Philadelphia Eagles Offseason Priority Checklist (Pre-Draft):
*Name Juan Castillo the Defensive Coordinator and move on:
Keep the rest of the Defensive Coaching the same and hire the "next great" Defensive Backs Coach. Is Brian Dawkins playing next season?
*Let DeSean Jackson go into Free Agency:
I am not saying let him go completely, but you have to temper his expectations. He does not deserve the kind of money he is demanding. Let him discover that on his own, and if a team deems him worthy of such a deal; good luck to both of them. If he realizes his real worth, then I think it makes sense for the Eagles to bring him back.
*Trade Asante Samuel:
I am not expecting a king’s ransom in-return. If we could get a 3rd round draft pick this season, I would be happy. I am guessing that we settle for a 4th round draft pick this season and a 4th round draft pick next season, but with an escalator to become a 3rd round pick next season based on performance. Possible suitors: Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, San Francisco, and Tampa Bay.
*Cut the following current Eagles players:
QB-Vince Young, RB-Ronnie Brown, WR-Steve Smith, WR-Johnnie Lee Higgins, OL-King Dunlap, OL-Ryan Harris, DL-Victor Abiamiri, DL-Trevor Laws, DL-Juqua Parker, DB-Jamar Wall, and DB-Marlin Jackson
*Resign the following current Eagles Free Agents to short term deals:
FB-Owen Schmitt, OL-Evan Mathis, DL-Antonio Dixon, and LB-Akeem Jordan.
*Free Agent Acquisitions
Offense:
WR (if DeSean Jackson is not resigned)-Robert Meachem (NO)-With a full workload, Meachem could finally reach his full potential. His skill set would pair very well with Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant. He also has a nose for the red zone, which is something we are lacking from the position.
TE-John Carlson (SEA)-He did not play a single snap in 2011, and he will come cheaply. We are starting to see a lot more 2 TE sets in the NFL, and with Celek and Carlson, the Eagles would have 2 solid red zone options at TE.
OL-Demetrius Bell (BUF)-Could we steal another cornerstone of the Bills Offensive Line? We were able to pry Jason Peters away from them a few years ago. Now, we look to get another physically gifted Tackle from them, thus allowing Todd Herremans to move back to his natural position-Guard. Bell would fit perfectly into Howard Mudd’s system. This move would also allow us to plug Evan Mathis in as a utility Offensive Lineman, thus giving us great depth.
Defense:
LB-David Hawthorne (SEA)-He isn’t the big name Middle Linebacker that Eagles fans want to bring to Philly, but I think he gives the Eagles the best bang for their buck. He is a very talented player, who plays the game aggressively. He is solid against the run, and he is very underrated in pass coverage (Philly fans should remember the 77 yard INT for a TD from this past season). And, he comes to us at a very reasonable price.
LB-Erin Henderson (MIN)-Here we add another young, and budding, defensive player to our linebacking unit. Henderson, the younger brother of E.J. Henderson, had a very productive season in 2011. The Eagles would be wise to grab him now before his career really takes off. Henderson plays with a great deal of intensity, and he has all of the physical tools to become a very good Strongside Linebacker.
DB-Cortland Finnegan (TEN)-I would absolutely love this move, and I doubt that it would ever happen. But…imagine this guy as our Slot Corner. We would have Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers Cromartie on the outside, while Finnegan roamed in the slot. He is perfect for this position, as he is solid in coverage, can blitz the quarterback, and he likes to defend against the run. With his nasty streak, he would make for a hell of a Slot Corner for this team, which is something they sorely need.
If the Philadelphia Eagles were to pull of these moves, they would put themselves in a position to draft the very best players on the board in the draft. They could draft a WR in the 1st round, or a QB in the 2nd. Essentially, they could do anything they wanted to do. None of the proposed moves above are crazy. We are not going into another offseason frenzy. We are adding the right pieces to build around an already strong core. Other than the Finnegan deal, I really could see all of these moves happening. If the Eagles were smart, they would invest heavily in this position. Regardless, make these moves happen and let the draft dictate what you want to do.

Higgins is not on this team
Why cut Dunlap? He’s our best backup lineman.
Ryan Harris is not on this team.
Jamar Wall is not on this team
Marlin Jackson is not on this team

Not to mention you can’t “cut” some of these players since they’re already FA’s.

Glad you guys handled that
Now that it’s the offseason and we might be losing DeSean, we might actually want Johnnie Lee Higgins back, and we might want to take another look at Ryan Harris in camp if his back holds up.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring it Home for Jerome.
Marlin jackson, ryan harris, jamar wall haven’t been on the team for months. Why would you get ride of king dunlap? He Is are best back up O Lineman.

OK
Just disagree on a couple points:
1) DeSean has apologized for being a distraction this past season, and has hinted that he’d accept a franchise tag if given one.
Is he being sincere about being sorry? Probably not. He and Drew Rosenhaus know that right now, with DeSean having turned in a sorry 2011 performance, the Eagles are holding all the cards. DeSean can test free agent waters, sure, but no team is going to give him anything close to “Larry Fitzgerald money.” Except maybe Washington. Dan Snyder would give up his firstborn for DeSean, probably. Anyway, point is, DeSean knows he has to kick ass next season to get his dollars up. Why not franchise him and use him for all he’s worth next year? No sense risking him sign with a team that could potentially be a roadblock to our playoff success.
2) Don’t cut Dunlap. He’s come a long way, and backup tackles are a commodity in this league.
3) Re-signing Akeem Jordan is iffy. Depends how much he’d want, but he hasn’t really done enough to warrant a multiyear deal. If you ask me, that entire linebacking corps needs to be blown up and rebuilt from scratch, starting with free agency.
4) Hawthorne and Henderson are interesting, but this team is in desperate need of a sure-thing stud linebacker, especially since it looks like we’re going to continue running the Wide 9. Finnegan is a punk, a personal foul machine. Although he’d bring a sense of nastiness to an otherwise soft defense, the Eagles won’t want any more negative press by signing a man who specifically stated that he aspired to be the NFL’s dirtiest player. But, like you said, it probably won’t happen anyway.
And yes this is Philly, you welcome to come check us
What cards are the Eagles holding?
Isn’t their only choice to franchise him, and pay him top 5 money, or whatever, or cut him loose?
The Eagles are holding no cards.
And Snyder is backing a truckload of gold into Desean’s driveway as we speak. He’s gone.
God Damn you, Andy Reid.
The fat queen has failed us again. Reid must go.
They could use the threat of the franchise tag
to start talks on a long-term deal. I might be wrong, but they could use it to work out a sign-and-trade too.
The franchise tag, though, gives the Eagles the option to basically say “you’re not walking unless we let you.” (I think)
They might let him. But it means they’re holding the cards.
DeSean knows a one-year deal where he can pocket several million more than he has made to date, and head into free agency coming off a better deal is a good situation to be in. But part of me thinks he was playing this season in survival mode, and would play next season in survival mode too if he doesn’t get a deal with a big signing bonus, so franchising him is playing with fire.
More and more I’m becoming intrigued by trying to get Bowe or Colston or someone, and then franchising DeSean
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring it Home for Jerome.
A few points
1. Juan is not a great D coach. If better are on the market than go get them.
2. I love Dawkins however, I’m not so sure he’s coaching material. You can’t teach go vertical over an O lineman with a mid air superman for the strip sack fumble recovery.
3. DeSean if he hits FA status will command a lot of money. Think of a team such as St Louis. They are starting guys who probably wouldn’t make a roster on teams like GB / Philly / SD / Dal.
4. Nice Cuts however, I say keep King around. He’s developed into a nice 3rd tackle.
5. Rule #1 of Signing a WO… Stay away from (Inert team’s name here) productive #3 WO.
6. The team has 2 very nice TEs on the roster now. Why would you get a guy who is coming off an injury?
7. Todd had a nice year playing RT. He’s proved durable tough nosed, & versatile enough to stick anywhere on the line. Also Mathis had a stealer year at LG why not attempt to bring him back. He wants to be here and wants to keep working for Mudd.
8. I don’t want “innigean” on this team he is a cancer. (On a side note who knows why his name is “inniegan”?)
"Learning to eat soup with a knife"
Why do you say this?
5. Rule #1 of Signing a WO… Stay away from (Inert team’s name here) productive #3 WO.
The scenario reminds me of Kevin Curtis. We brought him in, and outside of injuries he was very productive. As long as you you’re not getting a superstar, I don’t see why not.

The defensive scheme is iffy at best.
Cortland finnegan is the dirtiest player to ever get his ass kicked by a wide receiver. Do not want or need that piece of trash.
Hawthorne, pretty sure he was the reason that Seattle traded/ benched Aaron curry. So that won’t happen either.
And Juan more thing, we need a real DC. Jack del rio is available and ,IMO, a huge upgrade Castillo .

AR should have to wear a Flava Flav necklace until he learns how to manage a clock.

Fuck Cortland Finnegan right in the face

I don't see it as likely
But Hawthorne, Henderson and Finnegan would be an awesome haul lol

Trading Asante is a horrible idea
He has consistently been one of the best corners in the league each year with the Eagles, and he gets picks which is a repeatable skill (unlike recovering fumbles). The defense sucked at pass defense and getting turnovers, why trade your best corner and turnover generator? If someone has to go its DRC.
