2012 Philadelphia Eagles Offseason Plan

Personnel Moves:

Announce The Return Of Juan Castillo As Defensive Coordinator

With Steve Spagnuolo taking the D-Coordinator position with the Saints, it’s all but certain Juan Castillo will be back for a second year. As we all know, Juan had a terrible start to his tenure as DC. Whether it was misusing his trio of Pro Bowl cornerbacks or just flat out being out schemed by the opposition, it wasn’t working. But as the season progressed and the offensive turnovers slowed, he began to come into his own. Yes, you might say “Oh, it was against bums like Rex Grossman, Mark Sanchez, Stephen McGee and Matt Moore.” But it was just more than beating up on average QB’s, it was the complex schemes and looks he was giving offenses. The one that really stood out to me was against the Jets, when Trent Cole and Jason Babin lined up at middle linebacker. On that play they stunted causing Babin to get unblocked and get his third sack of the game. Complex schemes like this give me hope for the future that we have found the Juan (I know I should become a comedian) at Defensive Coordinator.

Hire Todd Bowles As Defensive Backs Coach

This might be one of the most underrated moves of the offseason if The Eagles can get it done. Bringing in a defensive backs coach that not only has experience playing the position for eight seasons, but also coaching there for 15 years could give Juan a much needed help in being able to put the players in a position to win. (Andy reference) Also a much under looked fact, while in Miami, Bowles had 3 good CB’s(Davis, Allen and Smith) so to me it seems like there won’t be any problem with having our 3 Pro Bowlers on the field at the same time.

Roster Moves:

Re-sign DeSean Jackson

This is without a doubt the number one priority for The Eagles this offseason. I hear a lot of Eagles fans saying “Release him! He’s terrible, we don’t need him! Let’s sign Marques Colston, Dwayne Bowe or Draft Michael Floyd! Or even better yet, bring back T.O.!” That’s right, I saw some idiot on a blog say let him walk, not trade, let a two-time Pro Bowler walk out the door in order to bring back the 39 year old Terrell Owens. For as much as I love popcorn, and I really, really love popcorn, I would rather eat one of Fred-Ex’s bowties and read Brian Rolle’s tweets all day rather then get my popcorn ready again for T.O. Anyway, back to DeSean. A lot of you may say that LeSean McCoy is the best player on the Eagles offense, and I won’t disagree with you. But without DeSean taking the top off of coverages and having safeties playing 20 sometimes even 25 yards deep, LeSean would not be nearly as effective as he was this past season. Just go take a look at the Eagles offensive numbers from the Arizona game when DeSean was benched. They were absolutely abysmal. You can’t just go out and replace 229 catches, 4085 yards and 21 touchdowns. Just put it this way, if the Eagles don’t re-sign Jackson, we’ll be looking at much worse than an 8-8 season in 2012-13.

Don’t Re-sign Vince Young, Ronnie Brown, Owen Schmitt, Steve Smith, Victor Abimiri, Trevor Laws, Juqua Parker and Jamaal Jackson

Vince Young- Pretty much self-explanatory, he was brought in to resurrect his career from the grave but ended up cementing his coffin on the sideline as a backup. As a longhorns fan it saddens me to see Vince go from National Championship MVP and number 3 overall pick to career backup. In 7 appearances and 3 starts last season he threw for 866 yards, 4 TD’s, and 9 INT’s. Not exactly what the Eagles thought they were going to get from the two-time Pro Bowler.

Ronnie Brown- The Wildcat was more like a pussycat this season for the Eagles. He was brought in to be the big back the team had desperately been searching for, but ended up costing them the game against the 49ers with one of the most idiotic plays in recent history. (See Here) The Eagles attempted to trade Brown mid-season to the Lions for former Eagle Jerome Harrison, but the trade was voided due to the lifesaving diagnosis of Harrison having a brain tumor. As the season progressed, he lost his backup job to rookie Dion Lewis and saw the field sparingly after. Brown had 136 yards on 42 carries to go along with one touchdown on the ground.

Owen Schmitt- Owen has been a good player in his 2 years for the Eagles. He is a solid blocker but doesn’t really bring much else to the table. Because of his limited ability, he began to see the field less and less as the season progressed. When The Eagles had former all-pro fullback Leonard Weaver they were able to split him out wide, use him as an H-back and also hand him the ball out of the backfield. I think the Eagles will go that route again and try to add another dynamic fullback this offseason either through the draft or via free agency.

Steve Smith- The Eagles shocked us all by signing former Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith away from the Giants this offseason. Smith, who was coming off a knee surgery, wasn’t expected to be fully healthy until mid-season. As we all came to find out he wouldn’t be fully healthy the entire season, catching only 11 balls for 124 yards and a touchdown. Another failed free agent signing by the Eagles.

Victor Abimiri- Once a promising second round pick out of Notre Dame, Abimiri never lived up to his potential. He beat out Juqua Parker for the starting left end spot in 2009 and started 5 games that season. After the season he underwent mircrofractue surgery on his left knee and due to injuries, hasn’t played a snap for The Eagles since.

Trevor Laws- Laws is also a second round pick out of Notre Dame that hasn’t lived up to expectations. In 55 career games for The Eagles he’s amassed 5 sacks and 57 tackles. With the recent acquisitions of Cullen Jenkins and Derek Landri, to go along with Mike Patterson and Antonio Dixon, there doesn’t seem to be any room left for Laws.

Juqua Parker- Juqua is currently one of the longest tendered Eagles left on the team. He’s had a great career with the team, being a mainstay at left end for the past 7 years. He’s racked up 31.5 sacks, 195 tackles and amazingly has scored 3 touchdowns. With Trent Cole, Jason Babin, Brandon Graham, Phillip Hunt and Darryl Tapp, there’s just too much depth for the Eagles to keep Juqua around.

Jamaal Jackson- Jamaal Jackson was the starting center for the Eagles up until last season, when he was surprisingly beaten out in training camp by rookie Jason Kelce. Jamaal has had a great career as an Eagle being the anchor of the Eagles offensive line for 4 years. Jackson has publically stated that he wants an opportunity to start elsewhere, and he will receive that opportunity this offseason when he is not resigned by the Eagles.

Re-sign Evan Mathis, Derek Landri, King Dunlap, and Antonio Dixon

Evan Mathis- In order for the Eagles to repeat last year’s success on the offensive line they need to lock up LG Evan Mathis. Mathis was an under the radar signing last year who was inserted into the starting lineup after Todd Herremans was moved out to RT. Mathis played unbelievably good last season, being rated the best guard in the league by many outlets. A starting line of Peters, Mathis, Kelce, Watkins and Herremans will go a long way in keeping Michael Vick healthy next season. I see the 30 year old Mathis getting a 3-4 year deal from the birds.

Derek Landri- Landri was actually a casualty of training camp cuts last season but was brought back after Antonio Dixon’s season ending injury. He was one of the big reasons for the Eagles reemergence against stopping the run late in the season. Landri seems to always be around the ball and in the backfield making plays, what is something the Eagles need. Landri gets a 2-3 year deal.

King Dunlap- The colossal King Dunlap surprised many of us last year by filling in at multiple spots on the O-line. He showed the ability at tackle to get low and protect the QB from some of the best edge rushers in the league, while also moving inside to guard and opening up running lanes for the backs. He is a versatile player who will be back next year as the primary backup at both tackle spots. 2-3 year deal for the King.

Antonio Dixon- Dixon was a great find of waivers in 2009. In a 2 year span as an Eagle he has 3 sacks and 49 tackles. The 6’3, 322lb DT is known for being more of a run stopper but also has the ability to rush the passer. Look out for Dixon to have a breakout 2012-13 season. He gets a 3-4 year deal.

Trade Asante Samuel

While I wish we could keep Asante, I don’t see any way it happens. He’s due$ 9.5 million this offseason. Last year there were rumors of Asante being traded before the season, and then again at the trade deadline. He’s gone on the record saying that the Eagles don’t want him. With statements like “Couple people upstairs might not want me, but who cares? They’ve probably never played football,” and “It’s a business and they run it like a business and they’re going to do what they need to do. They’re playing with a lot of money, playing fantasy football, doing their thing.” It seems like the feelings mutual between both parties that Asante won’t be back. Asante has had a hell of a career as an Eagle, picking off 23 passes and making 3 Pro Bowls. When it’s all said and done, I think the Eagles will trade Asante to the Bears for a third round pick. (10th overall in the 3rd round) With the trade of Asante, it enables the Eagles to move Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie out to LCB, his natural position where he was a Pro Bowler back in 2009. With Nnamdi and DRC the Eagles will have one of the top CB tandems in the league.

Release Winston Justice

Once a promising second round pick out of USC, Winston Justice never lived up to expectations. He started 31 games in 5 years for the Eagles, including starting all 16 games in 2009. He was given a 4 year, $18.15 million contract after the 2009 season. He’s due $3.25 million this year and unless he restructures his deal, he will not be back.

*With the trade of Asante and Release of Winston Justice, the eagles save almost $13 million in cap space.

I like just about everything except for the draft and a couple other things

Luke Kuechly is extremely overrated and his limited athleticism and subpar coverage skills are going to make him a situational player in the NFL.
Here is a good scouting report on Kuechly … http://www.newerascouting.com/2012/01/19/luke-kuechly-2012-nfl-draft-scouting-report/

Jared Crick and Brandon Thompson are better fits in Washburn’s scheme than Jerel Worthy who will probably be off the board anyways. The Eagles should use this pick on Vontaze Burfict and use their second 2nd round pick on Brandon Thompson or Jared Crick.

Another tight end when Celek is already great and Harbor is fine compliment that showed that he deserved more time on the field?

Don’t get me started on Kellen Moore……the anti Drew Brees and awful prospect especially when Kafka is already a project….

The rest of the draft is so so. I like Chris Rainey.

Tyvon Branch? So you’re gonna label Jaiquawn Jarrett a bust after his rookie season and bring in a free agent?…..

As far as linebackers

WILL – Rolle MIKE – Burfict SAM – Chaney

Defense = fixed

Please stop repeating the one link projecting him to the third round. Just because he’s white doesn’t mean he’s not athletic.

I never said anything about him being white?
He has a low ceiling. He can’t get off blocks, can’t cover, he can’t rush the passer. He has nice technique and gets credit for a lot of tackles thaT he makes when it’s too late.

A linebacker in today’s game has to be able to cover and be flexible. He isn’t strong or fast enough to go through the A-gaps and blitz. He gets burned in coverage and isn’t asked to do too much in college which covers up alot of his deficincies and would make him a liability in many situations in the NFL

The Eagles need an athletic every down linebacker that is flexible enough to do it all.

Luke Kuechly aint that guy.

We don't need more pass rushers behind the wide 9.

We need a sure fire tackler, which is Keuchly

The white thing is what I’m gathering from everyone who says he’s unathletic. And everything I’ve read, heard, and seen — outside of that single projection, leads me to believe Kuechly will be a very solid player.

I can see RB

but LB? Many aren’t a finished product plus they need to work on their technique, strength etc. Having an athletic guy is stupid especially when he needs make up for sloppy technique.

Low ceiling means shit.

I was thinking of a new article to write

and this needs to be address. Athleticism… which is basically hand- eye coordination and motor coordination. I could easily explained why people believe it is color implied.

Height and weight has more barring on success then skin color. That’s like saying blue eyes people see better than brown eye ones… Damn no wonder why our country sucks ball. We learn some dumb ass things.

I think everyone should be bilateral coordinated.

That guy is a sham, he also said that Burfict is the second best player in the draft on September 8th and he said that barring a significant injury, he would be staying there. I’ve since called him out and he has backed off both his pieces. Matt Miller is a hack on the same level as Todd McShay.

Think to yourself, everyone says Kuechly is a good player, who is more likely to be right? The one guy or everyone else?

He's far from the only one who had Bufict top five before the season.

Even Mayock has Bufict as his fifth best LB. Frankly I don’t want him or Kuechly in the first. Kuechly, to me. is Sean Lee but slower and less coverage ability. I think we should expect more than that at 15.

I'm not drunk I'm just drinking.

Yeah because making game-changing plays like this define being slow and having little coverage ability.

minimum 3rd.

by Bleediots on Jan 25, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

I'm white and I consider myself athletic

He can tackle and has great technique but the Eagles need something more there. He is a liability in coverage and often gets eaten up in blocks. Big red flags. I see him as a situational player and I think the eagles would be better off going with something raw with more potential and taking a chance with a guy like Burfict.

The eagles have a glaring need at MLB and they need someone who can be a game changer, a playmaker, the x factor. A la Brian Dawkins Potential.

The eagles clearly need more than solid at MLB and they should look at it as an opportunity to find the next Patrick Willis.

by bitterlyhonest on Jan 25, 2012 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

My question is though

If you think Burfict has the higher ceiling ok, but are you honestly sure that our coaching staff would be able to reach that potential? You sound so sure our coaching staff that they would be simply able to reach Burfict’s potential overnight, like its such a sure thing. Dennis Erickson has 2 national championships and was very well regarded as a coach in the NCAA. And he wasn’t able to get through to Burfict. We have an unstable coaching staff right now. I don’t have faith in Juan “Why am I here” Castillo in getting through to Burfict, I don’t have faith in Mike “Nobody” Caldwell that he can get through to Burfict, our defense doesn’t have a stable leader other than Cullen Jenkins (as much as I love Trent Cole and NA, they aren’t going to put anyone in their place like that) and we fell apart like that. Now your saying bring in one of the most unstable red flagged character issue having draft picks of the last decade and expecting it to work like a charm?

Please tell me where you get your confidence and belief in this Philadelphia team because I would love to hear that.

Agreed

I’m a big Floyd fan, he’d be great in this offense. Kendall Wright is another guy I would like, he’d be the perfect fit if Desean leaves.

I'm great like Gatsby.

by Clint Eastwood on Jan 25, 2012 6:12 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'm not as big on Wright

Alot of people say he’d replace DeSean Jackson but Jackson is much faster and I think Wright got overhyped when RGIII’s stock went up. The Eagles really need a big body that can just overmatch corners with their size. Maclin can do anything deep balls and intermediate routes and I love Jackson but I can’t help but dream if Floyd was in there and Maclin was all over the place.

If Jackson stays, and I don’t wanna see him go, then hopefully Riley Cooper or Brent Celek can be better red zone targets.

I’m sick of seeing them march up and down the field to settle for crummy field goals..

Time for efficient red zone offense…

by bitterlyhonest on Jan 25, 2012 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

IMO

Cooper isn’t a great red zone target. He catches with his body to much.

Stephen Hill is a guy I really want. Has high potential and would be a great red zone target.

How do you know that he can’t get off blocks, isn’t strong or fast enough, or won’t be an every down backer. I know for a fact you haven’t watched him play. Also due to better coaching and weight programs in the NFL players generally improve technique and strength; but whatever your probably right, new era scouting is definitely the most reliable source out there.

by JS20 on Jan 25, 2012 11:25 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Okay

I’ve watched him play several times. Since you know everything for a fact I’m sure people’s opinions with actual reasoning are worthless and you know exactly who the eagles should draft and exactly how they’ll turn out because you know everything…

by bitterlyhonest on Jan 26, 2012 8:10 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I knew keeping Laws over Landri, even Hargrove in final cuts was a mistake. Glad to have Landri back, if he signs. He probably could start for a handful of teams the way he played.

I’m not counting on anything with Antonio Dixon. If he breaks out, that’s great. But no one knows that he truly will. The team has waited for so many players to break out when they never did, whether it’s injury or whatever. Not saying cut Dixon, just food for thought.

I also like having Dunlap around. If I remember correctly, I think he blocked a field goal or extra point this season. With a completely healthy o-line, I love the idea of sending the big guy out there on some FG block attempts. That big, powerful frame could be at the very least a distraction for the center, holder, kicker, etc.

I think he’s highly underrated, and could be had for a fairly modest price if he were looking to leave(and let’s face it…No one wants to stay in Oakland.) I really do want to see what Jarrett is capable of, but it would be nice having a guy like that. He’s a great tackler and thats a known quantity.

Jamaal Jackson is under contract...

He would need to be cut for him to leave. I think he’ll be traded.

I read everything up until your draft. It was the same thing that most others have posted for the offseason besides a couple changes. WHY? Are you drafting a Kuechly and MLB after you’re signing a FA MLB?? You’re not the first person to do this, it doesn’t make any sense!
If you want Kuechly, draft him at 15. If you want a FA MLB, you’re not drafting Kuechly at 15, it’s that simple. Pick one or the other. I also don’t understand why eveyrone has us drafting mutiple LB’s, which we def. have to, but no one says which LB’s they’re going to cut in their offseason plan. It’s a good write up, but do a little better job of crossing your T’s and dotting your I’s if you’re gonna attempt these. Make sure you know who’s under contract, and who’s a FA, and be more thorough with your plan. It will get you higher regards in the future.

Hey...let's remember to give this kid some credit.

Good piece of writing, young man. And either you have a very good knowledge of the game for your age or your research very well…either of which can help you attain your goal.

I can’t find too much in the post that I would disagree with. And the draft he laid out is a very good draft and very Eagles-like (minus the Keulchy pick which will hopefully be right)…especially his pick of Rainey, Boykin, Robinson, and Dennis…all of whom have a very good chance to be Eagles next year. I’ve also gone on record for my like of Orson Charles…I guess I’m hoping he will somehow fall to the third because I doubt we would project him high enough to take with a 2.

Excellent post.

A few points

I would be really happy with the LB corps you list in your depth chart. Bringing in Hawthorne, Keuchly, Robinson, and Cole would be perfect. I doubt we bring in four new LB’s, but I would love that corps.

I’d much rather sign Marcel Reese over Jacob Hester. He’s in the same mold as Leonard Weaver.

Also, don’t forget about Clay Harbor. He hasn’t been any kind of world-beater, but I don’t see any reason to spend a high draft pick on a TE. There are more pressing needs than TE. I could see a mid-to-late round pick being used on a TE, but not a second rounder.

Overall though, a pretty nice offseason plan.
