Football players' financial fumbles hold lessons - Economic Times

Juan Castillo and Brett Veach did spend a few minutes chatting up Texas LB Keenan Robinson. He played MLB and SAM for the Longhorns. He measured in at 6’3, 240 and has the game of a SAM. Better in coverage than against the run.

What to look for at the Senior Bowl | National Football Post
There is plenty of value in 11-on-11 team work and 7-on-7 drills throughout the week, however my favorite part of practice is watching players in isolated one-on-one periods. Pass rush, WRs vs. DBs, LBs vs. RBs, etc. We get to check out CBs in press-coverage vs. WRs or a rush end vs. a left tackle in one-on-one pass rush. The best drills to test technique, leverage and see who can play a physical brand of football.

Giants' run enough to make stomachs turn

Football players’ financial troubles are all too common. Almost anyone in their early 20s is not responsible enough to handle the kind of money these kids get, and if they have no strong adult in their lives to help them, there’s little chance they will figure it out until it’s too late.

Throw in the fact that most of them think they’ll get big bucks when they sign their next contract, and the bravado which comes with playing the game almost requires squandering your money as a sign of your self-confidence, and the pattern is as predictable as it is sad. Is it any wonder these guys feel exploited, even though many of them make for a few years more money than most of us will make is 30?

I have no sympathy for football players who get into financial problems

At the end of the day, every single one of these professional athletes will earn more in a year than the average person. The minimum salary for a practice squad member has been £88,400 for the season. Regardless of your profession, be it an american football player, a physician, a worker at a conveniece store etc it is your responsibility to look after your own money. At the end of the day, if they become bankrupt they will have to do what everyone else does to make money, get a proper job.

Hmm not sure

how much 88400 pounds comes out to but I agree and feel the same. If anything, and they may already do, but the league should mandate a financial ed class when new draftees come in the league.

I know they hold seminars for them on how to handle their money, success, and plan for the future.

they are assigned an FA

but it’s up to them to use them. They however are not allowed to use a non union approved advisor.

At least one more year of Andy and Juan. If they don't win it all they both better be gone!

No way Eagles draft a LB in the first round 2012.

We will see if Spags was in the right place at the right time in the Gmens SB run. Or was that the fluke year and he really is just mediocre.

Every mock I’ve seen have the eagles taking the BC linebacker. So its looking like we won’t take him then

That Roob article really encapsulates what I’m feeling. Its one thing if the Giants were 11-5 or 12-4, rolling into the playoffs. But no, they sucked for most of the year, then got lucky. This part really nails it:

It’s not like the Giants are some powerhouse team. If they were, maybe this would be easier to take. But they were 7-7 a few weeks ago and 1-5 in their last six games, and they had just lost to Rex Grossman for the second time in two months.

Here we go again

Not ONE TIME dude Reuben ever say the word “luck.” Time to stop saying that the Giants got lucky and just face it; they’re a better team than the Eagles and played better when it mattered most. The Eagles laid down against the Seahawks and the Cardinals, and it cost them the season.

Let us take a look at another one of his comments from his article.

If Jason Avant doesn’t fumble in Buffalo. If Jeremy Maclin hangs onto that 4th-down pass from Mike Kafka in Atlanta. If Alex Henery kicks a 33-yard field goal against the 49ers. If Nnamdi didn’t jump offsides on a John Skelton incomplete pass on third-and-10 in the fourth quarter against the Cards.

If. If. If. If. If.

Stop making excuses and saying that the Eagles are a better team than the Giants because of the end of the regular season. It’s a blatant lie. The only team the Eagles beat that the Giants didn’t during the regular season was the Redskins. The Giants beat the Patriots, Bills, and the Cardinals. The Eagles didn’t. The Giants also lost to Green Bay and New Orleans. Both are teams that are better than any opponent the Eagles defeated this year.

They crushed the Falcons (who the Eagles lost to) in the first round 24-2. Crushed. Then they go on the road and beat Green Bay EASILY in the first round of the playoffs. Then they go to 49ers and beat the #2 seed the week after beating the #1 seed. In the last two weeks, they have beaten teams that defeated them during the regular season. So obviously they’re playing at a much higher level than they were during the regular season. Therefore, your argument that the Eagles “are a better team” than the Giants right now because the Eagles got it together and played better at the end of the season is amazingly stupid. The Giants are playing their best football of the entire season too, and they’re doing it against much better teams.

Reuben agrees:

That they’re just better than us.

What hurts the most, what makes every Philly native sick to their stomach, is that deep down, we know they’re right.

So just stop with your garbage. No one agrees. I fucking hate the Giants more than any other team in the NFL, but this year I hated the Eagles MUCH MORE because they have the talent to win Superbowls and quite frankly more talent than the Giants. I hope every player on the Eagles is looking at the Giants right now and feeling disgusted with themselves for producing this huge shit pile for a season.

Prediction: the 3-4 will be out of style in two years.
So no, I will not shut up about stupidity.

I don’t care if he didn’t say luck. The Giants got lucky. They are not better than the Eagles, they just got the bounces when it mattered the most.

I’m not saying the Eagles played great. But they were just a play away from being in the playoffs. That’s the definition of luck. One more bounce our way, and it could have been us.

The Falcons were a crappy team, and way different that the team we played- in their warm nice stadium early in the year- as opposed to the Giants who got them on a cold day in Giants stadium late in the year. That’s a big difference, and lucky.

They beat Green Bay who decided to not catch any balls, randomly turn the ball over, and miss wide open receives by a top 3 QB. That’s luck.

They beat the NIners when Smith decided to regress, and were handed 10 points by one guy. That’s luck.

So will refuse to ignore the evidence that the Giants or lucky, or they are better than the Eagles. If you don’t like it, then just ignore me. I don’t care if nobody agrees with me- I base my beliefs on evidence, not majority support (unlike you apparently). So continue to ignore the evidence and spout your garbage.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 24, 2012 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

Lol what evidence? That they are in the Superbowl? Nice evidence. They suck but they just beat the teams with the two best records in the NFC.

Prediction: the 3-4 will be out of style in two years.
So no, I will not shut up about stupidity.

I don’t care if he didn’t say luck. The Giants got lucky. They are not better than the Eagles, they just got the bounces when it mattered the most.

We split our games this year. They won one more game than we did against a tougher schedule. If you want to call the Arizona game a gift then they still won as many games as we did against a tougher schedule. I can’t see where we can argue that we’re better than them. We’re close, but not better.

I’m not saying the Eagles played great. But they were just a play away from being in the playoffs. That’s the definition of luck. One more bounce our way, and it could have been us.

Our own mistakes cost us a playoff bid, not our bad luck or the Giant’s good luck.

The Falcons were a crappy team, and way different that the team we played- in their warm nice stadium early in the year- as opposed to the Giants who got them on a cold day in Giants stadium late in the year. That’s a big difference, and lucky.

Giants were the higher seed. How is it lucky that they get the home game? That’s the rules.

They beat Green Bay who decided to not catch any balls, randomly turn the ball over, and miss wide open receives by a top 3 QB. That’s luck.

No, that’s the Packers doing their best Eagles impersonation and not taking care of their own business. Giants also played well that game.

They beat the NIners when Smith decided to regress, and were handed 10 points by one guy. That’s luck.

Smith didn’t shine but he did not give the game away. The Giants do have a good pash rush. Also, other teams making mistakes is not luck. Niners had a chance to stop the Giants after the fumble but instead gave up a TD.

Look, nobody hates the Giants more than I do. Nobody. But they are a team that had a good enough season to get to the playoffs and then got hot, played well, and got in the Super Bowl. It pisses me off too because they played horribly at times during the season. It is what it is. All we can do is root for the Pats. Either way it will be over in a couple of weeks and we can focus on the off season.

Go Eagles!

Kuechly......

Honestly, the last thing Philly needs is yet another Rookie Linebacker. I think Andy addresses that need in free agency. Maybe go after Tulloch (Lions) or Connor (Panthers) on the inside, Brooks (49ers), or Woodyard (Broncos) on the outside.

by Helgrenze on Jan 24, 2012 11:49 AM EST reply actions

honestly … and not to sound greedy … but I think both. A guy like Tulloch is ok/good. He is not great. A guy like Kuechly has potential (from what I hear – I am not a big college football follower) to be great and a guy like Tulloch can mentor him. And both should be attainable. Assuming Kuechly is still available.

I agree. They aboslutely need both. There is no other way around it. Someone for now and the future. Every LB they currently have are backups at best.

Linebackers are overrated...

And not an integral part to a defense. Just ask the Eagles, they’re smarter than everyone else.

Still with crappy CBs play Cruz got lose for 10 catches and 142 yards and against the Ravens with some very good LBs the Patriots TEs caught 12 catches for 153 yards or BGE ran for 4.5 ypc and 1 td

My point is that even the 2 best ILBs in the NFL would have helped against Cruz and Nicks (outside of NE, what other team have 2 TEs as there main passing threat?) and the Ravens star LBs wasnt much of an answer against Gron and Hernandez

by Anders Jensen on Jan 24, 2012 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Yeh but thats an out of text counter dude…..so because LBs got beaten in a game they arent an upgrade to backup players? So Vick throws an INT we need to replace him?
