Eagles 2012 Schedule Is Set

PITTSBURGH - AUGUST 18: Head coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers talks to head coach Andy Reid of the Philadelphia Eagles prior to the preseason game on August 18, 2011 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

While we won't know the dates for a few months, we do know where and who the Eagles will be playing next year by virtue of their second place finish in the NFC East. In addition to playing the NFC East home and away, here are the Eagles opponents for next season.

Home

Falcons, Panthers, Ravens, Bengals and Lions

Away

Saints, Buccaneers, Browns, Steelers and Cardinals

Obviously it's almost impossible to tell how good any of those teams will be next year. As we've seen this season, teams you expect to be awful (49ers, Bengals) are good and teams you expect to be postseason contenders (Eagles, Chargers, Jets) aren't. But certainly you can expect that New Orleans and Pittsburgh on the road will both be tough.

The home schedule includes five 2011 playoff teams while the away schedule only has two. Despite the Eagles home record in recent years, you would rather play your tough games at home...

YAY the fucking Bears aren't on the schedule.

That’s one demoralizing, frustrating, season-derailing loss we won’t have to deal with in 2012.

nice. New Orleans has to be the road trip to go on next year, unless its on christmas or something. Carolina might be a must see game at home. never know the next time cam newton will come to philly. would be fun to watch

Not about the schedule

But as far as the draft is concerned, the worst-case scenario came to fruition last night.

ARI and DAL pick ahead of us in the first round. Then in the second round, DAL picks ahead of us again, but the ARI pick that we own cycles all the way down to 51.

So DAL has 14 and 45. And we have picks 15, 46, and 51.

Just a little more salt in the wound of this painfully mediocre/disappointing season.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 2, 2012 9:55 AM EST reply actions

yep, missing the playoffs by just one game AND getting the worst possible draft pick we could’ve gotten without making the playoffs really is the most miserable finish.

by MikeCampy on Jan 2, 2012 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly

I guess the only bright spot is the lousy Cowboys finished where they belong… behind us.

But that’s only a small bright spot considering they benefit a lot from it in the draft.

You can’t play every game as if what you’re playing for is the opportunity to play tomorrow; aka, the “don’t ruin our draft pick!” crowd. Play to win, get your players reps, help build cohesion, get a winning spirit and positive off-field attitude going… and that will do you a lot more good going into next season than picking one or two spots higher in the draft. It’s about more than “momentum.”

by EagleinDC on Jan 2, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

You can completely create a new life in the time between the last game of this season and the first game of next season. Higher draft placement is more likely to help the team in the long run.

One or two or three spots in the first round, for the Eagles, is probably not resulting in too big a change in the results or who is drafted. Eagles going for LB is a high probability of panning out (should they go for it) even with the teams ahead of us.

Do you really think it’s likely that the impact of a few wins at the end of a lost season from 9 months in the past will be greater than having earlier picks, especially if we miss out on a top tier prospect by a pick or two?

There is going to be a fair amount of change again on this roster again this offseason with a pretty high likelihood the Eagles have 8-9 new starters next year in Sept including at WR, CB, LB, and S. Add TE to that list if they don’t sign Celek.

by MG77 on Jan 2, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Celek is under contract until 2016, so we don't have to worry about that

http://www.eaglescap.com/Players/BrentCelek.html

That means that the offence will essentially be the same except for maybe DeSean being gone. Changes need to be made of defence for sure, DRC at corner and 2 new LBs and a safety for starters, but it’s not like this team needs a complete overhaul.

by davidbt11 on Jan 2, 2012 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

There might be a few other changes on offense too because Schmitt & Mathis are FA. End up with 2-3 new starters including maybe a position change (shifting Herremans back to LG if Mathis departs)

Going to be a lot of changes on the defense-side though for the 3rd straight offseason. Rolle might be the only guy who sticks. At least 2 new starts at LB, 1 new starter at S, one at CB, and my bet is one at DT.

by MG77 on Jan 2, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Schmitt might go but he's not a huge part of our offence, I wouldn't even call him a starter

Mathis is a guy I’m worried about losing but considering how much his play has improved under Mudd, assuming he stays, I think he’d jump at the change of coming back here. Unless a clear upgrade becomes available I’d be surprised if we don’t have the same o-line again next year.

Defence will see changes, but it’s not the number of new players that bothers me, it’s where they’ll be playing. We get 2 or 3 new starters pretty much every year anyway but LB and S are the core and brains of the defence.

I do agree though that this team is likely going to be around 8-8 to 10-6 again. That’s arguably the best-case for those that want Reid gone. Good enough maybe to get them in the playoffs and maybe even win the NFC East if it is a down again next year but not grab a 1st round bye.

With the way Vick’s contract is structured though, I would give Reid one more year with this club to see if he can make it work. No deep playoff run (at least NFC Championship game); he gets canned with no exceptions.

by MG77 on Jan 2, 2012 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

Which is really not that bad when looking the team objectively in the summer. 10 wins was probably their high point.

But with the lockout and all the changes, this always was a two year project.

you know what, EB? You're right.

I concede that. Changes MUST be made. However, this is not a “pillage the village” kind of thing (although the entire linebacking corps needs to be completely overhauled). A change in defensive philosophy (see ya, Juan), a veteran presence @ safety, and a red-zone target would put us over the top. I also have to admit, I am sick of our offensive coordinator. I cant stand him. He makes me sick to my stomach. But as long as Reid is here, so is he. And that sucks.

- I don’t see the Eagles going better than 2-2 vs. AFC North next year

- Couple of NFC opponents the Eagles have played the last few years including the 49ers and Bears aren’t on the schedule; Falcons are though

- Guaranteed that Reid loses one of the Panthers/Bucs/Browns/Cards games where they are notable favorites (at least 7+ pt favorites) especially if it is before Nov.
