The Linc - Let The Castillo Speculation Commence

Report: Steve Spagnuolo, GM Billy Devaney out in St. Louis
Ten wins in three seasons apparently won't be enough for Rams Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo to keep his job.

For Eagles, Now What? | Eagletarian | 01/01/2012
If Reid is leaving, a lot of players are going to be really, really shocked. But it wouldn’t be at all shocking if the Eagles decide not to put a happy face on Juan Castillo’s year as defensive coordinator, even after allowing just 46 points over the final four games.

Will Castillo return to Eagles? | Philadelphia Inquirer | 01/01/2012
Given the opportunity to endorse Castillo's return the last two Mondays, Reid summed up his feelings by saying to reporters: "You all know how I feel about Juan." Indeed, but the final decision may not be Reid's.

Miller: Castillo Has To Go
Juan Castillo may have coached the defense well enough to keep his job, but that's certainly not a given thanks to an 8-8 season.

Philadelphia Eagles notebook: rookie kicker Alex Henery finishes up strong | lehighvalleylive.com
"The game finally slowed down," he said after kicking a pair of field goals in the Birds' 34-10 thumping of the Washington Redskins at Lincoln Financial Field Sunday. "You know how people say how everything goes so fast in the NFL compared to college -- and it sure did for me. That was the biggest thing for me. Once things slowed down I was hitting the ball better and I got into a groove."

Eagles' offensive line coach Mudd to return - Football Wire - SunHerald.com
Walking out of the Eagles' locker room following their season-ending win over the Redskins, Howard Mudd was dressed to ride. The Eagles offensive line coach had his motorcycle boots on and his helmet in hand, but he was not riding off into the sunset. Before the game, Mudd told his linemen that he planned on returning for his 39th season as an NFL coach.

Let’s promote him to GM, he’s never done that before, he deserves a shot at it. We’ll be fine.

For what my opinion is worth. I think it is a big deal. All I’ve heard and thought since draft day is how do you take a kicker with your 4th round pick. Well if he kicks like this for the next 10 years I would say it has a possibility of being one of the best picks in the entire draft.

What I was gonna say. If Henery makes his kicks and Akers makes his, we still lose by one point

I hope Castillo stays. The last four games provide evidence to me that the defense can play consistent, quality football. When the season was done, the team finished 10th overall in points allowed on defense. That isn’t bad.

Spags comes in and Juan goes to lb coach….

I don’t want him coaching the LB corps. I want a proven coach with a history of making guys studs.

name one other lb coach in the nfc east right now?

Before you look it up think about this. Juan played and coached lb’s before. Hr will be teaching them spags technique so all he has to do is teach. Which by all accounts the players like him and listen.

by VRFC8 on Jan 2, 2012 8:36 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Your argument makes sense but look at it from my perspective. Our LBs have sucked for years and years I don’t want anyone but a proven guy to take over with a few high round draft selections to beef up the corps.

"Learning to eat soup with a knife"

but look at the "talent" he worked with this yr

Three 7th rounders, a 4th rounder, and an udfa. Id say given all that they played pretty well down the stretch.

by VRFC8 on Jan 2, 2012 8:43 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

That's not saying much for our LBs

Granted, I took awhile to figure out the LB situation. But the fact that he even turned that group into a productive LB corp has to be worth something.

I couldn't agree more

He was a linebacker and could learn under spags for a a couple years until spags leaves again for another hc job. Then Juan would be ready for the dc job.

He's had a few nice weeks

In a row where he’s stopped some hot teams so I see that logic but,

In one hand you’ve got a proven veteran who’s one of the best in the game at what he dose with a track record that goes back a long way. Working under future hall of fame coordinator & even coaching a Superbowl defense.

On the other hand you’ve got a guy who’s shown a lot of charisma and worked as an offensive line coach many years but, wanted a change and, may have a future upside to him but, players have spoken up about how they have had to help him & get him schooled up in the ways of an NFL defense that you can hope improves……

After spags is fired and he isn’t signed by us. I say a day and a half.

Panic will happen instant. The healing of him not being here will take as little as week 4 next year or as long at TBD.

who knows maybe the dynamic jew-o will strike again

Spags fired while he is already at the airport heading to philly.

by VRFC8 on Jan 2, 2012 8:40 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Birds should aggressively seek Spags. I’m glad GMEN made playoffs rather than Cowgirls, bc NYG are now less likely to go after Spags. If they had been eliminated, a change at DC may have been made. This is especially true if Caughlin were to be fired, and a new head coach were to bring in a new staff. But tons of injuries provide Giants brass with a valid excuse to explain mediocre season by D. Couple that with the fact that their brass is notoriously loyal to coaches (a trait shared by Eagles brass but bemoaned by Birds fans.)

Anyway, the Eagles are now the clear preference for Spags (which was probably true, even if NY were seeking him.) I, for one, would love to see us land Spags.
Ideally, the Eagles could find some job to appease Castillo and reward his loyalty, although any other D coaching job would be a demotion, and Mudd deservedly had first dibs on O line coaching. I would expect Juan to get a position that could be seen as a “career shift” rather than demotion, such as director of player
Personal. Of course, Juan now has experience coaching both sides of the ball, and a lofty (albeit phony) position as Assistant Head Coach could be shoveled to the fans as a promotion, thereby allowing Eagles brass to avoid their greatest fear:
Admitting they were wrong about giving the DC job to Castillo.

If Spags cannot be lured, Juan deserves another shot as DC. His style clearly meshed with that of Washburn late in the season. Growing pains were to be expected as Castillo had never before coached D at any level. But
I’d agree with the millions of Reid-haters that such a bold change, and its accompanied growing pains, were inappropriate for a franchise that was “ALL IN.”

Bottom line: most fans who now demand Reid’s firing demanded the same prior to the season. Therefore, their judgement of Reid’s 2011 performance is skewed. I’ll get blasted fir saying this, but their opinion is moot

If Spags cannot be hired, give Andy and Juan another shot. 2012 begins with a clean slate, so they won’t be constantly trying to desperately salvage a 1-3 season (historically, only 5% of 1-3 teams make the playoffs.)

What’s the worst that can happen, my fellow Birds lovers? The Eagles begin 2012 with little adjustment to how they ended 2011?

We should be so lucky…wake up, this team is a serious contender.

Tackles are actually pretty good and they fell in our laps. Dixon and landri. Two big bodied tough players. Both are under 25/26 I believe. DE I agree hunt looks good for situational rusher, graham needs to step up big. I see us drafting a de somewhere after the first 2 rounds. I want us to go lb, lb, , wr/corner or corner, lb, lb if the first rd talent at lb is gone.

by VRFC8 on Jan 2, 2012 8:55 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

True.

But Dixon isn’t the best fit for current system. However I will reserve speculation til the DC situation is resolved
