Marty Mornhinweg Out Of The Running In Raiders' Coaching Search, According To Report

CSN Bay Area is reporting that Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is out of the running in the Oakland Raiders search for a new head coach. This news comes despite earlier reports that he was considered a "favorite," or "serious contender" or whatever other phrase reporters chose to use to hedge their report.

The report says that the Raiders have narrowed their choices down to Broncos' DC Dennis Allen, Packers Assistant Head Coach Winston Moss and a "mystery candidate.

Mornhinweg and Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr are out. Apparently they didn't get the memo that Marty is the next Bill Belichick.

So it appears that unless the Colts get interested in Mornhinweg, which has seemed to be mostly just speculation, that he'll be back as the Eagles offensive coordinator next season. So that settles offensive coordinator, but as to the question of whether Juan Castillo will be back as defensive coordinator? No one is saying, not even Juan. As it stands now, the Eagles have only one official opening on their staff, secondary coach.

So...

I guess it’s another season of “Don’t roll out on passing plays, Michael Vick, you’re a POCKET PASSER NOW. Oh, don’t worry about the massive hits you’re taking, 1 out of 5 of those will net us 15 yard penalties now!”

It’s not that I want him gone more than I’m just so down and disappointed in the team that I take a negative spin on everything.

Whats the point of keeping him around

if he’s only going to get a head coaching job next year? We have been hearing about him getting his shot for HC for about 2 years now, do you really think this offense is only being held together by Marty? Andy can do fine with Vick (along with our current QB coach) without Marty. If Marty could just changed the Formations he ran out of and the situations he ran on he would be a GREAT OC, but we have had the same problems since he’s come. Don’t give me the most points in franchise history argument either since we had Westbrook as our most explosive weapon the whole time in the regime before Marty.

If we sure up some of our weaknesses … LB, FS, SS … and keep a healthy QB … no reason as to why we cant make a run at the SB this year. he is a big key to that offense .. he calls the plays, he has made our QBs what and who they are. If we dont make a STRONG run next year, ANDY is gone, new OC, new DC, etc right on down the line and its another 2-3 yrs of mediocrity until we get continuity back. You dont want to disrupt this team any more than neccessary this offseason. We did enough of that last season and look what it did.

I agree with that premise, but.
he has made our QBs what and who they are.

This can’t be for Mcnabb, Mike Vick sadly regressed last year and in his breakout year that was more Vick than coaching (specially since he was taking reps as starter). Andy has said on numerous occasions that Vick knew what he needed to work on coming out of jail and dedicated himself to the process which is the true reason he “transformed”. Now Marty deserves “his share” of the credit but so do alot of others (Doug Pederson, Pat Shurman) in Vicks progress. I personally feel Marty has benefited as much (if not more) from being an Eagle as the Eagles have from him.

Marty has made mediocre QBs better than they were.... examples:

Michael Vick – was never a pocket passer
Donovan McNabb – sucked after leaving
Kevin Kolb – sucked after leaving
AJ Feely – sucked after leaving
Jeff Garcia – sucked after leaving
Mike Kafka – from what we have seen, is better than we all expected. I thought he should have gotten the start over Vince Young, but the team decided to play the “we pay him more so he is going to earn it” card.

Not to say he is the only one to make this all happen but he had a big hand in it.

I dont know man, I guess we differ on opinions on Marty

I think ill take Reid over Marty for QB’s. Reid was invovled in all those QB’s named.
Mike Vick- Had just as big of role as Marty did in his changed and Andy Reid
Don- started sucking while he was here, and then he went to the redskins
Kevin kolb- Sucked while he was here (for my money)
AJ Feeley- Not good period
Jeff Garcia- was old when he came here and his best years were in San Fran so they could say “He sucked after leaving the 9ers”.
Mike Kafka- Jury still out and he hasnt shown as much as Kolb did.

ok, the giants suck.

Reid is also credited with the QB success we have. Vick’s change in lifestyle definately helped him. In Kolbs first 2 games he threw 300+ yrds … never done by first year QB and showed enough potential to sucker the Cards to deal out a #2 and DRC! cant say he sucked while he was here. Feely had his moments to shine when Don went down, and he pulled us threw a few tough games. Garcia filled in VERY NICELY when Don went down and took us to the playoffs. Don .. he just flat out sucked after philly.

There is no question that we have a good QB machine here in Philly. That is a given.

Lets get over Kolb throwing for over 300 yards on his first two starts

Yes it’s true, but this is a passing league now more then ever before. That’s why all the passing records are going down now. So it’s not even special right now with passing when yards are involved. Every team is better at passing now since the DB can’t lay a finger on the WR and nobody, I mean NOBODY can touch a QB anymore.

Yes he did accomplish the feat and was the first in doing so….but it’s a weak argument for Kolb.

He was good enough to be the bait we needed him for.

I'm not arguing that point

He was good enough, or perceived good enough.

I’m a Kolb fan, so I think he’ll be OK in Arizona, but he’s really proven nothing yet.

by slandog on Jan 24, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

I always felt those two games were a little “Sicklic” for kolb:
1. Desean Jackson had like 150 yards in both of those games off long td catches. (Kolb did hit him in stride on the long Td plays against the Chiefs and Saints tho.)
2. we got beat pretty good against the saints even with his 300 yards (even though he doesnt play D, he couldnt score with brees either).
3. I think coming from Reid’s system helped Kolb’s trade value over Marty.
4. Feeley did some things good.
5.Garcia was probably the best QB we had other than #5,#7.

Jeff Garcia

was always a decent starter early on. I think age caught up with him more then not having Marty working with him. When he was with the 49ers he was a pretty decent starting QB.

Im glad

Do u really want to bring in a new OC and have to learn a new scheme?! Nxt yr we need to adapt from this yrs mistakes and overcome them. Not waste another yr learning a new system. Plus Marty deserves better. U get 1,maybe 2 yrs in Oak to prove yourself. Then its on to another HC.

The last three Eagle playoff game rushing stats are way different

2009 against Cardinals 16 total rushes by RBs
2010 against Cowboys 10 total
2011 ……………..Packers 13 total
Hell, THE GIANTS Brdshaw rushed 20 times on Sun which is more than Eagles total RB rushes in last 5 Eagle playoff games. So Marty would be a bad choice

It’s almost a given that Allen will get the gig. Kinda surprised he was even a candidate after just one year at DC.

by Route36 on Jan 24, 2012 4:06 PM EST reply actions

if Bradshaw gets 10 carries, it changes the game and outcome completely....

probally 7 points not scored, a few drives (more 3 and outs) more passes could lead to an INT, 49ers D would not be as tired….

by Tydm69 on Jan 24, 2012 5:04 PM EST reply actions

There’s just no reason to believe that. You’re making assumptions based on nothing.

same goes for Gore!!!!

less carries means more passes for Alex and he was bad with 50% completed passes. That would have changed the game…
