2012 NFL Draft: Mike Mayock Ranks Top Five Linebackers

NEW ORLEANS, LA - JANUARY 06: Courtney Upshaw #41 of the Alabama Crimson Tide talks to the media at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on January 6, 2012 in New Orleans, Louisiana. LSU and Alabama will play in the BCS National Championship on January 9th. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock released his first top five rankings of prospects at every position for the 2012 NFL draft. For Eagles fans, the most notable position of interest is linebacker. Personally, I'd like to see more than just a rookie, even if it's a highly touted one, brought in to shore up the LB corps.... but there's no doubt that stocking the position with highly rated young talent is a good thing.

Linebacker has seemed to have become the next wide receiver for this team. People clamored for years for this team to get WRs and finally they used 2nd and 1st round picks back to back on the position and solved it. The Eagles have never drafted a first round LB in the Andy Reid era.

So here's Mayock's list of the top five prospects in this upcoming draft. Let's finally solve this problem.

Linebacker

1. Courtney Upshaw, Alabama
2. Luke Kuechly, Boston College
3. Dont'a Hightower, Alabama
4. Zach Brown, North Carolina
5. Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State

Courtney Upshaw is a 3-4 OLB who is playing DE in the 4-3 defense down at the Senior Bowl. I figured I should say that before people started freaking out over Upshaw.

he’s not our guy, a good game and combine could shoot him into the top 10-13 range

Yup. It’s too bad, that guy is built like a fucking machine.

Yeah I know..

Upshaw’s pretty much a pass rusher out of the 3-4.

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

The Obvious pick is LK

if it’s possible and he’s still around later, then nab Burfict.

DH is also good but only if LK is gone

Surprised he has Burfict at 5

Mayock usually values “hard worker” types and drops the headcases.

The more I learn about this LB class, the more I think we’re just going to sign a free agent and draft another project. Kuechly and Dont’a both seem like they’re going to be reaches at 15, and there’s no way Reid reaches for a LB. As long as we get a legit starting MLB though, I’ll be happy.

I hope

There are no good tackles left at the #15 pick. When it comes to drafting tackles ( well linemen in general) Andy has a bit of an addiction.
That’s about the only way we get actual talent at linebacker .

Down the road, sure, but not next season. Drafting an OT means moving Herremans back to LG, and Mathis onto the bench. I don’t think any OT available at 15 is good enough to justify sitting arguably the best guard in football last year. Not to mention that it would mean our C-RG-RT have 2 years NFL experience between them… not something you want on Vick’s blindside. Drafting an OT just doesn’t seem like a move that makes us better this year. If Mudd wants to find some undersized linemen in the late rounds as a project, I’m fine with that. We just have bigger needs to fill in the early rounds.

To think that if DeSean never had broke out that season and became such a weapon, we might never have drafted Maclin that next season.

Well I have the feeling that Jackson might not be back…plus the Maclin Jackson combo seemed to lose its luster this past season.

Why? I highly doubt one had anything to do with the other. The Eagles would have really liked Maclin regardless of what happened with DeSean.

Reid had long been pretty pat with his wide receivers. Year in and out Reid consistently said the same thing about his talent-less WR group “We think we got a good group of guys.” And its no secret that Reid got far more than what he expected out of Jackson. I think seeing that having a competent WR for McNabb at the time to throw to made him change his mind.

If Jackson doesn’t have the impact that he has that season, I think it’s more likely than not that Maclin is in another teams jersey.

I think that’s total bullshit. This goes back to the whole “he doesn’t care about ‘x’ position” thing, and I think its completely ludicrous to assume.
