT

Not bringing Landri back would be a mistake. Wouldn’t have a problem if Laws got away though.

Does bam have a brand I am unaware of or are you talking about the ass cattle branding from the movie??

If you are just talking about the ass one I think this round goes to QC hands down. Im far from an expert but I don’t think I’ve ever ween a brand with that level of detail. Do you understand how pokerfaced he must have been to pull off that “8” like that??

I’m talking about from the movie, I don’t understand branding at all since as far as I know Bam & Coples are the only two guys that have done it(although I’m sure there are more that have) but I would imagine it would hurt more on the ass then the arm

No its fairly popular, especially with black fraternities.

I cant remember the name of the one he is (its one of the larger ones, purple/yellow, omega psi??) but they are known for the interlocking omega symbols which he has higher on his left arm. If you see that one thats how most brands look (not as pronounced/raised). The amount of detail on this one makes me think it might actually be something different than a brand, scarification maybe (where they actually use something like an exacto knife to cut a design out of the skin and then let the scar tissue grow up and out of the wound).

This would be great

If we can find another pass rushing DT late in the draft (4 and up)
Or a DE sleeper later in the draft (I’d be okay using the 2nd 2nd rd pick, if we don’t have any other needs and there isn’t someone we want still on the board)

BUT if we draft a DE in the first, I’m going to rage all the way to New York and shit on Andys desk before the draft is over

Just wait until December..

by maximdim on Jan 25, 2012 8:05 PM EST reply actions

NYG Fans

were raging like crazy when they took JPP when it wasn’t needed. But look at them now… in the SB with a stud DE.

Point is I don’t think we’re as set at DL as we all think. Our four starting “core” linemen are on the wrong side of their careers. And our “young” guys are Graham and Hunt who are far-from guaranteed starter-caliber players. If Parker leaves in FA and possibly Tapp/Landry we will absolutely have a need on the DL. A guy like Coples would be a perfect young guy to work into the rotation and groom for the future.

Disclaimer: The only way this works is if we sign a starting LB in FA.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 26, 2012 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

Agree

We must and will address LB, but we are very young there. I wouldn’t mind seeing us pick up a LB in FA. If that were the case I would not mind us drafting Coples if he is there. We have two second round picks to get another LB.

Go Eagles!

by MRPH on Jan 26, 2012 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly

My knee-jerk reaction when the season ended was “Draft Keuchley!!” But the more I sit back and look at the big picture, the best plan would be to add a really good veteran FA to the young LB corps. Then add a young DE/DT to our veteran-laden DL. It just makes sense.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 26, 2012 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

Btw

I said:

If Parker leaves in FA and possibly Tapp/Landry we will absolutely have a need on the DL.

But I have to clarify. I know that Tapp is still under contract. But he could be a cap casualty depending on how the offseason plays out.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 26, 2012 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

Since Tapp is going to make $4mil next year I think he’s going to either get traded or be a cap casualty

The Legend

by KJ Brophy on Jan 26, 2012 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

I think there’s a chance he comes back. But it all depends who else is brought in. If we draft a 1st round DE, he’s gone imo. If we sign a rotational DE, he’s gone.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 26, 2012 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t know, it would be tough to pay $4mil to a backup that’s dealt with injuries in the past. I think it’s more likely we draft then sign because they might want to get Hunt more snaps this year & if we can’t get someone early they really like then just wait until late to develop someone & go with a rotation of Cole, Babin, Graham, Hunt. Coples & Ingram can play DT as well so Washburn can move them all over the line if we drafted one of them

W/ as solid as we are w/ our offensive core… & 4 selections in the first three rounds, it wouldn’t be that unbelievable if we draft 3/4 defensive players consecutively. Not to mention possible trade bait at CB. Although no matter the tag number, I don’t think we can afford to lose Asante.

I’d be thrilled with a DE at 15. Upshaw, the guy from Illinois, Coples… those guys can play. While I like Kuechly… we can get Mike later. Target Audie Cole with our second 2 and take one of these exceptional DE’s if they are there. Let Kuechly be the fall back plan.

Plain and simple… you take the best player when you have the 15th pick. I think Upshaw is just plain better than Kuechly.

by TheGreatJB99 on Jan 25, 2012 9:00 PM EST reply actions

I think Upshaw is just plain better than Kuechly.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. Upshaw hasn’t even shown he can play DE in a 4-3 defense because he was a 3-4 OLB for the most part. Not to say he can’t do it, but one has shown he can play in the place that he’s projected and the other is a project player. And if you’re talking position wise, then I would have to disagree with you because Luke Kuechly was the best player at his position last year. Upshaw was great, but I’m not sure he dominated his position like no other.

I'll take Coples at 15...

Other than Coples….only Cam or Bequette, later in the draft.. We need a bigger/taller line. Take a look at the Giants line that has given them another opportunity at a Super Bowl. Everyone but Osi is 6-5..Strahan was 6-5 too… Height doesn’t make ppl slow, so it’s not like it would effect the wide-9. Coples could play DE and DT in Philly.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

This

Everyone seems to forget how dominate a defense can be with a great DL. Granted, we have Babin, Cole, and Jenkins, but the key is the rotation just like the Giants. You get those fresh legs and great players and you have serious problems.

If Coples falls to 15, this team would be dumb to not grab him or another elite talent. This is what I’m leaning more towards now (assuming we keep Desean and Coples doesn’t fall to 15):

Trade Down and Trade Asante
1) Hightower
2) Randall/best WR available
2) DL: Poe/Worthy/Thompson/Curry
2) Best CB – Gilmore/Xavier/Hosley OR Poe/Worthy/Thompson/Curry
3) BPA – McNutt, Kirk Cousins, Markelle Martin, etc.
3) Keenan Robinson

by MJG123 on Jan 25, 2012 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

Strong Pass Rush is a Strong D.

An elite pass rush makes all the difference in the world. We have a very good one as of now, but if we can get an elite talent there is no reason not to. Especially when you look at our division, none of the opposing QBs are known for preforming well under extreme pressure.

True....

but nevertheless….Coples has way more upside then Graham ever had. Not to say Graham isn’t/wasn’t a good player, b/c I honestly think he is. But, I think he has some serious limitations based on his size….something the Eagles didn’t think were that significant.

Anyways…Coples will not be there at 15 and the Eagles will have to trade up if they really want him.

by MJG123 on Jan 26, 2012 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I’ve heard nothing but great things about Ingram and Upshaw, but I want nothing to do with them. They’re just another undersized DL that we don’t need. Just another Brandon Graham. We need to absolutely get taller. I would take Coples in a heartbeat at 15. He’s a risk because of how he fell off his senior year, but he’s a physical freak and could pay huge dividends.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 26, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

Coples is a better prospect than JPP and he’s either bigger or the same size as him.

Is not a no name LB. He’s aslo best fit at SAM, and probably drafted in the third round; take a deep breath.

Okay , fine

I googled him, he is an upgrade I suppose. But when your projected to go in the third or fourth round , you’re definitely borderline “no name”.

He has some size, his forty time is fast, but when you watch his videos he seems to like to dive for players ankles. I don’t think that is going to work very well in the nfl .

by Saidrick on Jan 26, 2012 11:42 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

tacklong low..

even if he dives at ankles….is better than tackling high any day of the week. He tackles, lets fix things from there.
I think you might want to relax your “no name” critera. Being a top 100 player in the nation isn’t exactly a bad thing.

Personally

Some of the pre-draft reports I read, I though that Aaron Rodgers was going to drop out of the first round to be honest. They were dogging him in reports.

Coples didn’t do well his senior year, but he has shown that character isn’t a problem, more or less its just his motor (which every DE seems to have a problem with) and combine that with the fact that he’s built in Julius Peppers’ mold and can dominate when he wants. He may drop out of the top 5, but I don’t believe very far.

Do you guys feel it's more important to

address the LB situation right now or just get a decent vet in the offseason or out of FA and go for a young talented DE/DT? I really want Kuechly knowing he’s a very smart and instinctive player that can come in and make an impact right away. On the other hand getting someone like Coples and strengthening our young D-Line even more sounds very enticing. Any thoughts?

Means two things … we have a better idea what we’re going to get right away, and it offers major flexibility on draft day once that hole(s) is presumed filled.
